  • Yes, it's a lot of info coming at you. The good news is you'll get there! There's a lot of cause and effect with diabetes, the old 'do this, get that'. Be patient with yourself, ask lots of questions, and keep your chin up!
  • A lot of times insulin is just the reality as diabetes is a progressive disease. Taking insulin is not a bad thing and does not reflect badly on a person. I went through a long period where I thought 'if I lose the weight' I can get off insulin. It was my very own insulin shaming because I was not strong enough in my mind.…
  • Everybody's journey is different. You have to find what works for you. Maybe it's all LC or maybe not. Take out of it what you can and keep looking. I'm an 'everything in moderation' person myself with a firm belief in the benefits of a regular, doable exercise program. There is no magic fix for me just keeping up good…
  • As the saying goes 'something's gotta give'. You are doing fine in circumstances where you don't get much choice. Bravo you!
  • You guys keep me inspired. Tracking is an effort for me but gives such a big payoff. Self knowledge is so important.
  • Hope your Halloween went well. We had no trick or treaters but my neighbour and I got things ready anyway with a decorated table at the end of the driveway. No toys this year, expecting low turnout, but went with granola bars, which I can handle. It was fun nonetheless as other neigbours wandered up to chat '(and left with…
  • Wonderful news. Everyone's diabetes is different. Don't shame yourself gor the number. You're doing really well. My doctor wants me to keep my numbers between 7 and 8, which seems astronomically high to me because I was running at 5 to 6. BUT I was getting too many lows, below 4, which are scary and very bad for one s…
  • Old fashioned works just as well. Logging or keeping a diary does not have to be high tech. It really comes down to whatever method suits you. I most often use the diary in FitnessPal but have also used notebooks or kept a bullet journal for all kinds of things including a daily food diary and recording blood sugars.…
  • Yep, we've all had those days. But we're only human so it's going to happen once in a while. The trick is getting back in the driver's seat with it. So bravo you for saying it out loud and dealing with it! I don't think anyone can kick me as hard as I do after those times of boredom or stress or just plain old 'I don't…
  • @rmdodd44 I am so sorry you are going through such a hard time. When a diabetic is ill, it really can throw blood sugars out of whack. My go to is keeping track of my carbs within my range and testing as much as I need to in order to get back on top of it. I also try to stay with simpler, less processed food to avoid…
  • Hi laura_b00, yes, that diagnosis can be a surprise or a wake-up call, as it was for me. I was diagnosed in my early 40's. Best advice, work with your diabetes team, doctor, dietitian and don't despair, life with diabetes is doable. Support groups are great for encouragement and for things like tips on adapting menus or…
  • My blood sugar meter keeps a record so I can check trends. It's useful info as long as I don't obsess about it. If I look after my food intake, my sugars are oksy.
  • Question of the day......Autumn is here and Halloween candy is already in the stores. What's your strategy for handling it? Me, I don't hand out candy but give out Dollar Store items like pencils, erasers, glowsticks, stickers, toy cars, play dough, etc. The kids love it and so do the parents. And I can't eat pencils!
  • Hello and welcome to the group! Diabetes sure does challenge a person. I think it's fair to say most of us struggle with balancing A1C levels, weight, fitness. But I bet also that everyone of us have some absolutely champion tips, suggestions and support for us all. My continuing challenge is eating a balanced diet. My…
  • Hello All, it's a lovely late summer day here in Nova Scotia. I'm thinking of all those who are having not such a lovely day, from the California and Oregon fires to the remembered sadness of 9/11 to the stressors of daily life in trying times. Mental health is so important to how we deal with stress and our health. Take…
  • Have a great time, Jorge!
  • Hi Jorge, so......I 've been away a bit too. My husband had hip replacement surgery, which went well. He is in recovery mode and I'm getting back to normal. Relying on restaurant or hotel food for a few days always throws my BS out of whack. I strive for good decisions but there is a LOT of temptation out there. However, I…
  • Wow, Gabriel, bravo you! That is inspiring. Way to go.
  • Yes, I try to keep an even keel with my insulin dosage and not adjust for those high carbs unexpected meals. My doctor is very firm about avoiding lows, which are dangerous and can have bad long term congnitive effects. So I'll put up with the high for that day and really watch my menu after that. For me it's better to…
  • People often act out of a lot of misinformation and that can be less than supportive. Stick to your diabetes plan and your diabetes team. I always filter 'outside' diabetes advice and consider the source. With family it's difficult because advice can be offered out of real concern and also out of a fear of change. I had to…
  • Hi Jorge, I don't know of any groups specifically but there are lots of groups listed under Community. I saw a few titled Low Carb or similar to that and did think you might be interested in having a look at them. No hatm in looking. Re your question on duplicate posts, sorry, I dont have a clue how to remove it yet. I'll…
  • I do have a Premium su subscription, Jorge. I don't download a whole lot of programs. MyFitnessPal covers pretty much everything I could want except blood sugar tracking. It offers many ways to view your nutrients ie heart smart, low carb, net carb etc. Also has a lot of helpful articles to read along.with recipes etc. I…
  • SparkPeople is free, also. I've heard of an app called My Diabetes which I want to check out. Tracking blood sugars would be useful, I think. I have no idea what it does or does not include. My wish list for any app of this type would be free, food diary, extensive food database, recipes and recipe building and security if…
  • Hi Nancy, you have been on quite a journey and I admire your resolve very much. It's not easy but you are all in. Every person is different but many of our challenges are the same. Chocolate does spring to mind! As a person who likes sweets very much, I understand the challenge. I can be very susceptible to the 'pantry…

  • I exercise almost every day and try to stay generally active as well eg gardening, etc. It is a good habit that was very hard to make but I'm glad stuck with it. I am lucky in that my husband is the most supportive man. He helps with the cooking and encourages me all the way.
  • Oh, Jorge, me too, if I could only have known then what I do now. Sadly, we can't go backwards but we can go onwards and try to make our best decisions now. Somebody, I don't know who, said that life is squandered on the young. I always thought that person had to be living with a lot of regret. I don't want to be the…
  • Hi! Well, it's another day. Good thing, as I messed up yesterday's food diary logging. So, I am logging it today. My brain which says log your diary and my internal me who says throw it out the window are two opposing forces. The angel on my shoulder says perfection is a journey not a destination. I'll try to listen to…

  • Hi Val, I sure don't want to lose any toes either! I exercise most days, about half an hour, to keep in the habit and maintain balance and mobility. It's the old 'use it or lose it!'strategy. I do hope your foot is better.

  • Hi, Gentyl, I really understand what you are saying about food and family. There are ways around it. Make recipes that you like, that work for your food plan. For 'diabetic' recipes, I just drop the word 'diabetic ' from the description for family members. Also many 'regular' recipes come with nutritional breakdown or can…

  • Hi Jorge, how are you? Hope you are well. I've been a diabetic for 20+ years now. It's a journey where you never stop learning about yourself and how you and your diabetes get along. I am back to reviewing my diabetic guidelines by way of a refresher. I am well and my doctor is happy with me but I can certainly get a…
