Well, November turned out to be one of my lowest mileage totals of the year - I ran less in February (when the weather was appalling), May and July (when I was injured) - and yet looking back, it felt like a good month. Coming back from shin issues at the end of October, I increased from two runs a week to four, keeping…

Well, last week was another good one for running - I ran three days for a total 11.72 miles, a nice but not too big jump from the prior week’s 9.31 miles. I’m hoping for 15.10 this week and then I’ll take a cutback week and then (hopefully, finally) get back to a 10% weekly increase schedule. Fingers crossed. One week at a…

I've never run an ultra so I really probably keep my mouth shut, but from poking around the internet a bit it looks like it's pretty normal for a 50 mile plan to include 2-3 weeks of taper (and the first of those weeks includes a race, so that's its own thing) and max out the long run around 30 miles. It looks like 31 is…

No, that last column is labeled "Saturday" - I think y'all are reading it as the weekly total line. There's a bunch of 20+ runs in the first column, "Sunday". It looks like the plan maxes out week 24 with a 31 mile run/65 mile week followed by a week with what I'd guess is a half marathon race, then a couple weeks of taper…

I’m not sure why I’ve fallen behind on posting here - maybe I’ve just been so focused on trying to live my best practices that I haven’t had time to faff around online as much as usual. In any case, I got caught up on posts this morning (hugs all around, and message me, @mbaker566, if you’d like another for your nag…

Lol, in spite of all my edits, I missed that in paragraph two I said phone instead of watch (re: battery dying) and then in paragraph four said watch instead of phone (ie. what I leave at home). Oops!

Like @PastorVincent said, it really depends on what you want from it. In terms of being tethered to a phone, you can use the Garmins as fitness trackers without a phone, but you're probably still dumping all that data onto a computer at the end of the day and using a website or app. That's also the case with the Apple…

Today I got to run 1.69 miles to the gym. It was really, really cold, and kind of hard, but worth it. I keep intending *THIS* week to be the one I start building mileage again, but weekend plans keep getting in the way. Or, I keep choosing to let them get in the way. In any case, two weeks ago was a wedding, then this past…

Hah, I almost asked a very similar question - I've struggled a lot with consistency this year, so I might have a week of increased mileage followed by two or three low mileage weeks. I don't want to start at zero when my legs are feeling better, but I also don't want to treat two or three weeks the same way as I would…

I'm still catching up after a weekend away (only three pages to go!) but wanted to respond to this because I've found that the same strategies apply to living with mental/chronic illness as well. When I'm having a bad day, I figure out what absolutely positively MUST get done, and if I have to skip every single thing on…

Today I got to run 1.66 miles to the gym. It was cold and hard but worth it. November Total: 3.31 miles November Goals: Run 50 miles, lift 2-3x/week, 15 minutes/day of moderate cardio, 15 minutes/day of mobility.

Plans for 2020! I know that I want to repeat the TCM 10 Miler or 10K if the lottery doesn't go my way. TCM also does a Valentine’s 5K, and there just aren’t a lot of options in January or March so I’m thinking I’ll repeat two races I enjoyed this year. The Strive races are a small series benefiting a nearby school district…

Well, I rounded off last month with another short run to the gym, my first run in a little more than a week after the shin pain started up again. It felt tough, but not miserable. I ended the month with 41.2 miles, just a hair more than September. This month I’ve scheduled 50 miles, but am really hoping to focus on…

My leg is better but still hurting today, and my knee decided to start griping in solidarity, so it’s a DNS for tomorrow’s 10k. Good luck to everyone who’s racing this weekend and hopefully I’ll be back on the road in a couple of days.

Well, it’s been a fun rollercoaster of a couple of days. I decided to skip my run on Tuesday given the wind advisory, although I did make it to the gym and had a great time with heavy squats, though the back of my neck still hurts from the barbell. Then yesterday I ended up cutting my planned 5 mile run extremely short…

I sort of got lost a couple of weeks ago even using GPS while trying to get out of the cornfields of south-central Minnesota and back to the Twin Cities - I was going in the right direction, but got sent down some random unpaved roads that ended up adding 20-25 minutes to our trip. And all that because I turned the wrong…

Ummmm... how do you dress to run 2.3 miles in overcast, drizzly, 45F but feels like 7F because of a wind advisory? I can't remember the last time I saw a gap that big! I really want to run, but I also have the car (so I could drive to the gym instead of running) and maybe I should take a pass since the weather's going to…

Two more runs under my belt this week and somehow I’m still on track for my monthly goal! Admittedly I think I lowered it earlier in the month, but I’ll still count it as a win if I can come in on target. I need at least 55.38 miles to top my monthly distance PR for 2019 and right now I’m on track for 61.50. Anyhow, my…

Whether it's intentional or not, persistently rude behavior is still persistently rude behavior. I haven't run races where you have to squeeze to pass people, but I have run races where people are packed close enough for portions that you really do need to signal and step to the side when you slow down or risk getting run…

I’m behind on updating this month, but I’m right on target for my monthly mileage goal, so that’s nice! With my last long race done for the year, I’m re-focusing on consistency, aiming for four runs per week. With the weather getting cooler (and in the spirit of keeping hard days hard and easy days easy) I’m getting back…

An appropriately timed question, as my runs earlier this week were in mid to high 50s and now I'm preparing to go out in 33 feels like 22. On the advice of one of the fine winter runners here, I started a spreadsheet last year where I tracked what I wore on my runs by temperature and made comments for future reference,…

Yesterday I got to run 2.41 miles to the gym, taking the slightly-extended route along the nearer lakeshore. Reading @7Lenny7’s race report reminds me once again how incredibly good I’ve got it as an urban runner - three of the four lakes that the Twin Cities Marathon (aka "The Most Beautiful Urban Marathon in America”)…

Well, there were almost 10,000 people ahead of me, but I'll take it. I really was worried about being caught by the elite marathoners, though, so I'm super glad that didn't happen. And yeah, I'm on the shorter side (5'2") but @7lenny7 is definitely a tall dude. When I'm feeling insecure about being slow, which happens less…
-
Hah, minor details! I finished in 2:03:31, slower than my arbitrary two hour target, but ahead of the marathon winners (who started 40 minutes after I did), which was the only thing I’d really wanted to avoid.

Hit my calorie goal head on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, and then didn't log a BITE on Sunday. Race days are like birthdays, right - calories don't count? Hah. Trying to decide about taking myself out to dinner tonight or not, which will probably determine whether I meet my goal. I'll log it either way!

Yesterday I ran somewhere between 10 and 10.32 miles at the Twin Cities Marathon Weekend Ten Mile race (I forgot to turn off my watch at the finish line). It was a beautiful day to run, and although I didn’t run as strong as I’d hoped, I finished the race and am feeling good today. Race report under the spoiler! October…

On the one hand, I definitely think there's a contingent of people (in the US at least) who are waaaaaaay too worried about food being "clean", whether that means dirt or chemicals or whatever. On the other hand, there seems to be some real trends in the last few years towards more food-borne illnesses, although it doesn't…

FROM YESTERDAY: Twin Cities Marathon Weekend is here!!! I actually managed to drag myself out of bed at a reasonably early hour, which is good, since I’ll need to be up even earlier the next two days. I got a solid few hours of work in and then biked downtown to catch the light rail to St. Paul to the expo for packet…

@143tobe : Congratulations! That’s a great time for a tough course!

Subtract ten degrees from either end and that's this week in Minneapolis.
