Thankyou I have started doing exactly that as I didn't feel challenged enough. Tonight the last few reps were a real struggle but I did them! Good to know I'm doing something right

Thanks everyone, I'm just doing a basic programme that the fitness instructor in the gym set for me. Then in 6 weeks I go back to him and he gives me something more challenging. He showed me form etc, and there are always instructors around the gym to ask. I may try a little more weight today, some of the exercises don't…

Thanks all, am a member of a David Lloyd gym in the uk. May give it a go slowly at first!

Interval training is great for increasing your speed - run at your 'comfortable' speed and then every 5 minutes or so do a minute or 90 seconds as fast as you can, then go back to comfortable speed and repeat. I'm reducing my 5k time this way.

It's because they're not mechanically propelled - your body does more work, I guess?
-
Spinning and swimming here - I find I can't run day after day as it's too much for my joints.
-
45 minute spin class....12 miles on the bike at varying speeds and gradients.
-
Thanks everyone....definitely need proper shoes, having just been running in generic trainers up til now.
-
Thanks...I do take rest days, only training 5 days a week currently. Not sure why spin would make it worse though? Doesn't hurt when I spin and impact is on upper legs rather than lower.

Started running back in July, couldn't run for more than 5 mins non stop before I started and pretty much like others I did it because I wanted to prove I could. Ran my first 10k race last weekend in and hour and 10 mins. Have just signed up for a trail 10k next March, plan to try and beat my previous speed by 5 mins if I…

I've obviously been misinformed - I'm 46 and during a 10k at the weekend my heart rate went as high as 170 - I thought this was high, for me.
-
Try the couch to 5k programme if you want to build up to running? I started with this 4 months ago and ran my first competitive 10K race at the weekend. Someone told me that your max heart rate should be 220 minus your age.

There are worse things to get addicted to!
-
Cool! It's a good one for a first race - lovely and flat. Going for the Harewood Dash next in March
-
Yep!
-
Well done that's fantastic! I did my 10k and am happy with my time of 69 mins 10 secs
-
Try Mapmyrun, it tells you your pace per km and you can speed up/slow down accordingly. I think you can set training programmes as well.
-
So how does this work? You basically just run in the middle of people? Weather forecast in Leeds has improved a little - less windy.
-
I'm doing my first 10k on Sunday and am also freaking out about the weather forecast

Spinning! Why has no one said this yet?! Great fun
-
Spin class is what got me back to fitness this year - I love it. It's great fun (don't get me wrong, it's hard work!) but if you get a good instructor they will give a range to suit all levels. Go for it - you won't regret it.

Awww thankyou! Sprint triathlon sounds a great idea!
-
Thanks...have done a mixture of treadmill and outside training. Think I'm just panicking a bit because it's my first one but you've been helpful - thankyou.
-
Just because I want to, but not for this one - for the next one I'm planning in March. Would be happy just to finish this one!
-
Thankyou to the last poster - that gives me confidence! I'm planning another 10k in March (if this one doesn't kill me!!) and was hoping to get my time down to an hour by then, but maybe that's a little optimistic?!
-
Thank you, really appreciate the advice
-
Will give it a go....2 weeks to build my speed up!
-
Thanks....so much to think about! I usually only run 3 times a week and mix it in with a couple of spin classes and maybe a swim. But right now I'm just panicking about doing the 10k in a couple of weeks so really feel like I should be running more.....
-
Thanks for the advice everyone. I think my favourite piece of advice is to push my speed up every time - gonna try that
-
Ok thanks all....didn't really want to stop as I lose momentum but might not have a choice! (My other half pointed out that I need to get my 10k under an hour - not helpful!!!)
