  • Welcome to the T2D club. I know it was NOT one you were looking to join. I think especially at the start logging everything and checking BG on a schedule will help you get an idea of how your body is responding to changes in diet and meds. This was probably the most important thing for me.
  • I am strict keto, so I am the wrong one to respond probably. I shoot for 10 net carbs max a day. My counsel would be to pick a number of nets carbs as your max and stick to that. You know what will work for you. I think a fairly consistent number helps your doctor manage meds.
  • So it is the fasting number that is high? Mine always is and the doctor focuses on the A1C. I would avoid the empty carbs and focus on healthy, regular meals as a first step. I follow a very low carb - keto - diet. This works very well for me, but some people are not suited to it. Tell us where you land! You can get all…
  • I have been keto since 2016. I find the diet suits me, but it is a lifestyle. FWIW, I stick to basic foods and don't typically eat anything "special." People at work understand that I am a seriously picky eater at this point, and so snack tables will often include cheese squares and broccoli so I will have something. A…
  • I just don't eat bread. That may not be a good solution for you. My wife likes low carb tortillas for wraps and things. Tell us what you find. I hope other people tell you what they are doing. At one point we used to make almond flour "mug bread" to have something toasted with breakfast.
  • No kidding - I am so sorry about the cat. Congrats on the BG management!
  • How did the day go?
  • Yeah - watch for lows...
  • That might have been the one I used. I have a new phone and never reinstalled.
  • I was never able to figure out how to make MFP track BG. There is probably some way. I used to track it with an app on my phone, and that worked very well.
  • The doctor gave me a serious set of tests. The results were all boring. CRP was on the low end of normal this time. Everything else was on the good end of the normal range. The nurse called today, but I had already seen the numbers online. This is all good news for me...
  • I have an appointment for labs tomorrow, but it is a follow-up on a previous appointment. My CRP was way out of range on those labs and the doctor wants to see if that was just a fluke or a trend...
  • Rant away. Diabetes is managed. I like to think of remission as "recovery." We are still diabetics, we just have the BG under control (for a while at least). Everyone wants a simple solution to pretty much everything. This is a cultural/social weak spot in our armor. We fall prey to people who promise quick (whatever).…
  • Hey! Glad you are here. Let us know how things go with the nutritionist. Did the doctor start you on meds?

  • I totally get that. I have also come to appreciate that NOTHING is a one-size-fits-all despite the medical establishment's wanting to put us in tidy boxes. I claim most people need to figure it out for themselves honestly. One of the reasons I think people are well served by checking BG a lot at first so that they have…
  • Welcome Lee! It sounds as if you have a plan and are getting things under control. You have made a lot of progress so far. Don't be discouraged...
  • I think the mini goals are a great strategy. I have a sheet of smiley face stickers, maybe I need to start applying them to my calendar!

  • The lows are dangerous, and you don't want those for sure. Holding out for a decent A1C anyway...
  • I am keto. I stay under 10 net carbs a day mostly. I have a hard limit of 20. It has worked very well for me and feels like a pretty natural way to eat.
  • Good counsel as a practical starting point that should give you a solid foundation as you get this sorted.

  • I hear you. I had luck with keto, but that is hard for some people. If you are cooking for a family, it might be tough to juggle everything. I like the menu logging feature in MFP. If you can find some people also interested in losing weight who log and can help with accountability, you might find that works keep on track.…

  • You are welcome to add me. I log meals and am on every day.
  • Doctor's appointment went well. He is happy with the diet. Vitals are all good.
  • This is wise counsel. We are good with venting here too...
  • I had a blood draw before a diabetes checkup next week. A1C was 6.1
  • When I was diagnosed in 2016 my A1C was 13.4 or 13.5. I can't remember, but it was crazy high. I found metformin and dietary changes got things managed pretty quickly. I was discouraged because it seemed to take the metformin a while to start working, and my numbers were horrible when I checked. Within a month or so, the…
  • I claim that most recently diagnosed T2 diabetics would learn a lot about BG management if they were routinely prescribed one until the numbers got sorted using whatever means. I have never had one, but I am curious to know what my BG is doing at night.
  • Glad to have you back! Happy (and healthy) 2023 to you...
  • Always good to have ambitious goals...
  • What if I want to be happier than I deserve? Hope everyone has a great new year!
