Grandpa is trying to get stronger. My 17yo son and I were chatting the other night and he was asking how strong I was, especially relative to my previous PRs. (short answer: way less strong). I haven't been able to bench much since June (scooter wipeout) and my squat is in the toilet so it got me to thinking about ratios…

I agree. I wasn't overly concerned...because I knew I had strayed a little from the process (thinking I was still in the margins)...but I still didn't like the trend. Since I like snacks, watching and identifying trends gives me the motivation to make corrections. I locked it down and got back to the 25/50/25 program over…

I thought I had noted this, but I guess not. I was severely undercounting my servings of Kirkland Mixed Nuts. What I thought was 1 serving was between 3-4, so basically from Aug to Nov, I had an extra 500cal/day. Ugh. I was in maintenance mode and didn't know it. Bodyweight was basically plateaued. I think I figured this…

Ok, I see one if you select "week view". Thanks! This will work, but it's not the one I was thinking of. Maybe it was in the Samsung Health app? (which I can't get to get the info from MFP) The one I'm thinking of actually says "you were within X% of your goal for y/z days" or something like that.

Not the pie chart, the one I'm referring to is a bar graph. Vertical bars for each day. A horizontal line showing the calorie limit. Each vertical bar is made up of carbs/protein/fat. It also tells you how close (%) you were to the daily goal, or what % over/under you were.

I'm planning on it (logging for the rest of my life). It fits in well with the gym thing, which I've done for 35 years. Most of that time I've maintained whatever weight/definition I wanted with simple tweaks, things I've picked up over the years. Last fall when those tweaks weren't as effective, I went full bro-tein diet,…

I think I'm going to enjoy Thanksgiving and then get a little leaner. Definition goal is not quite met yet.

Sorry to hear that about your shoulders. Hopefully the surgery fixes things up. I have a SLAP tear in my left shoulder from 10 years ago. I chose to not do surgery but focused on a lot of therapy type exercises, and two years ago when we did the bicep tendon, I discussed it with my surgeon and we decided that since it was…

Thanks! Planning on the Dexascan soon. I did the underwater back in my 30s, got to 12%. I feel like I'm at about the same leanness as then, though a lot less muscle mass. It would be interesting to do both or all three (water, dx, inbody) on the same day, plus calipers. I wish my shoulders were healthy enough to do endless…

I did an "Inbody" bf% test at Vasa... anyone buying it? I personally don't think my abs are popping enough to be in the single digits. (the jury is still out on whether or not I'm going to shave to find out)

Here is a collage from beach photos. Mid August vs last fall.

The last couple of weeks have been productive and Labor Day weekend was fun, actually hit my lowest weight since I was in my early 20s at 191.3 on Saturday. Then we ATE! LOL we spent some time at a family cabin and enjoyed a big sourdough pancake, sausage, bacon, egg, fruit breakfast and other snacks, instantly jumped to…

Still at it. It's been a fun summer, shoulder seems to be to be healing up. Finally able to actually grip the squat bar again, rather than balancing it with my fingertips. My heel also seems to be feeling better as well. 195 has been elusive. I had to tighten things up the last couple weeks. Next push is to get under 190,…

Dang! Nice work!

What did it? Hitting 232 after a lifetime of weight training (16yo to 51yo) and generally healthy eating and always being able to manage weight between 215-225 (the last 20 years) by gentle tweaks to either diet or exercise. Had I only hit 229, I'd still be in that range and generally happy with my strong but slightly…

Interesting graphic (it's popped up a few times plus other similar ones). I think any time you have a food plan, and 25 carb, 25 fat, 50 protein is definitely a plan, there is going to be some potential interference with social situations that include food. But honestly, most of those situations have been fairly easy to…

Finally broke though 195 today. New target is 185, goal remains the same lean look typically found in the 8-10% range. The last few weeks have had a few "free days" while traveling and camping, and the weight drops have all happened after these high calorie days. Interesting. Meeting with a trainer next week for follow up…

Thanks!

Yeah, I have pretty much always avoided the term as a verb only as a noun, referring to what I eat. I like "fuel". I haven't seen that video before, but I have used fuel in the past to describe what I eat. In this case, maybe precision fuel because I actually am having to track and be careful about what I eat to hit…

I agree that one's body tends to reflect one's lifestyle. Mine reflected weight training and M&M eating. I also agree with the prioritization of health/performance over looks. Most of my life I have subscribed to the theory that if you eat mostly clean, the exercise will take care of the snacks and then I wouldn't have to…

Thanks, I'll look it up. I really have no idea at what % I'll hit the "look" I'm after, nor how long I'll stay. I'm not really interested in competing or anything, I just want to see how far I can chase it without getting too crazy. I've never done this before, and had I only hit 229 instead of 232, I'd probably still be…

Thanks! What do you consider a quality method to measure body fat percentage? I haven't really looked into this for about 20 years. We did the calipers back in December, and plan on doing an update as soon as the trainer and I can sync up.

Probably single digit bf to achieve my goal. I use weight because it's an easily trackable target, and I know what my body has looked like and been like at different weights over the last 35 years of pumping iron. I plan on doing one of those dexa scans or whatever the cool kids use as I get close, right now it's just…

Thanks! I appreciate the encouraging words. The precision eating will continue. Weights: These days it's more like "regressive resistance principles". Always pushing for more but sometimes having to do less while navigating various injuries. On my best days I'm at about 75-80% of what I could do in my 30s (I'm 51). On most…

Yeah, it seemed to do me well. I'm excited for the next push, though I'm vacationing in Moab, UT for the next 9 days. Not nearly as much walking...well, actually, that can change out on the trail. There is a gym close to the house that I go to. Other than a couple of the dinners, I'll have a pretty clean diet all week.…

Those are decent numbers, in fact, while not my current maxes, I rarely go higher than the amounts you listed. Heaviest I've handled recently was 275 bench, 405 squat, 385 deads. While not 1RM, I haven't been heavier for a very long time. I did a walk out with 455 the other day when I thought I was feeling strong and it…

Someone taking weights off/putting them on the pegs on the bench while I'm on it. (at our 24, the benches/racks have pegs for the weights, in addition to the weight racks) If it's my buddy taking them off the squat rack, that's one thing, 1) I don't care 2) I can't feel it, but laying on the bench, focused on a rep and you…

Hi fellow 50ish guy! What are your current totals? What is your workout plan?

Back from Brugge/Paris for 10 days. Lost 3 lbs while there and another 2.6 the next day after getting back, to 202.0, making 30 lbs total since I started. Lots of pastries, crepes, waffles and walking while I was there. Plus a few good meals and protein shakes. Did pushups/pullups on 3 occasions, plus a couple short runs…

Bonjour! We are visiting my Son, he is doing study abroad. We are in the 14th. I found everything I was looking for at Fitness Boutique. There are 70 stores throughout France and several in Paris and one about a mile from my apartment.
