  • I found a local place that rents snow shoes w/poles- so before investing in a pair I'm going to try it out. Thanks for all the great advice, info and general input. :)

  • Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts and relevant information- trying to rent a pair first is probably a good idea. My only concern really is of being in/on very deep snow- this kind of freaks me out. I'm 60 so not as agile as I used to be. :p
  • OP- how long have you been at it? After 4.5 months my losses are slowing down - and yep-I do get discouraged at times. So I take a break day now and then- up my calories and have a few extra treats or just eat more in general for a day or two. This mental break usually helps me stay the course.(but can't do it too often!)…
  • I'm curious to know, what was your starting weight? You look absolutely incredible!
  • I'm 5'3" and 155 is my goal weight! (from 193) But- I'm 60 and don't need to be thin- I'll be happy to go from obese to just "overweight"- but I'll see what I think once I get to 155. Anyway-you look absolutely fabulous- congrats to you!
  • I'm 5' 3" - started at 193- down to 175- about 1 pound a week. I don't lose much if I eat over 1300 cal. a day. I walk several times a week (3 miles and use a recumbent bike at home a few days a week. I initially started at 1450 and was only losing .25 pounds a week. I did this for about a month than dropped to 1300 and…
  • From what I understand- once you increase calories from an extreme deficit it is natural for you to become VERY hungry! So eat! You're body is begging for proper nutrition. And- what is your goal? Are you trying to maintain weight? Gain weight? If your plan is to begin hormone therapy at some point, you would have to be…
  • Hey there! I just turned 60. I also set my weight loss goal at about 40 pounds. I'm 5' 3" and eat 1300 cal. a day. MPF gave me 1200, but I simply can't sustain that so I bumped it up a bit. I've been consistently losing about a pound a week- I'm down 19 pounds in 17 weeks. For exercise I mostly walk outside- started with 1…
  • I weigh/measure most of what I eat- this has created far more success than I've had in the past. It keeps me consistent, more accountable, and just becomes a habit really- but different things work for different people.
  • Mostly sunny and high of 48 here in Portland, Maine today- pretty darn nice for December 1st! But as the saying goes here....if you don't like the weather- wait a minute. Drastic temp changes are common here and we Mainers spend a great deal of time talking about the weather :D

  • Awwwww- wish I'd seen this thread sooner- I've been walking a lot all month- :'( Being in New England, I'm not sure how I'll do in the December cold but I'm sure going to try to continue- As long as it's at least 30 degrees (no wind) I'll be okay- I just love getting outside.
  • I don't eat fast food in general- makes me feel sick after ingesting, but I must admit to liking their french fries when they're hot. Not much else there interests me-
  • I think my face is going to look older once it deflates more- I'm 60 and had decent skin and few wrinkles- now I'm seriously starting to see lots of them-bummer- but at least I'll have good cheekbones! And yes, I already use really good skin care products so I guess I'll get what I get!
  • Yep, no way is 10 pounds one size down- I'm 5'3"- have lost 18 lb. from a 40lb. goal- started in a snug 16-now in a snug 14- So 18 pounds to get down a size. I honestly think it will take another 20lbs. more to get down to a 12- But some of us ladies just need more room for our voluptuous lower halves. ;)
  • That picture is too funny! Did they factor in the extra weight you were carrying? hahahahaaha-During my last few walks I used "Map My Walk" on my iphone and also wore a pedometer (my own little experiment since I thought my pedometer was off). Turns out my pedometer tracks about .75 of a mile less than then the GPS app! I…
  • Thanks bwogilvie for sharing your experience and for the references-it's helpful. I was looking at the Leki poles- I'm trying to convince my walking partner to get poles too- than we can both get odd looks :D To hear that you've been able to walk faster is encouraging.
  • Thanks for the suggestion, unfortunately, as I previously mentioned, I have a messed up shoulder and can't do this type of exercise-I used to like regular rowing machines but can no longer use. I was considering the poles because of my shoulder as they don't add weight just more motion-which doesn't bother me so much with…
  • After the research I've done, I do understand what you're saying- thanks for sharing your experience. And yeah- my impression was that it's probably not as easy as it looks
  • Since I posted my question, I have read articles/watched videos too. Being older- I was also interested in the idea of the poles taking pressure off the spine and helping with knee/hip pain and that it does burn more calories than regular walking. I guess this is a very popular activity in Europe (started in Finland) but…
  • Skipping food? On Thanksgiving? I've been looking forward to NOT skipping anything for weeks! Bring it on! However-my appetite is much smaller so I will definitely eat smaller portions...of everything! I'm most looking forward to rolls, stuffing, and mashed potatoes w/gravy. Stuff I seldom eat anymore- and of course PIE!…
  • I am interested in "nordic walking"- which is very different than using poles for stability on various terrain. It's more about engaging upper body- the trails I walk are flat. I understand what you're saying about the hiking though-Thanks so much for your response.

  • I'll log guesstimates just out of curiousity, but plan on eating whatever I want. Having a much smaller appetite now will prevent me from going completely insane- having these splurges to look forward to makes weight loss much more endurable for me- however, I will not be keeping leftover desserts in the house :'( - will…
  • Peanut butter! - started using PB2 to get my peanut butter fix. Also cheese- hard for me to eat just 1 oz. I don't keep any sweets in the house because I have no self-control. When I do have something sweet I buy just one of something (candy bar/ice cream cone) or find an alternative (Love Crunch or Kind bars are pretty…
  • Wow! I'm also 5'3"- started at 193- nice to see where I'm headed! I'm currently at 175- you look wonderful
  • Seriously? Are you kidding? That's incredible-
  • Wow! This is so great! I'm 60 so I KNOW what it takes to get going when you're older. Congrats to you-I bet you're feeling sooooo much better these days- I know I am!
  • I can't believe the change in your face! Of course your body looks amazing too, but I'm always amazed at how peoples' faces change from weight loss. You're very handsome in all photos, but wow what a jaw line you have now! I love looking at all of these before and afters- all very inspiring
