I found out today that my former boss died from a massive heart attack. He had been massively overweight until getting gastric bypass about 2 or 3 years ago. He was 57, left behind a wife and kids. I bet she wishes she’d been harder on him about his weight much earlier. There’s a reason they call it MORBIDLY obese

Everything here is the exact reason I enjoy Crossfit so much. Also, it’s just a really freakin efficient and effective form of exercise

just found out that my former boss was killed by a heart attack last week. He'd just lost like 200 pounds a couple years ago after having gastric bypass.

There is a form of competitive SCUBA called Sport Diving, and of course there's free diving. I guess if you're diving for the purpose of being more competitive in sport diving, then all of your diving is sport. But I don't think recreational scuba diving fits any description of sport, no matter how loose, I've seen here.…

I would love to see a definition of sport, by a single authoritative body, that includes some of the bonkers qualifications as have been proposed here.
-
that last part is interesting. I feel like it's specifically included in order to differentiate from occupational competitions for physical professions, like are held for firefighters, soldiers, police officers, etc.
-
this is absurd. on any given day I'm far more likely to need to lift/pull/carry something heavy, or otherwise exert myself physically, than need to engage in fisticuffs. From a risk management perspective, over the course of my life I'm also far more likely to find myself in a situation where my physical strength and…

says the gentleman protesting people challenging his limited definition of "sport." that sword cuts both ways
-
way to set the "dumbest post of the day" bar so high this early in the day.
-
my physical therapist refers to me as an "athlete" which is pretty fun for my ego

this seems relevant here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MUKJTbOD-pc&t=0s

second recommendation for ClassPass. I use it when I travel for work.
-
yep. Also, according to the aforementioned archaic definition of "sport" as basically practice for warfare or combat, I don't think you can get much more "sport" than equestrian sports, aka cavalry practice.
-
I think part of it is that we've just become so accustomed to seeing obesity around us, and seeing obese people that don't appear to be struggling with health issues, that it normalizes it with us. Modern medicine and technology have made all but the most severe obesity manageable conditions, and not even inconvenient in…

gymnastics actually better meets the archaic definition of "sport" than most of the others, since it originally comes from agility conditioning for ancient armies. Specifically, as training for Greek, Athenian, and Spartan warriors.
-
what do you have against calluses? you a hand model?
-
I lift things up and put them down
-
that seems like an awfully archaic definition of "sport."

I would like to have a good, basic crossfit setup at home. rack, barbell and bumpers, rower, assault bike, pullup bar, etc. I usually workout at the gym in my apartment complex, but they don't have bumpers. I've been playing with the idea of buying my own set of 45 bumper plates to take in. I don't think anybody would take…
-
I just filled my disgusting fat face with a bunch of general tsos chicken. No ragrets.
-
I'd love to lift at home, but I don't have the many several grand I would need to build a home gym I wanted

Yep. Despise starting my career late because I spent time in the military first, I’m a level above most people at my firm my age, who’ve been there 2 or 3 years longer. I promoted 3 times in the 5 years I’ve been at my firm. I’m also much younger than everybody above me, and should promote to their level in the next year.

I miss fire department training, it was almost all variations of typical strong man stuff. step 1: grab heavy thing step 2: take heavy thing over there step 3: bring heavy thing back step 4: repeat also, smashing things with big iron hammers. Love that. We had one of these in our gym at the station.
-
I worked with a huge guy in the fire department a few years ago who once told us, when asked how he got so big, "find something heavy. pick it up. repeat." sage wisdom.
-
that's awesome
-
I love that Planet Fitness accidentally created the greatest workout motto since Just Do It, while trying to make fun of it.
-
I pick things up and put them down
-
I have to walk out my front door to go to the gym
-
yeah, exercise is just something done purposefully with the intention of improving one's self physically.
