  • Count me in. I am 58 and I joined MFP and started logging a little over a year ago. I started around 278 and severely obese for my height of 5'7". After a year, I am down over 80 pounds and I started weight lifting with a trainer. i am also starting a c25k program and hope to run ALL of a 5k in the fall. After a week, I…
  • Hey Scott, Welcome to MFP. I live in Colleyville. I started MFP almost a year ago at 278lbs. I am 5'11 and 58 years old, which put me in the severely obese category. About 4 years ago, I had a massive heart attack, which nearly took my life. I know I needed to get my weight under control and take my health seriously, but I…
  • Alcohol affects people differently. In my experience, while losing weight, it will temporarily stall my progress or may cause me to gain weight. Therefore, I have to look at alcohol consumption as MORE than just additional calories. The liver has many functions and plays a key role in weight loss by processing fat. It also…
  • Fluid ounces and Ounces are different measures: Fluid ounces are a volume measurement, like a quart, gallon, etc. (use measuring cups to get a fluid ounce) ounces are a weight measurement, like a pound. (use a food scale to measure ounces) Weight measurements are more accurate for calorie counting than fluid ounces.
  • I am 57 and I would not comment on a woman co-workers' weight. Good friends, or family members, yes, but co-workers, not unless they bring it up first, and then only rarely. It is NOT because I did not notice or that I was jealous or whatever. There have been numerous times that I had to bite my tongue NOT to offer…
  • 5'11" age 57, male SW: 277 CW: 221 GW: 175 Major interim goal: 114 (When I reach 114, I will be out of the Obese category for the first time in over 30 years. I am 6 pounds from this goal)
  • Congrats!! This may not be PC (politically correct) coming from a married man and please do not take this the wrong way, but you look amazingly beautiful!!
  • I am from Texas and we eat at tex-mex restaurants almost every week. Here is what I do: 1. Ask for corn tortillas. they are NOT fried and about 50 cals per. I eat Guacamole and salsa with corn tortillas, no chips. I try to go light on the salsa and more on the guacamole. More calories in guacamole, but the nutritional…
  • Garmin app is now connecting, but is will not sync to MFP. I tried delinking and relinking, but it did not work.
  • The Garmin app has been down all day for me. At least 9 hours. Very frustrating!! Fitbit may be my next activity tracker because of this.
  • As of today, I have 49.5 lbs to go. Down 25 so far.
  • I am 57 and I have been struggling with my weight my whole life. Losing weight AND keeping it off is much mental as it is physical. I am the type of person that can have a huge meal and then announce that I am going on a diet and I am immediately hungry. If something is working for you, Herbalife, WW, Paleo, whatever, then…
  • feel free to add me
  • I went to my favorite Mexican food restaurant after I started CICO, Abuelos. Ordered and ate without checking calories. They serve the best side dish, Papas Con Chile, which is basically mashed potatoes with cheese. I thought how many calories for mashed potatoes, right? The restaurant chain is not big enough to require…
  • I am jumping in here and defending the poster who mentioned "starvation mode." It does exist and is a euphemism for adaptive thermogenisis. It does not happen quite the way the poster described, but the point is the same. Basically, it is a physiological response to a sustained, low calorie intake. The brain is protecting…
  • My tracker has a progressive goal feature (garmin). When I started, it set my goal for me based on my daily activity. I did not believe that my schedule would allow time to get over 10,000 steps per day. I decided that I would meet or exceed the goal set for me every day. As I met the goal, the next days goal was…

  • Great job and very inspiring. I started my latest journey on Feb 1 and slowly built up my walking to 11,000 steps per day (a little over 5 miles). I do not have time in my day for more. I have purchased a stationary bike for my office and I ride when reading a memo or report. I have along way to go, but your story and…
  • Congrats!! I am just starting out. How did you do it? Counting calories only? Low carbs? both?
