Great article! OP - Good luck! It's a really tough lifestyle for losing weight, but you've started! I read the article and thought it had some great advice. Also, I just want to echo what everyone else said: plan plan plan! And if you eat something not on your plan / go over calories, just log it and move on with life. You…

It's possible you may have set yourself back by responding to his fit, but it sounds like you're aware of it. So just be careful not to do it again. Your methods sound right though: waiting until he is quiet for letting him out. It sounds like you're not locking him in at night. I would really recommend that. He will…

For eating out a lot, remember that you'll get better at estimating if you're super strict at home about weighing. Early on, it may be easy to look at a plate full of food and have no idea what's on it. I had some down time and spent 2 weeks mainly eating at home. I carefully packed any food I ate away from home. I lost…

Oh, adorable! I know it can be completely overwhelming. You can do this! Crate training is AWESOME because it deals with potty, chewing, and every other bad behavior *if* done right and consistently. So here's what I mean: In the crate The dog stays in the crate EVERY MINUTE that you are not watching him. This means, if…

I'm glad to know that macros make a difference. How did you find someone to adjust them for you? I think this is more what I was looking for when I started this thread - understanding what my macros should be.

Sorry to disappear, I'm not a daily forum user. I've ready all your thoughts and appreciate the answers. Thank you to the people that actually addressed my question. Several of you said 68 g is not very high. Considering it's double what I comfortably eat, I have no idea how you manage to do 100 g. Today was a great…

I'm curious about this. In fairness, I haven't tried it very often - but my understanding is that the barcode is mostly for pre-packaged goods, like cereals. Is that right? I mostly buy fresh veggies and meats, I don't think it's much use for that, or am I mistaken?

Hi Liz! I'm happy to join you. Feel free to add me. You can read my story on my profile. I'm not vegan - love well-cooked meats - but eat mostly vegetables. I'm from LA and miss the Mediterranean-influenced California foods. I would love to ask.... Why did you choose to go vegan? I know a lot of people taut the health…

I'd also suggest making sure you're counting your calories accurately. I think a lot of people are off by hundreds of calories per day. I recommend getting a scale and weighing in grams. It's far more accurate than measuring in cups. Also, really watch oils and butters - and extra tbsp of oil is 120 calories. If you've…

Been a mildly tough week. Was stuck in lectures for 40 hours and weather was terrible / cold - didn't get much exercise. In addition, my hormones seem to be off, so water retention. I also tried to prep my food for the week and got terribly bored of the menu. I started at 213.8 lbs, ate carefully for 3 days, then checked…

Well, I'm new here, but I've actually been impressed with how nice people are here. I generally avoid internet forums, but this one is actually encouraging me to check in sometimes... which also encourages me to get online and log food. So that's all good!

Love this post!

I'd like to second the idea that your logging might be more inaccurate than you think. For example, 1 tbl of oil is 120 calories. If you sauté some veggies, you might easily add an extra 100-200 calories if you don't measure your oil precisely. If you don't already, I recommend getting a scale ($20) and weighing everything…

Agree with both comments above! Just pick one small habit. Personally, I find that focusing on just food OR exercise is good. For example, when I start to eat better, I have more energy and find myself walking the dog more / longer. Or when I start exercising, by body craves healthier foods. Pick whichever one seems easier…

Ok, glad to hear it. Just never sure what someone's relationship with their mother is like. And yeah, if she was worried, she was probably trying to reassure both of you. Good luck on getting things worked out!

@1stplace4health So true! I've got that mentality too! What did we ever do without these fitness trackers?
-
@courtneyfabulous I think our modern jobs are so terrible for us. I hate the sitting, staring at a computer for eight hours. So unhealthy. Good for you for holding steady as you return to work!

Forgot to weigh in yesterday, although I'm finding daily weighing is useful. I've heard so many people say all the reasons not to focus on daily weight, but recognizing that weight will fluctuate, I find it encouraging and a good reminder at the start of each day. So daily weighing works for me at this time! Also a…

Agreed, not normal. Definitely not normal. But no need to freak out either. Eat more / better, cut back on exercise, and go see a doctor. The biggest concern I hear now is that your mom isn't concerned. Is she suggesting you shouldn't see a doctor? Do you need her to see the dr? If her opinion makes it difficult for you to…

First off, good for you for recognizing your mistake. The goal is health, not just weight loss! Make sure the "body you want" is the body that is healthy for you. Second, while you are right to be concerned, you really don't need to freak out about your period. Don't be scared, just be responsible. Here are a couple things…

Congrats! It's always so encouraging to see those numbers lower than expected! Sounds like you're on track to schedule a surgery in a few months!

First off, congratulations! You've lost almost half your goal! 17 lbs is great! I don't know the details of your situation, but I would agree with @ercarroll311 that you probably need more than 1200 calories. Personally, I have more than 50 lbs to lose and find that 1350 is a good goal for me. I also use a fitness tracker…

@traz1973 Welcome! Great goal - wish you well!

Wow, I had to check that I hadn't posted this myself. I'm the same weight and height, and your sentence about "the incongruity of your mental image and reality" is exactly how I feel!

@juliet3455 thanks for all the helpful links! I'll definitely check them out!

Today I had a little lesson in the importance of tracking food immediately. I had written down my food all day, planning to log it in the evening. I hate the amount of time it takes to log multiple times a day. I'd had eaten three light meals and a snack, and was feeling pretty hungry. So I decided to grab a snack and log…

Cool, I'll check it out and experiment. Thanks for the tips!

I have been logging it all separately, but one thing I don't like is how it make the log look. I know that sounds minor, but when I flip through a few days before and see "chicken, yogurt, avacado...." I have to try and guess which recipe it was. Plus it makes the log pretty long. It's so much easier to see "Chicken Salad,…

I really appreciate everyone's responses! I've definitely got some great ideas here. One final question if people don't mind. I rarely make a recipe exactly the same - I tend to cook to taste and substitute. For some of the things I cook more often, I'd like to create a recipe with portions... but the ingredients can…
