  • Gotta say that I don't agree with that song, it's not very nice to skinny women, who many guys find more attractive than Nicki Minaj types. Nothing better than squats for building the glutes - make sure you get your form right - don't stop half way down!
  • All Bran has 14g of protein per 100, so it's 40% more than most other cereals I've found.
  • Generally I think it's a good idea, but you've got to get your calorie deficit and training intensity/frequency right - too much training or too big a calorie deficit and you'll suffer overtraining symptoms - where you body is unable to recover fully between workouts.
  • I try to tell myself: "my body is burning fat at the moment, if I eat this I'll be storing more instead". Doesn't always work though :-(
  • It's interesting that there are so many polar opposite views on this. Tim Noakes, a well-respected sports and exercise professor describes low-carb and the state of ketosis as being the 'natural' and more healthy state for the human body. John McDougall, a well-respected physician describes the low-carb ketosis state as an…
  • That 1lb in 3 days might mostly be water and glycogen unfortunately. Don't be discouraged if your loss drops to 1lb every 7 days - more than that and you're likely losing muscle too - beware the dreaded skinny fat! Hiit is awesome though.
  • I really sympathise man, no one should be having to work two jobs to get through college. I don't think one can of coke zero will harm you though, just keep it at one can.
  • "But is it harmful to your body to restrict your carbohydrate intake?" - not according to many people who say they feel great and run marathons on very low carb/high fat diets. There are also many people who feel wretched on such diets. Check out Freelee (aka bananagirl) on youtube who is the opposite extreme, eating…
  • another strategy is just to eat the calories that provide a maintenance level at your target weight. It might be quite a big deficit now, and weight loss will get slower the nearer you get to your target, but the big advantage is you don't have to come off this diet and start eating more when you're make it there - you're…
  • Hi, welcome to the group! you'll find people are generally very helpful and friendly here

  • We're from a cool climate, where we need the high calories high fat diet to keep warm - that's my theory as to why british food is the way it is anyway. Some ideas: Shepard's pie with 5% fat mince, Ham and eggs, Jacket potato with baked beans (if you can find them abroad)
  • All comes down to calories in < calories out. Just avoid too big a calorie deficit after taking into account your running, I don't go lower than a 20% deficit. People say that too much long-distance running can cause muscle wasting, not sure if that's true, but I prefer short fast hilly runs, 3 miles max, they strengthen…
  • I think I might avoid that one, name puts me off for some reason
  • my work colleague who offered a piece of kitkat to me (b******d  )
  • Sorry to hear about your mother in law, if you were going under better circumstances I'd be suggesting loads of delicious (and healthy) spanish food to try. The food labeling in europe is pretty good, some supermarket brands are better than others a this. They all should have the per 100g somewhere though.
  • yep, the shredded wheat bitesize is what I have too, I have to sprinkle two teaspoons of demerera sugar on though - it has to be done. Here are the oats I have, quite a different nutrition strangely:
  • I turned 40 this year, and the diet and training methods are no different from when I was 20, although I suspect it might be taking me longer to recover between workouts (solved by adding an extra rest day) - but nothing like as bad as recovering from hangover is now.
  • I have a lot of oats too, they are great, but I notice they are about 8% fat - not a huge deal, but they do contribute to my daily fat allowance, and I have to be careful in other meals.
  • nice, I still manage to squeeze a daily 330ml can of beer into my diet :-)
  • Wow, that must be awesome, and you can eat white bread the rest of the day and no worries
  • All my life I've seen my father drink only 4 drinks: 1. Coffee 2. Tea 3. Wine 4. Beer So I think that blows the diuretic argument out of the water. In the 36 years I can remember him, I've never seen him drink juice, or water, or squash, or coke. I'm sure he must have done when there was nothing else available, but I can't…
  • It can be really tough trying to sleep when your feeling really hungry, i often give in at this point and eat some low sugar/low fat food (20 grams of healthy high fibre breakfast cereal with skimmed milk typically). Ideally I time my food so that I'm not completely ravenous at bed time, try to have my last meal at most 3…
  • Hampshire!
  • Nope, I see no reason to cut these out unless you have some gluten or lactose intolerance - in which case why would you be eating them anyway? I know the Paleo and Atkins diet see wheat as the root of all evils, but we've been eating it for 1000s of years now, and civilizations have been built on it! Ham is great for…
  • Welcome, the good news is when you're just starting out gains come fast and (relatively) easy.
  • Welcome to these forums, I've been on them for about a week and finding them very interesting and helpful. What are you looking to achieve?
  • I'm not saying cut all fat, 0.35 per lb of body weight you can get easily (oats are 8% fat for example). Just don't have extra.
  • I find it easier to focus on getting total calories and protein right (grams per kilo of body weight + extra corresponding to exercise regime), and let carbs and fat take care of themselves. Good luck!
  • I reckon portion size spoons and containers can have a useful role if you're eating clean (i.e. the food in question is 'healthy'), though I just visualize a handful of the food and that's a portion size for me. The main weakness of clean eating to lose weight is people lose sight of portion size I think.
  • In the USA are you allowed to call low/no fat yogurt 'Greek'? Here in the UK it's only called 'Greek Style'. I keep seeing americans talk about 0% fat greek yogurt, but can't find it in the supermarket over here. (I do love Greek yogurt with honey)
