A group of runners with my wife's Fleet Feet NoBo group were flashed during that incident on the West Shore Trail - it is a more isolated area which is why my wife doesn't like to run there. Green lakes looks beautiful - I tried to run through there yesterday but ended up in the campground area instead of the lake - I'll…

It's awesome to be able to come here and read everyone's successes and challenges - very much makes one feel part of a group to know we all face similar experiences when we run - some days excellent, some days not... October: Oct 1: 3 miles - Fleet Feet PB Class - Speed Work Oct 2: 5.5 miles Oct 3: XT - 10 mile bike ride…

The thing I find most amazing about running is what you learn about yourself - last night I went out for an easy 5 miles but the wind by the lake was blowing directly at me the last 2.5 miles - I never quit and kept running despite the desire to stop - same as this past weekend's 10K - with all the hills on the course, I…

@7lenny7 a winter running guide would be awesome - this will be my first winter running as I prepare for my first half and I know I will need to do some outside road running - which can be challenging in Central New York - my main question is what type of shoe to run in - GTX/trail/older road shoe with screws in them...

Congrats to everyone that ran well today - some even set PR's I see - nice work everyone... :) @katharmonic nice work this morning - it was a cold but lovely morning to run in Syracuse ... I finished my first 10k this morning - the MS Monster Scramble 10K - 1:01:24 - as my first 10k, my main goal was to keep a consistent…

As others have mentioned, I get up early so I can get to work earlier (I've tried running early mornings but with no success :) ). Getting to work early allows me to get out early enough to run before my daughter's games or my wife gets home. Weekends I get up and run in the AM whenever possible...

@BeeerRunner @juliet3455 Thanks for your thoughts :) I need to try on the Brooks Cascadia 11. I did not like last year's Brooks shoes with the weave in the tops of the shoes - I found the Ghost 8 very uncomfortable but love my 9's so it may be worth looking at the Cascadia 11. I will probably stay away from the Salomon…

@juliet3455 @BeeerRunner What trail shoes do you run in? I have done a couple of demo trail runs with the local Fleet Feet to sample different shoes - we have run in the Altra Lone Peaks and Saucony peregrine 6's. I much preferred the Saucony Peregrines of those two - I have also seen the Salomon Speedcross 3's on sale…

I'm in the same boat - my first is the Indy Mini in May 2017 - I can't decide between Higdon, Hansens or the 80/20 training plans - I'm leaning 80/20 but I had success with Higdon's 10K plan, so I'm still torn. Whatever plan I choose will need to start in February, and here in Central NY, it will be cold and snowy (just…

In January, I started a Couch to 5k plan as a very overweight person with no past running experience - I ran 3 days a week on the treadmill during the winter months following the plan - once the weather got better I hit the road outside - 9 months later I am up to almost 7 miles - I have run four 5k's and I am doing my…

@BeeerRunner thanks for the tips - most helpful

I'm gonna do the same - read through the training plan chapter last night for a half - still haven't decided between 80/20, Higdon or Hansen...

All I would say is be careful with how much you eat back of the calories you burn - I'm not sure how you are determining that amount and how accurate it is - I use a wrist based heart monitor so I expect it to be a decent approximate - if my workout is below 500 I won't eat back anything, if higher I will eat back some of…

Thank you!!! :) Following what you suggested, I will probably start by bumping the 1850 up to 2300 (the 1850 was an approx 500 calorie deficit) and then on long run days add in a couple hundred calories - so daily between 2300 to 2500 calories and monitor my weight to see how we do from there... I have already started…

Thank you!!! :) It's been well worth it ... I started with food changes, added in P90 and the 21 Day Fix for exercise after I lost the first 30 lbs, and started running 3 times a week in January 2016 following a Couch to 5k plan - never imagined in 9 months, I would go from the couch to 7 miles - I have truly enjoyed it…

One of my goals for the next year is: - change nutrition profile - daily eating habits I used to lose 135lbs can no longer be used when running 20+ miles a week - need to change daily nutrition profile to support new amount of exercise I started in June 2015 at 315 lbs, and for the last 15 months I have changed my diet to…

Having just started running in January 2017, I have a long way to go so this will be a good sized list :) - train for my first Half - the Indy Mini in May 2017 - still debating between Higdon Half Marathon plan, Hanson Half Marathon plan or Fitzgerald 80/20 plan - add strength training this winter once Fall races are…
-
80/20 is a very good read - so was Racing Weight - both by Matt Fitzgerald I found myself just a little intimidated by the 10k plan in 80/20 and ended up using a Hal Higdon plan for the upcoming Fall races. With a better base under me, I may go back and revisit 80/20 for my half training for the Indy Mini in 2017...

@KatieJane83 Very jealous of where you ran - looked like an absolutely beautiful place to run...

Saving money by looking at last year's models makes good sense - as long as the models you look at are the right characteristics for your feet... I've bought 8 pairs of shoes this year and one of the best pairs I ended up with was a pair of last year's Mizuno Wave Rider 18's for around $60. Just make sure wherever you…

Sweet!! Vacation plans for Feb 2018 :)

Thank you all for the welcome... when I started the weight loss plan, I had no idea I would get hooked on running - I read a suggestion to help with the weight loss to sign up for a 5k and then do the training - which I did, and haven't looked back... Races in 2016: May: Race for the Cure 5k - 33:21 June: Paige's Butterfly…

I don't - I read somewhere it was a cool half to do and to be honest - running across the finish line at the Indy 500 sounded awesome - so a co-worker and I have decided to drive to Indy to run it - it will be my first half... might as well make it memorable :)

Hey all!! I just found this challenge group so here is my first post with my progress for September. I started running in January this year straight off the couch. Over the last 9 months I have run at least 3 times a week and lost almost 100 lbs. I have three 5k's and three 10k races scheduled for this fall and I am…

I use the Garmin Forerunner 235 for running/cycling - built in GPS and wrist based HR - I like it and it has served me quite well over the last 4 months. My wife uses the Vivoactive HR and she seems happy with that as well. She had a Vivosmart HR+ for about a week and that went back - over 3 minutes to get a GPS lock was…
