I was on the full website today for Garmin and synced to my MFP manually, and for the first time it sycned my calories perfectly! Hope it stays that way lol Speaking of which, if you're having trouble with the apps maybe you can try the full site? Under the calories in/out section

I use the vivosmart, it estimates calories burned throughout the day, and you can use a chest strap HRM for workouts for more accuracy. Vivofit is a less expensive option and is also good!
