  • In the end there's no right or wrong day for the week to start. Whatever works is perfectly fine way to use your calendar. In the end it doesn't matter what day you consider to be the first day of the week as long as you record that date as dd/mm/yy (small/larger/largest) which is correct way as opposed to the silly…
  • Hopefully this doesn't come across as facetious but I think the biggest change that's required is your expectations.
  • Weight is made up of more than just fat, this other stuff fluctuates which can mask fat loss. This graph shows how even if (F) fat loss is going down (W) water and (S) stuff like waste in your system can cause the scale to move up and down. When you're weighing weekly you can sometimes get 'unlucky' and hit the high points…
  • Lose weight in the kitchen, get fit in the gym. All the exercise in the world and the best program won't make a bit of difference if you're eating more calories than you burn.
  • Really? MFP recommendation put your daily calorie deficit at 5250cal per day? Impressive. So impressive that I'm inclined to say that it's completely untrue. Or dare I say, Impossible. OP, MFP takes the details you provide and use them to calculate a good starting point for calorie consumption. From there, depending on how…
  • I think the problem is you're thinking in terms of some finish line that you're gong to reach in 6 months to 1 years time. Here's the secret though. There is no finish line, there's just from now onward. You need to be doing things that you can maintain forever. And by forever I mean REAL forever, as in for the rest of…
  • Fair enough. You have to do what you feel is right for you. For what it's worth thought, there's also nothing at all wrong with eating for pleasure. Food, eating, taste. It's all a sensory experience which can be enjoyed for the experience alone, rather than just to achieve nutrition and sustenance. If you're in the habit…
  • Between this post and the previous bench press post I'm finding it very difficult to not write the posts off as a weird trolling cry for attention.
  • I guess from one perspective my week starts on a Sunday. Since my final daily weigh in figure for the week, which then goes to calculate my weekly 'official MFP' weigh in number, is recorded in my spreadsheet on Sunday morning first thing, I guess all the calories I consume/burn from that point on, including those on that…
  • The problem, in my experience, with the 'all or nothing' approach is that 'all' is impossible and 'nothing' is very easy. So in reality it's 'impossible or nothing' which really just means 'nothing'... Now, I'm no stranger to this way of thinking. In fact I'd say 'all or nothing' is probably one of the biggest reason I…
  • I'll probably give it another try one day. Might go a bit better now that I'm over 100lbs lighter =). Maybe this time I'll enjoy the other positions as much as I enjoyed Corpse Pose =)
  • I once tried yoga cause I though it would be 'relaxing and meditative'. Not sure if I was doing it wrong but it was far closer to 'strenuous and stressful' in my books =)
  • At my heaviest I quickly noticed that working out was *really* counterproductive for me. I was too heavy to comfortably and effectively exercise so was killing myself 3 or 4 days a week and seeing no progress in my fitness. To make matters worse, I'd walk out of every exercise/gym/workout session absolutely ravenous and…
  • It's nonsense and serves no purpose. Closing your diary each day isn't required so I'd recommend not even bothering to do it =)
  • Being emotionally invested in the scale number. It was a huge step forward for me when I was able to divorce my emotions from the scale and begin to view my weigh ins in a more cold, clinical manner and see the numbers as just points of data, almost in a scientific sense. This turned getting on the scales and seeing a…
  • Out of curiosity what makes you think that after dinner snacking is a bad habit? What do you see as the downside or negative consequence of consuming a part of your daily calorie target later in the day?
  • I don't have a cheat meal ever. That's not to say that I never indulge or treat myself, only that I refuse to classify enjoying my life occasional as 'cheating' like I'm doing something wrong or breaking some rule. Forget that self judging, moralising nonsense. So I stick to my calorie target the majority of the time and…
  • This is the very reason I created a recipe called 'Skipped Meal' which has 0 calories/nutrients. I did this by making the only ingredient in the recipe 10ml water. Then if I skip lunch, don't eat a snack that day or whatever I'll put a 'Skipped Meal' entry so that there are no blanks or missing entries in my record. This…
  • Yeah, RD not Nutritionist but to answer the question. Yeah, I'd definitely see an RD who was overweight. I'm going to them for their knowledge and the shape of their body, their eating habits, they lifestyle, etc doesn't change the education they've received. Now that I think about it I'd probably be more likely to see an…
  • Meh, Having snacks while watching a movie is part of the overall experience and enjoyment for me so I just chalk it up as a special occasion and don't stress about it. I probably only go to the cinema once a month or so. That's hardly often enough that the additional calories from snacks even matter in the grand scheme of…
  • Did they ban this guy already?
  • The only thing I've ever read about that showed results in studies and has a genuine biological basis for working is Orlistat (Xenical). It works by inhibiting pancreatic and stomach lipases (the enzymes that break down fats), so ingested fats (and the resulting calories) can't be broken down and absorbed. But this is 100%…
  • I like to challenge myself by deliberately doing things that I know will make me feel self conscious, uncomfortable, uneasy and a bit scared. This usually seems to take the form of overcoming social situations or areas that I think I have room to grow and develop but sometimes it's about learning something new that I'm not…
  • Is lifting in the gym beneficial to being fit and healthy? No doubt it is Is lifting in the gym necessary to be fit and healthy? Not by a long shot. There are loads of people who love hitting the gym and lifting and there are others who while it's not there thing they like the benefits enough that they can make themselves…
  • Welcome back. Weight management I've found involves a bit of trial and error so when returning I think it's really important to ask yourself a couple of questions so you can learn from your experience and give yourself the best possible chance this time round. 1. What worked last time? What approach did you find really…
  • There's no need to 'get your metabolism going' in the morning. It's been going all night and is going just fine when you wake up. I mean 5-10 mins cardio in the morning isn't going to do any harm but it's almost certainly not going to have some dramatic effect beyond adding a few dozen calories to the CO column and maybe…
  • OK. I get it now. This isn't a real person. It's a spambot. Disregard all posts by this account
  • If your late night snacking isn't taking you over your calories for the day by a significant amount then there's really no reason it should be a problem, at least weight loss wise. If it is making your blow out your calorie target by enough calories to negatively impact your results then you probably have two options. 1.…
  • Yep, same here. I always weigh heaviest on a Monday. I start each week in the red (Mondays weight is higher than the previous weeks average weight) and as the week goes on and the daily weigh ins start going down the gap closes and usually (hopefully) dips below the previous weeks average.
