  • The trick is logging your food and counting your calories. It's that easy! I'm also mostly plant based, but I've weighed anywhere from 124 to 170 on a plant-based diet. It's all about the calories.
  • You might tell a bit about yourself to find friends. Welcome!

  • Sounds like you're off to a great start already! This site can be so helpful. Sending you a friend request in case you feel the social aspect of the site can help keep you motivated. I'm 60.

  • The emotional/social help on here made all the difference to me when I was spinning my wheels trying to get some weight off. Sending you a friend request.

  • Logging on here may help. I think most of us have similar struggles. You can do it!

  • I gave up meat in 1991 at the age of 29 (31 years ago), I did it suddenly the day I made up my mind to do it, and I did it to avoid harming other living creatures, not for health. In those days, the internet wasn't much help, so I went to the public library, brought armloads of vegetarian cookbooks and nutrition guides…
  • Well, I lost about 30 lbs in my 50's. It went pretty quick, really, maybe 3 to 3 1/2 months? I was eating net 1200-1400 a day and seldom felt hungry at the higher end of that range. I'm 60 now and my weight has been creeping back up during "maintenance" and Covid, so I just took off 10 again. I'd like to see if I can go a…
  • You have great motivation! Welcome!

  • This is a good place to do all that--Welcome!
  • Eating healthy and working out help so many things! This is a great place to do it.
  • I think there are a lot of us here who plan on using those training wheels indefinitely. I've been here for over 6 years so far. In middle age, I seemed to be able to eat intuitively. After age 50, I lost that ability--No idea why, but it is what it is. I lost weight here and I stay here to keep it off. Along the way, I…
  • Eric, many folks here have found themselves in a similar situation, and using MFP can really help. If you set up to log your food at a do-able level, get what exercise you're able (or even just diet at first, if you can't), make a small group of supportive, engaged friends to share the ups and downs with, you might just be…
  • Sent you a FR. I eat plant based.

  • You've got some great motivation, there. Make some friends, log your food, get out for some walks, and watch yourself succeed!
  • Amioc, how have you approached dieting most recently? How many calories a day, for example, what kind of foods did you try cutting out, etc? Losing and keeping weight off means a permanent change in how you plan to eat forever--So it makes sense to find a pattern that you don't find overwhelmingly difficult--Don't aim to…
  • I mean, we're all in the same boat! You may feel most comfortable finding a small group of friends to share with rather than posting to the community at large. So many different ways to proceed--but sharing helps many of us.
  • Welcome!

  • Never too late. I suspect exercise will be easier when you've lost some weight, and you can do that just by careful logging here on MFP. Not sure what Bistro MD is, but if you pick a reasonable calorie goal on here--Don't try to go for a "crash diet" effect and starve yourself, you will be less likely to binge and will…
  • You don't mention if you're exercising, but you may be able to squeeze in another 300 or so calories if you just go out and walk for an hour or so a day. I don't know if that would help or not, but I agree that raising calories, in as controlled a way as possible, when you start to feel binge-y is probably the smartest…

  • To add a friend, just click on their picture, then click on their user name, and you will be on their profile page, where you will see a green "button" that says, "Add as Friend". Click that, and you can send them a message explaining why you want to be friends and send the request. I've mostly lost my weight--I've been…
  • So many of us who are older are succeeding on here! Your doctor is ill-informed, and I'd say his statement was counter-productive, except look what it did--It gave you the motivation you needed! Unfortunately, his words won't have that effect on all or most of his patients. After my mother's massive heart attack at age 66,…
  • Agree with NovusDies--You look pretty in that photo and shouldn't feel ashamed of sharing it. I like your idea of eating *healthier* rather than *dieting*. I've cut out added sugars and still sometimes struggle not to overeat even the healthy stuff, though, so I'd say part of eating healthier can be knowing when enough is…
  • Lots of problems this last month or so
  • You can totally do this! The weight loss culture sounds a bit stressful there, but your plan to cook more is a good one, and MFP is an amazing tool. You don't have much weight to lose. I was surprised at how quickly I got down to my goal weight (staying there has been the problem, but my friends keep me here, logging, and…
  • I can't wait to see your success on here! You're going to do great. Set your goals, get some friends, log daily, and watch the transformation! I didn't have all that much weight to lose, but it piled on right at menopause for me too, and this is where I came to get rid of it. Some of my friends on here have achieved…
  • PS: Cooking is another hobby you might want to take up, with an emphasis on healthy stuff!
  • I think you'll be surprised at how quickly you can get that weight off here! I'm 60 and have been here about 6 years, but I have ups and downs. I don't use a fitness gadget of any kind, not even to count steps--You can just pick your exercise/walking pace and enter it yourself by time spent at activity, and it works great.…
  • Well, you've certainly come to the right place!
