Permanent is better than fast. Find a fitness buddy at work or start a before school walk/run program for the kids that will allow you to exercise with them. Students can be a great motivator.

I have found alternating run with walk as my body can handle it best. It even strengthened my legs to support my bad knees. Go to a running store and tell them your goals and pains.
