Eye opening conversation with my Dr yesterday...

I was there getting my heart checked...and asked him his thoughts on calorie intake for weight loss. He very simply said "it's not rocket science, you have to eat a less than you burn to lose weight!" BUT he also said most people starve themselves into a quick loss and then gain it back. He suggested setting a goal of 10% loss in the first year and go from there. For instance if you weigh 150 your 10% loss would be 15 pounds which is a little more than 1 pound a month. When he broke it down like that it seemed so attainable and maintainable!! I know a year seems like such a long time but really when you look back a year, how fast did that year go? I want to lose it for good this time not quickly knowing I will have to do it AGAIN!

That sounds like a very realistic and healthy goal to go by....Gets me thinking now...

It is certainly realistic, but I really don't think it's entirely necessary to lose weight THAT slowly.

I agree with this too he was just using the 10% as an example and if course if you have more than 15 pounds to lose you will lose quite a bit more and more quickly then those that don't have as much to lose.

I think a better way of thinking about it is....don't be upset if you don't lose more than say 15 lbs a year. Some people can lose 15 lbs in 2-3 months and others it might take a whole year to lose it. I know at the rate I'm going it would take me a full year to lose 15 lbs. I still want to have beers or a burger when I go out to a bar. Its all about finding that balance that is right for you.

sounds like you have a wonderful doctor! when i approached my doctor about losing weight he told me to "join weight watchers and do some cardio" without asking me any questions or giving any advice on HOW to lose the weight. your doc is a keeper!

I don't believe the dr meant a BF% loss, he meant a weight/scale loss. Aim to lose 10% of the WEIGHT you carry now. BF% is slightly different than weight loss.

And I too agree that that Dr. is a keeper!!!

People gain weight back not because of the speed of the weight loss, but because the strategies used to achieve rapid weight loss don't lend themselves to long term maintenece.

I got similar advice, though phrased a bit differently- my doc told me that with "real weight loss" I should only expect to lose 1 pound a MONTH. Of course she didn't elaborate on HOW, but looking back on it I see that she was encouraging slow n steady... Of coure at the time I was like wtf!?? Haha
