  • I'm an old guy who is smart phone illiterate. My grandchildren have not showed my how to use it yet. :-) Can't help you there. I just have a Vivofit watch. It counts a lot of movement as steps. e.g. Last night I was making sourdough bread. All that motion of gathering ingredients, mixing, and kneading counted as steps.…
  • I see you started a constructive conversation here, Hotelsma. Nice going.
  • You should not be feeling dizzy. No, that's not normal. How long does it last? Have you ever had Vertigo, or feel like you were going to faint? The first thing I would do is email or phone you doctor and ask HIM what he thinks. Just don't ignore it when your body is trying to tell you something.
  • Swim 20 laps(1,000 yards) three days/ week. Weight machine routine twice a week. Agile and healthy at 79. Life is good. Be healthy and happy.
  • Hello and welcome to MFP, Chelsea, I'm a 79 year old man who has been coming here to count calories for about 3 years now. Have only lost about 11 lbs. 9 more to go. First came here after major surgery. Had lost 20 lbs being on I.V.s at the hospital for so long. Started MFP to try and lose those 20 lbs I gained in…
  • Welcome to MFP, Tushar. I am 79 years old and retired. Have been counting calories here for about 3 years. Love swimming laps at the local YMCA 3 days a week and use weight machines 2 days/week. Have only lost about 11 lbs. but have turned a lot of fat into muscle by staying active. Like you, I am trying to lose about 20…
  • Very interesting addition to the conversation, Ann. You are right. It is my "perception" that the activities I do as an 80 year old are more difficult, and I have to "work harder" to accomplish them, than when I was 20. The "compendium" you offered seems to acknowledge that age is a factor in the RMR, as you state. "the…
  • Good point, AnnPT77. It's a simple matter of Physics. Calories, like ergs, and joules, are all measurements of work. So does an 80 year old have to work harder, or the same, to burn the same calories of a 20 year old to swim the same distance. If one has to work harder, by definition, aren't they burning more calories?
  • What if we assume both swimmers efficiency is the same. The only difference is one is 80 and the other 20 years old. Would they both be burning the same number of calories swimming the same speed over the same length of time. When I manually record my lap swimming it only asks the length of time and speed or effort. There…
  • When I am swimming laps, my mind wanders. Question came up today while swimming. Google really didn't help much. But then I am no tech guru, for sure.
  • Shae, you say you "despise salads and most vegetables." The odds are that most of us, including myself, have never tried .0001% of the edible fruits and vegetables there are. That's because there are over 390,000 varieties of edible plants in the world. When it comes to fruits it's more astounding. Bananas alone have 1,600…
  • That would put me right on top of my back yard leach bed where the grass is always greener.
  • My go to, year around drink is Ice Tea. I make it at home on a bi - daily basis. Always use bulk Gunpowder Green Tea and make a gallon at a time. I always add lemon juice, Splenda, and garden fresh mint in summer. FYI. Gunpowder Green Tea is the type of tea that was thrown into Boston Harbor that started the American…
  • Hi there dktsot2000, I'm pretty much new here too. Am healing from major 7 1/2 hour surgery in which I lost 30 lbs, but then gained about half of it back. I know what you mean when you say "have a long battle ahead." But Welcome to M.F.P and here's to your healthy future.
  • Now that you are running, you have left all that behind you. Runners always focus on what's ahead.
  • Thank you, distinctlybeau for your answer. I keep track of my strength training also. To me the problem is how to turn that workout information into accurate calorie burn numbers.
  • My surgeons had me drink protein smoothies for at least 6 months before I had a major 7 1/2 hour surgery two years ago. So you are right DS, I not only survived and lost 30 lbs., from days of I.V.'s, but healed nicely.
  • I get sore when I start a new exercise with too much enthusiasm. So my body lets me know that I should let off a little and my brain tells me "don't quit all together." Other than a hot bath, I like a product called "Sore No More": Natural Pain Relieving Gel. I buy it on Amazon. It takes soreness away IMMEDIATELY. It does…
  • Thanks for the answers. FOUND IT! :)
  • For years I have been making my own cereal by buying individual grains, like thick cut oats, barley, kashi, wheat bran, flax seed, pepitas, walnut pieces, and sunflower seed, in bulk from my local OutPost store. You might say my morning cereal has been as much of a project as it is a cooked morning cereal. (Only cook the…
