It's just a 5k, my plan is to run outside to get ready for it. I've lost 80 lbs this year and exercise plenty just not outside much. I guess my goal is to finish... If I'm in the bottom half of my age group even better...

As far as advice for the gym, just start doing something. Walk, get on a bike, elliptical, do some circuit training or look up a good beginner lifting routine like lift like a girl or stronglifts 5x5.

I would start by just focusing on calories (get a good kitchen scale and weigh your food). After you get calories under control add a macro to focus on. I would suggest protein (protein is a minimum going over is OK, maybe even encouraged if you are working out). After doing that for a while I would focus on fat. Then just…

I started at 315 and use the elliptical, if you can move fast up the resistance to get you working. Also weight training is key. Look for a beginner weight lifting routine that works for you. I'm about 250 now and have started to do the couch to 5k program.

Thanks for the input everyone. I'm not necessarily low carb, I just tend to eat low carb because I find it more satisfying. I'm guilty of not eating enough fruit but I get plenty of vegetables. Chia might be a great option for me. Thanks again!

I know this question is asked alot so I paid attention to when people started asking if I was losing weight or telling me that I was doing a good job. I only counted it if the person did not know I was trying. The 3rd person said something at 14% bodyweight lost.
