  • Great idea - I'm in. I am a 64 year old female, living in Tokyo, Japan. I have been gluten free for almost 30 years, but recently some of my symptoms have returned. (joint pain, digestion problems, skin problems, etc) In March I read Terry Wahl's "The Wahls Protocol: A Radical New Way to Treat All Chronic Autoimmune…
  • Hmmmm.... I have been thinking that MFP has set my target daily calories too low. Their algorithm tells me I should be eating 1,200 calories a day. The only way I can do that is to work my butt off at the gym, and then eat those exercise calories in addition to the 1200. I'm within 1 Kg of my goal weight. I think I will up…
  • I agree with KombuchaCat. I have a long history of being a comfort eater. Stress, boredom, loneliness - any kind of emotion sends me to the pantry or fridge. I have found that eating strict paleo really really helps my moods. I still have stress (a mother-in-law) and loneliness (my 3 kids and 4 grandchildren live on the…
  • LOL. I really had to smile at this because that is how it began in our house too. I still make bagels and bread, and lots of noodles and rice dishes for my dear hubby of 40 years but I never, ever, eat them. At first he felt a little lonely about eating them by himself, but he has seen how much better I feel without them,…
  • Question: Do you do your own shopping and your own cooking? If you do, it shouldn't be too difficult - if not, and you are expecting your wife or family to shop and cook for your paleo lifestyle, I expect you might get a lot of grief. I cook for myself and make sure my family gets to eat what they want to eat, and all is…
  • This is the third time I have done low carb. The first time was many years ago when I did the old zero carb Atkin's diet. I was starving hungry all the time. Supposedly, we didn't need to count calories, so I didn't. What I really wanted was a nice piece of celery, but ate bacon instead. I kept it up for a month and gained…
  • I am entering week 9 of no grains and no dairy. I don't miss the grains at all, but I sure do miss the dairy. I am putting coconut milk in my small morning coffee, and it just isn't the same. I miss cheese and yogurt too. I do feel better though. No more joint pain. I know it is worth it, so am hoping I just eventually get…
  • Thanks for the link. I use coconut oil a lot, so I could add this as well. The bad breath problem seems to have mostly disappeared on its own, but I sometimes have it in the morning when I first wake up. I will try some oil pulling and see what effect it has.

  • Why do you need to be tested? For heaven's sake, just stop eating gluten. I have never been tested, but have been gluten free for 30 years. The first 10 years, I kept going on and off, and every time I ate anything with gluten, I would get sick. (The same symptoms you describe) That is proof enough for me. Recently, some…
  • It is super easy to make your own. Fry up some liver of your choice in butter or coconut oil, along with onions and sea salt. (and mushrooms if you like them). Don't overcook the liver. Put in food processor and whirl until nice and creamy. It will keep in the fridge for about a week, but I usually eat it all up in a day…
  • Oh, great! I have been experiencing this for the past couple of weeks. I was hoping it was just from my half cup of coffee after lunch. I really wanted to get out of bed at 2 am last night and go to the gym.
  • I have been doing Paleo for 8 weeks today. I have been gluten free for over 30 years, but now have gone totally grain free and dairy free as well. Lots of good things are happening. My joint pain is gone, my hair has stopped falling out, my nails are stronger and growing faster, and in 8 weeks I have lost 10 pounds. My…
  • The MSG and other chemicals in bullion are the reason I do the sea salt instead. Let us know if it makes a difference in how you feel.
  • Mine is just the first 2 letters of the names of my sweet kiddies. They all live on the opposite side of the globe from me now, so I do all sorts of things to keep them in mind and heart.
  • All of the suggestions above are dessert type things. (I know - you did ask for desserts). My mom used to make something with chopped cooked chicken, chicken broth, cucumbers, celery, a bit of tomato juice and some tabasco. Heat the chicken with the broth and add some gelatin (I don't remember the exact amount),cool it,…
  • Mostly I am adding natural sea salt that is harvested in the outer islands of Okinawa. It is naturally high in potassium and magnesium. (I live in Japan) I also sometimes add light salt which is half potassium. I can also get powdered magnesium here. It is sold as a treatment for constipation. My blood pressure has been…
  • I have trouble with this too, especially in the summer. My doctor tells me my red blood cells are too abundant, and my blood is thick, so I should drink more water, but when I do, it all just comes out in pee. My numbers don't change. Recently, due to the good input I have gotten here, I have been increasing my…
  • MFP was extreeemly slow for me yesterday. I could hardly track my food because the server would time out. I wasn't having that problem with other sites. It seems better today.
  • Oh, me too! I had homemade pâté on Japanese icicle radish slices for breakfast, and it was so yummy!
  • I feel so much better on Paleo. My joint pain is gone, my skin is better, my nails are no longer brittle and cracked. I have more energy. I love how this is making me feel. My husband doesn't do Paleo. He feels fine on his high carb diet. I bake bread for him and buy his favorite junk snacks for him, but am not even…

  • Oops - spelling error. I did mean casein, the protein in dairy. But I also cannot handle hot peppers.
  • I am not sure if this is true everywhere, but in many places, if you donate blood to a blood bank, hemoglobin and cholesterol checks are part of the procedure and are free. A low carb/high fat diet works really well for me as long as I make sure I get lots and lots of nutrient dense low carb veggies. I don't absorb…
  • Hi Gretchen. I am new to the group too - just joined. I have been gluten free for about 30 years, but recently have been having a lot of autoimmune symptoms. (joint pain, diarrhea, skin problems, fatigue, very messed up hormones) I have suspected for some time that I am also caspian sensitive, but have been unwilling to…
  • Ooops, that WAS a typo. I did mean 30 - 80 grams. My carbs usually run from 10 to 25% of my total calories. I know that isn't really extreme, but I am careful about the kind of fats I consume. In August, when I am in the US, I will get some ketosis test strips, or maybe even a finger prick meter if it isn't too expensive.

  • I understand the tonsil stones because I have experienced that too, but not this time. I was totally unaware of the cause, though. As of 5 weeks ago, when I changed my eating to paleo/primal, I quit dairy. I am celiac, so have been gluten free for over 30 years. I have done fine with that, until about a year ago when I…

  • Thanks for the feedback. I think it probably is ketosis. I have been keeping my carbs between 30 - 80% and fats above 50. I will try the tongue scraping and more water.

  • I am 64, 5' 1.5" and currently 133 pounds, down from 148, 5 weeks ago. I have been living in Tokyo, Japan for the past 40 years. My whole nuclear family is morbidly obese with type 2 diabetes. Japanese life style (no car - walk to train stations and grocery stores) has given me a way out so far, but I constantly struggle…
  • I am not new to My Fitness Pal, but am new to Paleo and to the forums. I would love some new friends too.
  • I am also following the Wahl's Protocol. I have just recently started, and am looking for friends and support.
