  • I thought that this thread would be about taking your dog for a run while you biked. Not that good an idea for the dog. He will be running most of the time which can lead to hip problems in some large breeds, better to just walk a dog somewhere he can go off leash and run but have time to stop and sniff. For other people's…
  • I'm a construction engineer and lots of trades guys also have heavy belts. They usually get straps for them that go across the shoulders and take the weight off the hips and place it in the shoulders where it really belongs. Think a Sam Browne type of belt. If that can go with your uniform then it would be good, if not…
  • Always naked unless there is a reason to wear something. Main reasons are if it is cold where I am sleeping or if I am sleeping in a room with others in it.
  • That there is a universal “best” for everyone. A “best” exercise. A “best” diet etc. All the diets out there only moderate the number of calories that you eat. Different people will respond to different diet plans and the best for them will be the one that allows them to feel full and satisfied with the foods that they eat…
  • It is great with hot oatmeal;
  • Your body has a perfected sequence of areas where it likes to store fat. You also will lose fat in the reverse order of your gain. So if you just started to put on weight on say your butt, doing butt exercises will not only tone up the butt area making it look good but the first fat losses will be the last deposited on…
  • Lets consider this in perspective shall we? You are wearing a relatively inexpensive mass produced consumer device that is calibrated to be close for a wide range pf people in your age/gender/weight range. This device uses proxy measurements to determine calorie burn rates. Steps are measured by arm movements and jolts,…
  • What IF or any other of the popular diets do is reduce your calorie intake. Then you lose weight once your intake is less than your expenditure. It really is that simple. The reason why they work is three fold. 1) Different eating regimes work on different people to help reduce cravings, some people like eating one huge…
  • Go play in the snow. Be a kid on a no school/snow day again. Build snowmen, make snow angles, ride a toboggan (then walk back up the hill) . Helps to take a kid and a large dog with you lol. Lots of fun, burns calories from not only the activity but also from keeping warm. Just don't OD on the hot chocolate afterwards.
  • Forget BMI. Forget the numbers on the scale. Do you look and feel good at your present weight? Can you do the physical things you want to do without significant effort? If yes then you are most likely at the right number for you. The numbers are just a rough guide and a way to measure progress. As long as you are happy…
  • True TNP has allergies.
  • I too was a boredom eater, I'd get bored and I'd look in the fridge or cupboard for something to eat just to have something to do. I now substitute another activity instead. It can be anything, exercise, cleaning, doing laundry, going grocery shopping, surfing the net, as long as it does not involve putting calories in my…
  • After 40 years in construction where 4 or 5 AM starts were the norm, I have a lot of trouble sleeping past 5 or 6. Often up at 4. Even before that I was a morning person so this is what suits my biorhythm. Body weight workout while I am waiting for the pool in my complex to open at 6 AM is my favourite.
  • Lots of diet tips include using smaller plates and bowls so this is another example. I am a big fan of doing whatever works.
  • Black, Brown, Grizzly or Polar bear? I am guessing black or browns because if you lived anywhere around polar or grizzlies you would know what to do. Black or brown bears go for it. Run at them and yell and they will run away unless their cubs are near. Grizzly or Polar bears are not at all afraid of humans.
  • As a kid and young adult I was always skinny. (Graduated high school with a BMI of 18, 4 years later after University it was only 19.) I didn't start really gaining weight until I was 30 then it was gradual and not really noticeable. I calculated it many years later and it was just over 30.
  • I use the programmed exercises. It would be a simple software fix to turn off the step counter when I am in a swim exercise. (I get steps on the elliptical as well, in close agreement to the machine's counter.) Could they not simply switch off the step counter when you are doing an exercise that does not have steps?
  • But why count steps when I am in the pool? The "step" count is pretty close to my stroke count. No impact unless it is my arm hitting the water but I have a pretty smooth stroke. I have an Iconic and I like that I no longer have to count laps, I like to swim 3 km or so and counting laps is boring and easy to lose count.…
  • That is over 50 lbs a year. How long did it take you to put on the weight that you want to lose? If like a lot of people the weight crept up a couple lbs a year over a couple of decades, then losing the excess gain in a year or less is doing quite well. Drastic weight losses are not healthy and sustainable, the lb a week…
  • It counts steps when I swim or workout with weights. It counts steps based on arm movements, it would be nice to have a setting in the workouts that would turn off the step counter when you are doing an exercise that does not require steps but does use arm movements.
  • I don't think anyone is saying eat anything anytime, it all comes down to CICO. If you restrict your eating for 16 hours in the day you will not snack during that time. A couple big meals at either end of your 8 hour window with a smaller one in the middle will usually result in less calories than snacking or grazing…
  • I agree that the work is the work, if you are considering productive energy expended, but the increased efficiency of the muscles as they become accustomed to a task results in less energy expended for the same work output.
  • Here is the abstract of that article. You have to click on research findings then look for the link. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/11836452?dopt=Abstract Long-term weight loss and breakfast in subjects in the National Weight Control Registry. Abstract OBJECTIVE: To examine breakfast consumption in subjects…
  • Like the others said, there is little to no evidence that meal timing and frequencies have any impact on weight management. It is all about how many calories you eat and how many you expend. I personally am a big breakfast eater. I’ll sometimes take in half my daily calories and then not eat until supper time. But that is…
  • The trackers also take heart rate into consideration. If you are new to working out your heart rate will be much higher giving you an overly high reading. As your cardio fitness increases you will get a lower indicated burn for the same workout. Also as you get in better overall fitness your body becomes more efficient at…
  • I believe in everything in moderation, even excess. Once in a while you just need to let go. Get rip roaring drunk, binge eat whatever, then forget about it. Let's say you over ate by 5000 calories on a holiday. Normally you eat a 1000 calorie a day deficit, that will put you at a small deficit for the week overall so…
  • The best exercise time and routine is the one that you will actually follow. The best diet scheme is likewise one that you will follow. IF is most likely a pretty benign diet plan. It does not limit what you eat except for the timings that you eat. The timings are not all that drastic, especially on the 8 hr feed and 16…
  • Since the feeling of being satisfied is triggered by a full stomach, I will about once every 6 months fast for a 36 hour period. I’ll have a light supper then fast the entire next day and on the third day have a light breakfast. I might have a small glass of juice on the fasting day but otherwise only water (and coffee…
  • I was hoping that this was going to be another chicken wings on first date thread.
