  • After doing long, hard hikes and backpacking trips I use to wake up with restless leg type of feelings. After researching I discovered that depleting magnesium by exercising hard could cause this. I now take magnesium citrate before and after hard exercise and no longer experience the discomfort in my legs. If you take too…
  • Thanks, that's good to know.
  • If I had previously had a heart attack or if I had heart disease I would take a statin, I think the science supports the benefits. However, the science is too muddy otherwise and statins can have side effects. This is one of many interesting articles that questions the effectiveness of statins in people whose only risk…
  • Like CharlieBeans said, there is a test the doctor can order. I knew my doctor didn't know what size particles I had so the last time she was pushing statins on me I asked her about my particle size. Her face got a bit red as she looked through my chart before admitting she didn't know. So, she ordered the test but she…
  • I typically use chick peas and also regular frozen green peas.
  • I bought a packet of Vega Sport chocolate and liked it so I bought a big container from Amazon. I put a scoop of Vega Sport with a cup of almond milk and 2 tbls of Trader Joe's roasted cocoa nibs, 2 tbls of coffee and ice in the Vita mix. I have been really liking it, especially for the 30 grams of protein. I'm vegan so I…
  • I have high LDL, but everything else looks good. My doctor tried for years to put me on a statin but I refused. When I pointed out my ratios were good, my family history didn't point to heart disease and my LDLs were of the large, less damaging type, my doctor said she had to suggest statins in case I developed heart…
  • I keep reading that dietary cholesterol doesn't impact the level of cholesterol in the blood. However, I was pescaterian and ate wild caught salmon and eggs. I had a fasting blood test for cholesterol. I then went vegan and 8 weeks later had my cholesterol tested again and my LDL dropped 22%. My exercise and weight and…
  • Yes, I live a 1/2 hour drive to the Columbia River Gorge. Since it is a gorge, most of the hikes are hard and it makes for great conditioning hikes - plus there are a lot of waterfalls. In the Summer and Fall I do a lot of backpacking in Oregon and Washington. When it gets too rainy and cold for backpacking I mushroom…
  • 75/324 = 21.5% I don't know anything about the app, but that seems pretty inaccurate to me.
  • What are you putting in the protein shakes?
  • The pain is a good thing, it means you are building muscle. I agree with stretching, magnesium (Epsom salt), good food and rest. Your body needs time to heal.
  • If I am doing a really long, hard hike I will take an almond butter and honey or jelly sandwich. I noticed overseas they tend to eat "salad sandwiches" which is bread and condiments with salad ingredients.
  • I went vegetarian in 1976 for six years then added seafood and kept that diet until a few years ago when I went vegan, then I added eggs and salmon, now I'm back to straight vegan. I eat a pretty clean diet, though I do eat boca burgers and tofu hotdogs (processed food) - especially in the summer. I always think about the…
  • I agree on finding a class, Jennifer. The people who teach and take yoga are typically very supportive and it's a great way to meet people and feel connected while doing something that is really good for your body. Best of luck to you!

  • I've read all the posts in this thread and find it very interesting. I eat a mostly plant based, whole food diet so most of my food is vegetables and fruit. When I first went vegetarian in 1976 I didn't like too many vegetables. Over the years I've learned to love them. I am only 5'3" with a petite bone structure, my…
  • I get twitchy legs if I do a lot of exercising, especially hiking and backpacking. I finally figured out that taking a magnesium supplement took care of the problem. Don't take too much though, it will have a laxative effect.
