Its as useful as a vehicle gas tank gauge. Without it you'd be underestimating or overestimating how much fuel you need. You'd be running out of gas sometimes but most of the time you'd be getting more than you need and having to store it (fat reserves for body energy)

You will get there. But work up to it. You'll be amazed at the things your body is capable of. Just keeping your HR at about 140 - 160 for 20 minutes or so is a pretty good work out. Don't worry about keeping pace. If stepping in place keeps it at 150 then do just that for now.
