  • I use MapMyWalk and it will tell me my pace. You can also sync it to MFP.
  • I lost 25-30 pounds, almost to my goal weight with walking as my only exercise. I only added some weight training near the end. I still do mostly walking. It works just fine - and I'm not even doing massive amounts. About 2 miles a day at about 15-17 minutes/mile.
  • I do almost all the cooking and grocery shopping for us (me, DH, 16 yo son, and over the summer 19 yo son). The teens don't really need to diet, though the 19 yo has noticed that he put on a little weight his freshman year at college, so he is at least being more aware of what he eats. DH could stand to lose some weight,…
  • I did 2 miles (technically 2.09 miles) this morning with Map my Walk and it gave me a calorie burn of 218. That was "brisk" 3.5 mph pace and I'm 140 lb female.
  • Rework your calories to give yourself more for the afternoon snack? Try planning out what you will have so that it fits. It's a hard time! I find unless I'm super busy, I'm get really munchy then, but once I have sweets, I just want more. Fruit seems to be ok, but I do best with something with some protein (and maybe a…
  • Yes, I've seen some of those offers. I'm going to at least see how my numbers are at the health fair before I look into a meter. I'm really not wild about poking myself lots.
  • I got a pre-diabetic diagnosis last year at my physical. Tried to make a few changes, but nothing major and saw my a1c go up (5.9 to 6.0) this year. I started getting serious about dealing with it. I lost about 25 pounds (putting me at mid range BMI) and started walking 20-30 minutes most days. Tried to keep the carbs in…
  • Thanks to all. I'll use a standard low sodium fat free entry when I build my soup recipe. I'm glad to see others make their own broth - I tend to get strange looks if I mention it. But it's easy and so much tastier.
  • I hit goal right about the time I had a Drs appointment. My Dr said I was at a good weight and didn't need to lose anymore or log further. I told her I would continue to log at least for a while because otherwise I was likely to continue to lose. And in fact, even with logging I have lost another 2 pounds in 3ish weeks.…
  • You could try logging the fruits but not the vegetables. Most of the vegetables are low calorie enough to not matter that much, but really you don't have to log every vegetable in a salad. A generic salad entry will be close enough. I was using a generic one I found and wondered if it was really accurate. So one day I…
  • One thing I do sometimes when eating out is to remember that the portion sizes are often huge. So I will sometimes order one or two appetizers and no main dish. Or appetizer and soup or salad. Depends on what looks best. Especially if you don't have a way to save/reheat leftovers, I'm likely to eat too much rather than…
  • I changed to maintenance and tried to make decent choices. Sometimes I ordered soup and an appetizer and no entree. Sometimes even appetizer and dessert. It depended on what looked best, how hungry I was and how active I'd been that day. Except for a couple of traveling days (plane and train), I walked a lot. I logged as…
  • I eat an egg most mornings and my cholesterol went down 50 points at my last physical. I was eating more eggs than in the past, so eggs didn't cause a problem for me. I attribute the drop in cholesterol to losing weight and walking (not to eating more eggs).

  • I'm glad to hear that walking is good for pre or diabetes. I' re been diagnosed with pre diabetes. I lowered my a1c from 6.0 to 5.7 in the last 3 months - losing weight (I had started losing before the 6.0 reading, but only about a month). I'm now solidly in the healthy range for my height. I have also been walking and/or…
  • Your Dr. Should be able to refer you to a diabetic nutritionist/dietitian (I think there is a difference between the two, but don't know what) who could give you more info. My mom was diagnosed about 10 years ago and was told to do 45 carbs per meal. This might change depending on your age, sex, weight - I don't know. She…
  • That is clearly a personal preference. My family all prefers brown rice. At one point one of my kids, who was rather a picky eater, likely mostly just kid foods, refused to eat white rice, declaring than brown was much better. He was probably 8-10 at the time. This was a problem when we went out for Chinese as he had…
  • If you like them raw, then eat them raw. My 19 yo son really only likes raw veggies (only cooked ones I can think of are corn on the cob and roasted potatoes), so that's what I serve him. Raw broccoli, green beans. He even eats uncooked frozen peas.
  • I do some of the same. Partly at least it's that *for me* I am feeling deprived of veggies after a week or more of eating out. Usually I haven't had as many veggies as I would like on vacation, so I welcome getting back to them at home - and only lightly steamed, not mushy or overcooked.
  • Sounds like you are taking mini breaks already, a day here and there at maintence. And that is perhaps what is keeping you from feeling like you need a bigger break. I would say if it's not boke, don't fix it. I took a maintenance break while I was on vacation for 3 weeks this summer. It was a lot of wild guessing at…
  • @KittensMaster, how long ago did you achieve the reversal of diabetes? And do you continue to do sub 80 carbs a day? Every day or do you have occasional days you go over on carbs? If your diary is open to friends, I would love to be able to see it to get some ideas. Thanks
  • My fridge has lots more leftover bits and condiments. Oh my lord I think the condiments are multiplying in there. I would love to have that much empty space in my fridge, but I'd probably just fill it up. Guess it's time to clean it out.
  • Thanks! I'll ask about reading materials. I hope I've learned enough from reading various threads here on MFP to know whether the Drs advice seems reasonable. I've wondered about things like beans which are high carb but also high fiber. How do they do for diabetics?
  • You can turn off the iPhone step calories. When I updated iOS my iPhone steps started posting calories gained here on MFP. so for a few days it was double counting iPhone steps and my MapMyWalk calories. I chose to un-sync MapMyWalk as it was giving me even more calories.
  • I don't log spices. I do tend to log mustard, lettuce and tomato on sandwiches, though I don't weigh them. For that matter, I don't weigh most veggies anymore. I have a pretty good idea how much broccoli or green beans or asparagus I've got on my plate and it's just not going to matter if I've got 17 calories or 20…
  • I have had 2 people plus my mom comment on my weight loss (about 20 lbs). Seemingly many more people will comment TO my mom about how good I look. (And I'm not so young that it would be odd for them to talk to me - I'm 49. We know many of the same people in the community through church especially.) I get that comments on…
  • Wow! I get discouraged sometimes when I see women who are taller than my 5'7" with goals or weights down into the 120's. I've just reached my goal of 140 and don't think I want to go any lower. Last time I weighed less than this I was in my 20s (I'm 49 now). I think what weight looks good on you is so different from one…
  • I tend to eat the leftovers not the next night but two nights later, just so it's not a total repeat. For years when our kids were small, DH and I would cook on Sat and Sun and then alternate those leftovers the rest of the week, with one day out or something really quick. If I can, I still cook for an intentional extra…
  • I don't really know how much I gain from various things, because mostly I've been losing at a relatively steady clip, so the gains and losses somewhat cancel out. I guess I'll just set a soft range of +/- 3 pounds for now and then watch for a few weeks at least so I can see how much I really do fluctuate.
  • I log my workouts so I have a record of them. I try not to eat the calories back because they seem awfully inflated. People say that MFP inflates workout numbers and my walks from MapMyWalk seem to give me even higher numbers. But I do want to know what I've been doing for historical data. And if I have a day I go over my…
  • I was able to use MapMyWalk while on vacation (with no cell service) if I turned it on and off while in wifi. Otherwise I just used my phone to count steps.
