  • Have you tried a TDEE calculator? Total Daily Energy Expenditure (whee, a thing I learned on MFP!) If you calculate yours and then 1400 is under it (which it most likely will be), then you are in "caloric deficit" and maintaining that deficit (via tracking CICO, or Calories In vs Calories Out) is how one loses weight over…
  • OP, I (like a poster on page 1) quit hitting the "complete this entry" button. I know people here will call it a weak excuse (or whatever "truth" they are "bluntly" writing), but even algorithmically programmed feedback is feedback to me. At the beginning, I was logging my exercise and MFP overstates calories burned like…
  • Man, RMO's are -delicious-! WAAY better than liver. I don't get the RMO hatin'. If braunschweiger was the most nutrient dense food in the world, I would still not eat it. And thus far, I cannot make myself eat kale even though everyone and their dog recommends it.
  • Well, I am referring to the in-house brand only in the OP, the actual line of "GNC" labeled protein shake stuff. I see people recommend ON in many threads as well as MTS, and I wondered if the GNC line is considered drastically inferior or if there were other factors in play. I can absolutely appreciate not wanting to…
  • Thanks for the input, everyone! I use GNC because it was the first thing recommended to us, so I wanted to get some glimpses as to why nobody ever mentions it. I haven't researched enough to know what makes one shake better or more preferable to another. I read something about "fillers" the other day, but did not find…
  • I use GNC Pro Performance 100% whey protein. It has 24 g protein for 150 calories, along with 3 g sugars (cane & stevia listed) & 8 g carbs. I find the flavors delicious. It is probably not as much bang for your buck calorie:macro ratio as many previously mentioned, and because it is GNC, it is pricey. But man, it is JUST…
  • A thing I think is awesome in this thread is seeing people admitting that their headphones are used to help stay focused. I do not use headphones at the gym (just one more thing to mess with, my brain is already full there), but almost everyone else does. It makes me wonder how many of them are afraid of being judged and…
  • I feel you. I was 5'4", 197#, and pushing 40 when I walked into Gold's Gym amongst the MuscleBros. They did not give 2 rat's hind legs, except that after a couple months & 15 lbs down, a couple of them said how great I was doing. I was surprised, and pretty pleased. Chicks who lift are just the tops, so go for it. Nobody…
  • YES! This helps tremendously (doesn't kill the pain, but -does- help, roll it under the arch). For me, better shoes & arch support, weight loss, & stretching several times a day helped too. Stretching with a towel before ever getting out of bed helped, as did heels-off-a-step stretches. It will get better, but the agony…
  • Man, i <3 this thread! There is SUCH great advice here! I am checking it drunk, & still am glad I bookmarked it! Great advice from many posters. . Try calculating your TDEE too, try http://www.fitnessfrog.com/calculators/tdee-calculator.htm for one people recommend. Cals in < cals out (CICO), embrace it, it's the MFP way!…
  • I find that the more I focus on eating protein, the less I have hunger pangs & cravings. When I get into the carby stuff like pasta or cookies (processed carby stuff), I tend to crave/hunger much sooner. I don't eat enough veg to know how those carbs affect me on the full/crave scale, so I can't say if there is a…
  • I prefer the gym. Because we are paying for it, I feel "obligated" to go. ;) BUT I also like being somewhere that everyone is there to work out. The atmosphere is good for me. I did set up our bonus room so I can do yoga videos because I can only make one class a week, but I slack on actually doing it at home.
  • Sooo. Much. Pizza. Today. :^/ Over calories today, no gym today, and haven't given a fig to work on hitting macros for a week. AND it is Girl Scout Cookie season!! Weight loss isn't linear, or so I hear.
  • I didn't let people snake my food before, I sure am not gonna let them do it now. Hubby got the hint, but he yoinks things every so often just to get a rise out of me. Then I snarl and b##### at him, and he doesn't do it again for a while. I always make sure to take out a portion of shrimp or tuna for the cats before I…
  • Mine is 1400 & open, though, I wouldn't take my advice if I were you. ;)
  • I have it in my coffee for breakfast every day to supplement protein macro w/o cholesterol fm eggs (probably a broscience belief, but whatevs) and it helps me stay feeling full where carby stuff like oatmeal or cereal doesn't.
  • Apparently, this calculator is a good place to start: http://www.fitnessfrog.com/calculators/tdee-calculator.html and then use MFP settings/tools to set caloric deficit goals. (I say "apparently" as I have not used that TDEE calculator personally, but I see it referenced here a lot. If I DID want to know my TDEE, I would…

  • I have cut out full-cal soda (read: excess cals). My dental work was already excessive, so cutting acidic sugar water out was beneficial on many levels. In general, though, just excess calories. I -added- a focus on eating more nutrient-dense foods, actual exercise, and a growing understanding (and utilization) of macros.
  • When I started a job with a lot of walking, the PF hit hard and fast, and it was crippling. See a doc or podiatrist asap, get inserts. Stretches that stretch the arch helped me a lot: heels off a stairstep for calf/arches, having a towel at bedside to put under the ball of my foot and pull back before ever putting my feet…
  • YouTube's Yoga with Adriene has lots of varied episodes and only minor woo. Quiet but challenging workouts, perky yogi.
  • Just because you are not "building" muscles doesn't mean you can't use & strengthen & maintain what you have within reason. If a better gym affords you better infrastructure -that you will utilize-, then I would say go for it. We chose a higher-infrastructure gym just to give ourselves more options for activity during…
  • Today instead of skipping the gym, we went! Wanted to skip badly, too, but encouraged each other and got in our workouts.
  • I got a few training sessions with a creative trainer. I now have a list of so many exercises & advancement/variations that I have to REALLY plan workouts just to incorporate all the different stuff I could do even once or twice a week. Yoga I also love because it is harder to stay in one position for 30 seconds than it…
  • My trainer is a guy whose body doesn't particularly "stand out." Even at Gold's Gym, MuscleBro central, he is one of the most knowledgeable, personable trainers on our local staff (and they are all quite good). I have watched his sessions with very fit 20something females, group boot camps (mixed gender 30 & 40s, usually),…
  • She needs a life. I see the groan & grunt crowd often, as I work out late in the evening. They rock...and generally clean up after themselves. It's a -gym-. So sorry if the sounds of work are drowning out Megan Trainor. Oh wait, I'm not sorry.
  • I have seen a few threads like this, and I have seen the following trend in answers: out walking etc, you are WAY more likely to get appalling comments / verbal assault from passersby than you will ever hear in a gym. I think this is because people in gyms -all- know it is WORK. Gym-goers seem to respect other people who…
  • I remember my mom & grandma being obsessed with grapefruit in the late 70s. Grapefruit dieting was apparently a thing at the time.
  • Lifting the "dead" medicine ball overhead and hurling it to the ground for 3 sets makes me feel ridicuous every time. Love my trainer, but that exercise makes me feel foolish.
  • Grateful for sooo much! Hubby, kids, cats, family, crazy friends, a job, a home, a car, hot running water. Accomplishment of the day: putting in for refunds @ work.
  • Sundays suck for me too. I am not crafty like Astro-Katie (such cute jars!! Love them!), but I have learned to put projects into my weekend. Heaven knows I always have an "on deck to do" list. Since starting weight loss, I finished painting my son's room, reclaimed my bonus room, and put up some metal shelving in the…
