  • The adequate intake for sodium (that is, the minimum amount required for most healthy adults) is 1500 mg. You'll have serious problems if you stick to 100 mg/day.
  • There is no good reason why that medication should cause weight gain. It's very tempting to blame it rather than take responsibility for your decrease in activity and increase in food intake, I know, but seriously. You broke your ankle, obviously you're sitting around more, and if you haven't decreased food intake…
  • There's a bunch of self-help workbooks based on CBT that might help. I don't know of any that are specifically focused on body image concerns but I'm sure they exist. Ones I've seen are the "mindfulness and acceptance workbook for anxiety," "mind over mood," "the OCD workbook," etc. I'd head over to Amazon and have a look…
  • There's very little good scientific evidence to support any one artificial sweetener as being better or healthier than others. Pick one you can stand the taste of. I personally can't stand stevia - Splenda all day long for me.
  • Abilify is not just a sleeping pill, it's an antipsychotic. It's used for lots of things other than sleep, and if you're using it for one of those things, Benadryl isn't going to cut it. Talk to your doctor - Abilify and other antipsychotics have known metabolic side effects and many, many folks find themselves gaining…
  • And lots of fibre!
  • And don't freak out if you get home and get on the scale and your weight is all thrown off. Of course you know this, what with the whole kidney thing, but fluid balance can make your numbers go up and down and all over the place. It'll balance itself out in time.
  • Don't worry too much. Eat what you like when you can and try to drink some calories. Understand that at least part of the reason you're feeling like such crap is because you aren't eating anything - lack of food is making all of the feelings you're having way worse than they need to be. Try to get yourself together if you…
  • They just assume that 1 mL = 1 g, which is true when we're talking water.
  • If you are on medications that cause constipation (like opiates, for example?) you need to be on a regular bowel protocol or you risk getting so constipated that you obstruct. My patients (I'm a nurse) that are on opiates take sennosides 1-2 tabs in the evening before bed. If this isn't enough, they take more, and if that…
  • So... the title of the thread means "say YES to late night snacking." Which I was totally on board with, as a challenge, but I see now that is not the case and I'm a little disappointed.
  • You will probably gain some weight, maybe a few pounds, but it'll be nearly all fluid and glycogen.
  • I make a travel mug of coffee before I leave home in the morning and stick it in my backpack so that when I get to work (and am a bit grumbly about having to go to work at THIS hour in the morning, or having to go at all) I get to pull out this delicious and fresh mug of coffee and drink it while I get myself set up for…
  • I mean... when one person is unsupportive, okay, maybe that person wasn't really a friend to begin with. Maybe even two or three. But when MANY people you thought were your friends are complaining to you about this change you're making? Maybe it's worth having a look at yourself and your behaviour to make sure YOU aren't…
  • There is no reason why any kind of antibiotic should cause weight gain. If you're gaining weight, it's likely that you're eating more than your maintenance.
  • I'd be super curious to know what your blood work looks like. A thyroid panel, for sure, at least (TSH, free T3 and T4). A fasting glucose and an A1C, as well as a CBC with diff, and ferritin would be good too. Are you taking any medications at all? I don't have any real suggestions, to be honest, I'm just curious.
  • I don't know if your doctor also did a CBC but low ferritin could translate to low hemoglobin, and if your Hgb is low that could explain some of the symptoms you're having (fatigue? Breathlessness? That kind of thing?). Getting your iron up will likely give you more energy.
