  • Sugar is a tough one for everybody. natural sugars, fructose vs sucrose, semi processed sugars, fake sugar, etc, etc. Ultimately, IMO, reducing my OVERALL sugar inatke has helped me lose & maintain my weight. Thats just me but it has worked. My daily calorie goal for maintaining is about 3,000 cals. Of that, I set my total…
  • You can get Chipotle and keep fairly reasonable. If you are on an all-out calorie restricted diet then it gets really tough. If you are just maintaining or trying to hit certain macro levels then its easier to make it work. Im in the latter group so I usually go with a Salad Bowl with whatever meat, Beans(fiber & more…
  • I dont know if Id eliminate the concept of unhealthy food. You will use up calries and macros very quickly eating mostly junk. Plus, they will be empty calories so you'll be short on nutrition which isnt good for the long haul.
  • Its extremely hard to get a six pack or even a 3-4 pack in that area of your body. It requires very strict dedication in the kitchen AND the gym. You must have very low bodyfat % too. Everyone has "abs" but you cant see them on most of us. Stupid body, lol. Calorie deficits are of course required but thats just the start.
  • Mega dittos to the comments about weight training AND cardio being complimentary to each other. You need BOTH to have a truly good body & solid fitness. I also had the "gaunt looking, skinny-fat" problem after losing 100 lbs. Over the last 4-6 months Ive added back about 10-12 lbs and have lean muscle showing now so I look…
  • Yeah - unless there is a medical condition requesting you do this...please stop. Thats not nearly enough carbs.

  • I am a certified Nut Butter Murderer. Cant stop eating the stuff. I eat only natural butters as in the only ingredient is the nuts thelselves. Almond, Cashew, & peanut are my "gotos" but Sunflower seed butter is also a nice change of pace. I say go for it - they all have their own interesting flavor profile and make you…
  • Even though it isnt supposed to matter - I still say that eating most of your sugar through fruits & veggies ends up being different than just sucking down tablespoon after tablespoon of table sugar. I know the "science" doesnt back that feeling.... but Im sticking with it. :)
  • This is true - but adding lean muscle mass and "recomping" your body also helps. Sadly, the belly area appears to be the last place to lose fat on our bodies. :(

  • Dropping carbs to super low amounts doesnt produce visible abs. EVERYONE has a six pack but you dont see it on most of us due to body fat % being too high. Thats all it is. Calorie deficits and low body fat are the key to abs. Lean mass through weight lifting is another big contributor. Thats it. For those of us like me…
  • It is hard. Im allergic to bananas too which hurst me even more. Sweet potatoes have a bunch and so do some other veggies. I agree that its tough though.
  • Sautee in olive oil or bake in oven with some spices. The leftovers are for next days lunch salad. So many ways to cook chicken. You never run out. You can even dio a French or Scampi here and there hich are higher cal but oh so tasty :)

  • I agree - but you should also determine how you "feel" and how your clothes fit. Ive been sloooowly adding muscle while keeping fat gains to a minimum(hopefully) by going slightly over maintainance calories. Every so often, throw on a pair of jeans or whatever that you are familiar with and feel how they fit. Do they seem…
  • After weight training your body needs carbs and protein to start the recovery process. And, this whole "limit carbs" thing these days is getting old and tiresome. Active people NEED carbs and a good amount of them to stay healthy & fit. Ive recently switched to a higher carb macro breakdown and I feel better. My workouts…
  • Hmmm - to build muscle you need a decent amount of carbs as well as protein. Too much protein tends to be wasted as far as Ive read. Of course, the internet is loaded with studies that refute other studies that then refute other studies, blah, blah. :( Active people NEED carbs and usually need more than prescribed by the…

  • We try and eat fish 1-2 times a week. I wish it was cheaper....
  • If you are already fit and in good shape then it is a little much. My doctor even told me to "back off" a bit some months ago and said I didnt need as much cardio. Ive been concentrating on strength training more and my body comp is better and Ive added some lean mass too. I also try to incorporate 2 rest days now versus…
  • If you mean 100 grams of carbs total for the entire day then Id argue thats too low and could backfire on you. I'd suggest trying to stay in the 150 grams to 200 grams per day at a minimum to properly fuel your body and keep things in balance. These crazy diets that slant way too far in one direction just dont cut it, IMO.…
  • Protein pancake recipes come in handy. Oatmeal with eggs or egg whites work good too.
  • 40% of cals for protein is kind of high and might be hard to hit for most people. Id add more good fats to the percentage and maybe say: 40% carb, 30% fat, 30% protein. Limit sugar intake too ;)

  • No reason to "fear the beer". Of course, slamming a six pack 4-6 times a week is too many cals but 1-2 beers a night for an active, healthy person is 100% fine and wont cause any harm. As others have said, dont drink low-cal cheap crap. Drink GOOD beer since thats the way it was meant to be.

  • I was gonna say - unless you are trying to go all "Keto" then carb intake should be around 40% or so for an active individual that eats a fairly balanced diet. I personally try and eat around 150g to 200g of carbs per day and fill in the rest with fat and protein. Some days I go over and some under but thats a good spot…
  • So we grabbed a small jar of ulsulphered molasses this weekend and tried it out on some cakes. NOT my thing. The sweetness is good but the initial flavor of the molasses is wicked strong and just isnt gonna work. Might be OK mixed into the batter or on some other foods but its pretty awful on pancakes. Ive decided to…
  • Agreed - and they dont use sucralose or any other nasty sweeteners either. Always felt this product mixed well and didnt "overdo" the flavor either. IMO.
  • Great advice and replies, folks. The home made recipe looks interesting too. I reckon since I behave most of the time and do maintain my fitness that I deserve to monge down some real maple syrup with my cakes. For the heckuva it today we did buy a small jar of Grandmas molasses which is actually decent tasting. I will try…
  • Fantastic. Must feel great to see the results of your hard work and dedication. It's NOT easy but seeing results keeps you motivated to stay on track. You go girl!!!
  • Ehhh - not sure about that. Its bleached. Heavily processed & a chemical as far as Im concerned. Does effect quite a few people in a negative way. Whats wrong with moderate amonts of natural sweeteners like real maple syrup, cane sugar syrup, stuff like that?
  • It is such a maze out there when it comes to diet and fitness info. No wonder people struggle so badly with this. Oh my freeging God..... lol Its like half the studies out there refute and claim to disprove the other half of the studies. Grains are bad, grains are good. Fat is bad, fat is good. Carbs are bad, carbs are…
  • As most people here have correctly stated - A reasonable, moderate diet of all macronutrients is not only best for you but its also sustainable which is a HUGE part of keeping your fitness level and weight goals in-tact. Im sorry but Keto, Paleo, Atkins, North beach, Sout Beach, west peninsula, blah, blah diets are all so…
  • Nuts are simply expensive and it sucks but thats the way it is. :( Just keep hunting down various online sources. I did find some cashews once that were cheaper but they were NOT that good and seemed old/stale. Bleh! Its like nuts are about the same price as a good cut of beef loin or whatever. Damnit all!
