  • Congrats to you for thinking ahead. A lot of people think of this a week before the event and they get frustrated when no one can tell them the secret to magically melting off the pounds. The tools here are great for holding yourself accountable, and the forums have very supportive people who have been there. You can do…
  • I gotta look into it, I do low carb and I did like oatmeal but I've given up all grains. An alternative with almond flour & things like chia seeds would be a nice treat on those cold winter mornings when I miss my oatmeal. As for getting bored with eggs, I hear that. When I started low carb I ate eggs most days and got…
  • lol why not? I changed the labels and categories for my meals: I have meal 1, meal 2, snacks, and coffee. I would probably put a cocktail as a snack, though.
  • You have to watch the studies, because often they know what results they're going for when they design them. For example, they'll compare a plant-based diet to a meat-eating diet and declare plant-based is healthier; the problem is they're not comparing a health-conscious plant-based to a health-conscious meat based diet…
  • Sugar-- well, added sugars (eating fruits/veggies/or unsweetened dairy is okay if they have a moderate to low glycemic index). Grains-- bread products, pasta, corn, rice, oatmeal, cereals, etc. etc. anything with flour, etc. Starchy veggies & fruits -- potatoes, bananas, etc. I gave these up because I'm diabetic and they…
  • After about 3 days of eating lower protein than normal I was very hungry for protein. So today I ate one meal w/lots of protein: 12 oz chuck steak, pan-fried in cast iron w/some ghee. That's a tsp. of butter melted on top. Garden salad: mixed lettuce, grape tomatoes, cucumbers, black olives. 2 soft-boiled eggs.
  • Generally I just use other herbs and spices to bring in the flavor without the salt. Just try to avoid the pre-blended ones like 'taco mix' or 'cajun mix' or whatever, a lot of those will include salt. Buy them fresh, or buy plain ones dried and make your own blends up.
  • I eat very low carbs (under 20 g. per day), I think everyone has to find their sweet spot. There are people who can eat a lot of carbs without trouble; a lot of these people just don't believe carbs can give other people sooooo many problems. There are people who even a moderate to low amount of carbs causes inflammation,…
  • Low-carb pizza: "carnivore" style crust recipe from Chris Cooking Nashville recipe (YouTube) My homemade tomato sauce Shredded mozzarella, browned sausage, sliced sweet peppers & black olives. I ate half of this 12" pie, only 13 g. of carbs total for 4 slices :p
  • Hi. I grew up in Bklyn (left NY in my late 20s). Had a lot of family out on the Island. As a night owl, I struggled with nighttime mindless eating, grazing, picking, binging, etc... name it. I think finding a way of eating that your body finds satiating and your mind finds satisfying is important or it's never gonna be…
  • Well summer was brutal, and even into Sept. we had high 90s. But October has cleared it up thankfully and it's been beautiful in the 70s/60s. My inflammation has been lower too, I've barely taken any NAISDs these past few weeks, or even Tylenol. Because of all this I started taking the dog on longer walks down the trails…
  • Hi & Welcome. I have sarcoidosis, pretty much ravaged my body by the time they found it, and then the steroids they use as treatment took its toll and I was a mess for quite a few yrs. Physical therapy & diet have been two of the main helps in coming back. There was a time I was bedridden and stuck in a wheelchair, and I'm…
  • Just one meal today, still not hungry after yesterday's 2 big meals. Air fried pork chop, asparagus, & cauliflower puree w/parmesan.
  • Hi & Welcome. It definitely works-- but like any other tool, you gotta work it lol. But the tools for keeping track of stuff are very helpful and the forums are full of supportive people.
  • Hi & Welcome. I'm doing low carb/high fat, most similar to 'dirty, lazy keto'. I'm 54. I like to cook as well. Mostly I just eat meat & veggies, eggs & butter, with some fruit, nuts, and occasionally unsweetened dairy thrown in. I also like to cook, and once in a while when the regular daily foods feel a little boring and…
  • Hi & Welcome, this can be a great tool. Sounds like you're off to a great start with a trainer! Congrats!
  • Never too late as long as you're still alive & kicking. I'm 54 and I'm doing better now than I have in 20+ yrs health wise. Wish I would've done it then but it took me a while to find what worked for me. No point in looking back, onward & upward.
  • Hello; how are you doing IF? Are you doing alternate-day fasting, or a couple of full day fasts per week, or time-restricted eating? I can't do alternate-day or full-day fasting yet as I am still on one diabetic medication and my blood sugar drops too low if I don't eat at least once per day. I do time-restricted eating…
  • The Dr. & nutritionist at his office had me on that too. That didn't work for me either, too many carbs spike my blood sugar regardless of the source, I was getting nowhere with it... except cravings, lol. Because having a slice of whole bread or a potato or a bowl of oatmeal just stirred my appetite and never felt like…
  • After barely eating yesterday due to upset stomach, I was pretty hungry this morning and started eating as soon as my eating window opened. Scrambled eggs, bacon, and a quick almond flour microwavable bread w/a light smear of cream cheese: Evening meal: Taco bowls. I browned & seasoned the meat then added a bit of tomato…
  • I advise starting where you're comfortable and tweaking as you go to help better suit your preferences and health needs. Mine kept changing lol: 50% carb/ 30% protein/20% fat -- is where I started 40% carb/ 35% protein/25% fat 35% carb/ 35% protein/30% fat 30% carb/ 40% protein/30% fat 15% carb/ 45% protein/30% fat 15%…
  • Hi. I do low carb/high fat. I'm 54, and I'm type 2 diabetic for the last couple of decades, though I am on the verge of reversing it, I've gotten off almost all of the meds. For me low carb didn't click until I also upped my fat intake. I found it really hard to do low carb without the high fat but I still worried about…
  • Hi & Welcome. MFP can be great for tracking and the forums are pretty supportive. My advice to anyone is find a starting place and tweak as you go. For me, I kept lowering carbs until I landed in very low carb/high fat territory. That was the key for me to find something sustainable, healthy, and effective for losing…
  • Mmmhmmm. Again, disagree. I do think the low-fat craze played a role. I've read articles, studies, seen documentaries, etc. on all sides of the spectrum, from those advocating strict vegan diets to those advocating strict carnivore diets. I've read the ADA and the AHA diets and discussed them with a nutritionist and worked…
  • Thanks for the input, it's useful. I've been trying different ways to be more consistent and effective. Mostly I am trying to get into the habit of sitting down at the end of the night when I have my coffee and play around on the internet. I log for the next day so I can make sure I eat enough, not too much or too little,…
  • lol the air is getting fattening lol. Sorry, hope they resolve the issue. I haven't had this on my food diary but in viewing other people's I share with I only see the final calories, not the foods.
  • Of course eating less keeps weight down. Did I say otherwise? You're starting to confuse me, you keep going off on other tangents and miss my points entirely. I think you're assuming I'm trying to rid the world of carb-eaters. I can assure you, that is not what I ever said or even implied. What have I said in a nutshell: -…
  • Boiled potatoes have the same affect on me as potatoes in any other form-- they awaken the beast. When someone is a carb-addict, or a diabetic, or insulin-resistant, or has hyperinsulinemia, etc. -- this can be especially problematic. On St. Patrick's Day I used to help cook a big dinner for a lot of people, the potatoes…
  • Low carb crispy chicken A 6-oz serving is about 5 grams of carbs, and about 550 calories. Get chicken breasts & cut them into chunks (for nuggets), strips (for tenders/fingers), or cut them into cutlets (not too thick). In one bowl mix egg & a little splash of milk or cream. I use about 4-5 eggs for 2 lbs of chicken…
  • Need more info. Like, what foods are you addicted to? I assume you wanna avoid those in any recipes. Are you on any kind of special diet? (Low carb, low fat, balanced w/whole grains, vegetarian, etc.)? Also, what do you consider tasty? Some people think a salad is tasty, some don't. Some people think steak is tasty, some…
