  • Fast Friday class was good, the workout was done by our fastest (and most experienced swimmer). Warm-up: 4x75 swim/kick/drill/swim 2x100 kick/drill 1x50 fast 1x50 ez 2x75 kick/drill 1x75 fast 1x75 ez 2x50 kick/drill 1x100 fast 1x100 ez 1x100 for time Relay race involving all swimmers each swimming 25 the first time and 50…
  • Tues 90 minutes (645 active calories) of working on things from last coaching session: more breathing and hand entry position; Same on Wed but only 75 minutes (459 active calories); Same on Thurs (today) but stretched it to 120 minutes (778 active calories). Today the pool was 85.6F: bleech! Class in the morning: I hope…
  • Today I tried a new pool--25 meters instead of 25 yards--and I swam without my cap and without the snorkel I use for warm-up and some drills. Pushed harder and did 4,000 meters, 90 minutes, 765 active calories.
  • Saturday I was back in the suburbs swimming for my coach. First a review in the pool of what I have been working on the last two weeks--breathing--and then most of the time I was swimming in the tank and then finishing up in the pool. A tank is great because it lets your coach stand next to you as you swim and see what you…
  • Friday was Swim Athletics "Fast Friday". The problem is that our trainer left the company, so it was just us swimmers in the pool. The athletic director of the gym put up a workout, but it was terrible. Our fastest and most experienced swimmer put up a workout and we swam that, which was great, minus the coaching. Warm-up:…
  • @fishgutzy "Active calories" is a term the Apple Watch 2 is using. They figure that there are rest calories--calories you burn if you are just sitting at a computer--and active calories--the calories you expend from exercising. So for a 670 active calorie swim of 90 minutes, I probably had something like 850 total calories…
  • Rinse and repeat of the last several days: breathing drills. But what happened today is that something clicked and somehow it was easier doing the same drills than the days before. It is not as easy as I think it should be yet, but it is better. 90 minutes, 4000 yards, 670 active calories.
  • Yesterday was another rinse-and-repeat of breathing work. 3,000 yards, 90 minutes, 559 active calories. It was also my 75th day in a row of meeting my daily active calorie goal, which is 900 active calories. I am walking five miles a day or a bit more as well to make up the additional calories.
  • Unless they are my friend and I know we swim the same speed or don't mind waiting, I split the lane, which is the same as just each taking a side. Circling is for well matched people who are working together.
  • Today was a rinse-and-repeat of yesterday. Are you getting bored with this yet? I am not. I am making progress, though it is inches and I have yards to go still. 90 minutes, working on breathing with a variety of drills, roughly 3000 yards, 587 active calories.
  • Today I started a new contract, so my day was a bit ragged, but they agreed to allow me time off in the middle of the day each day so I can go swim, because I start too early to swim first and I really do not want to swim in the evening when the pool is busy some nights. Today was a rinse-and-repeat of yesterday: more…
  • Swimming was a rinse and repeat of yesterday: 2 hours of swimming, working on breathing with a variety of drills, probably about 6,000 yards. Must not have pushed as hard today as I only burned 741 active calories.
  • LOL. I know the feeling.
  • @Montepuiciano yes, active recovery is just that. Right now I am using a snorkel during active recovery and swimming freestyle at an easy pace. The idea is that you don't stop after a strong or fast section; you just keep swimming and let your heart rate come back down as you swim and then you go right into whoever is next…
  • Today's Swim Athletics class was Fast Friday, but with a different trainer it was a bit different (more fast, no active recovery, no kicking). Warm-up: 300 swim 4x100: 50 tombstone kick/ 50 swim 4x50: drill Main set: 2x100: 70% effort, 30 sec rest 4x75: 80% effort, 20 sec rest 6x50: 90% effort, 10 sec rest Relay race…
  • Wrong topic. Delete this post.
  • Yeah, that would definitely be world class: 141 laps of 50 meters times 29 seconds would be 68 minutes for just over 7,000 meters. Katie Ledecky's record is 1,500 meters in 15-1/2 minutes. Sun Yang has done the same in 14-1/2 minutes.
  • Swam a second time, as this is Thursday. Reswam the Swim Athletics workout this evening with people who cannot make the morning class. Same 2000 yards as above, but in 40 minutes this time. 575 active calories. Put me over 1800 active calories today. If only every day were like this...
  • 90 minutes pretty much continuous. Working on effortless, low breath with hips and feet staying high and streamlined, "closing the book" when the head comes back at the same time as the lead arm starts to pull, all part of early breath and relaxed one-arm swimming while breathing away from the stroking arm. Some strong…
  • Swim Athletics class this morning. Warm-up: 4x75 odd-swim, even-drill 3x50 kick, descend 1-3 4x25 odd-drill, even-descend 1-4 Main set: 9x150 1-3: 50 drill, 50 swim, 50 drill 4-6: 85% effort, 50 drill, 100 swim 7-9: best average (fast) Warm-down: 100 EZ 45 minutes. 2000 yards, 504 active calories
  • Here is a ramp test they did in Australia with a swimmer who, at the end, goes 50 m in 29 secs. He is keeping his stroke count almost consistent (31-34 per 50 m) through the test, but each time they increase the stroke rate (from 45 to 72). https://youtube.com/watch?v=gB2On3Bi5BM The results are pretty dramatic (first…
  • Definitely a Finis snorkel with the flow restrictor in place. Great for warm-ups, warm-downs and active recovery. Apple Watch 2 for tracking my activity. It currently does not count laps (or calories) when you are kicking, but that is a software update. When I mix in kick sets with my swimming I use "Other Fitness" and it…
  • Wow, that is shame. I hope you get getter soon. I am swimming seven days a week now, twice on Thursdays. My next goal is a 29 second 50 (SCY) and a 59 second 100. I dropped three seconds off both my 50 kick and 100 free last week (compared to a couple of months ago). Would like to do that again this week, LOL. This morning…
  • I swim every day and I condition without shampooing my hair. Then once a week or when it gets feeling a little gross I wash it and then condition it. The conditioner alone protects and does some cleaning.
  • I think the most important is: are you enjoying it enough to be motivated to continue? Staying with your exercise program is more important than increasing your activity. Give it a try and if you look forward to the swims, keep at it. But never be afraid to skip a swim in order to keep motivated to do the next workout.
  • Congrats on your progress. All the little steps are important. What do you mean you shortchanged yourself swimming? Swimming is a great workout. Do you mean you just didn't swim for long enough? I did a 90 minute swim this morning and burnt 750 active calories. Gotta keep that going...
  • Inch-by-inch and pound-by-pound. Well done! Keep us updated on your progress.
  • Having absolutely nothing in my closet that fits any more--except for a suit I bought more than 20 years ago.
  • Well done! It is hard work losing that much weight. I started at 266 lbs two years ago and am down to 199 lbs this morning, with another 15 lbs to go or so (I am 6-0 tall). So we have lost the same amount of weight in about the same amount of time. Do you figure you are at your ideal weight or are you going to try and lose…
  • I swim--and shower--every day. I used to shampoo every time and I tried some "swim" shampoos without great success. Now I just condition during each shower and only shampoo every few days, whenever my hair feels dirty. This has helped a lot.
