  • I'm much better now thanks. I hope your wife is doing well.
  • It was going great! Then I tested positive for Covid. So, living in an apartment building, I had to isolate for 10 days. Then once that was over, I still had trouble catching my breath. But, out of 30 days, I managed 20.
  • I kinda abandoned the whole thing. I decided, like you said it would become snacks, and that can be a dangerous road to go down. I have changed the times I have my meals, added a little more protein, and that seems to be working out. No more pancreatitis attacks(knock on wood). I don't need that evening snack, and my fat…
  • Well Saturday was day #10 of the September challenge for the Ottawa Heart Intitute. And wouldn't you know it, while on my bike, going downhill, trying to avoid a pedestrian, I fell again. Into a rose bush that only had it's thorns left. The little girl that I tried to avoid came to offer help, and when she really couldn't…
  • Road rash is all gone. I was actually out on my bike again yesterday for 15+K. I am eating more veggies than I did before. Instead of chips I have snack size popcorn, or some veggies with hummus. And a piece of fruit. I'm back to making my weekly meal plan that really helps with both groceries and impulse eating. I'm…
  • Hi Marilyn. I started on your chat room, but \I have to say, all those 'inspirational' pictures got too much for me. I would much rather see other peoples stories and successes(or failures).
  • Sorry to hear about your hospitalization. Was it due to pancreatitis? I too hope you got to see a gastroenterologist. I had to read up on alpha-gal syndrome. I don't eat much beef or pork. My main diet consists of chicken and fish, and occasionally a burger(but not often). I hope you get some help with your pancreatitis…
  • Hmm, just noticed the grammatical errors. But, I hope you understand what I was trying to say. I see a pancreas specialist rather than a gastroenterologist.
  • I feel your pain. In years past, I had a simple ERCP that went wrong. It infected my pancreas and I lost half of it due to necrotizing pancreatitis. Because of this, I have chronic pancreatitis as well as type 2 diabetes. I joke that I take so many pills, I rattle now. Oh, and I am down to 10% of a working pancreas. I…
  • Good for you and your numbers. |Yes, my cardiologist said, and studies show, that your body makes 80% of your cholesterol, the other 20% is from diet. And, the only way to get the 'good' cholesterol is through exercise. I've had to give up most red meat because it gives me pancreatitis attacks. I can eat extra lean…
  • I say bring the concerns up. I am not sure the doctor/whatever needs to bring up every side-effect. Telling people about a side-effect might make you hyperaware of tendencies to GI distress or sleeplessness. They can always ask at the next appointment to see if the med was problematic in some way. I know statins can be…
  • WHAT would you do? My sister in law is seeing a nurse practitioner, because she can't find a family doctor. That seems to be a problem for everyone. Anyway, regarding her diabetes, the nurse prescribed OZempic, and stopped her mealtime insulin. Once a week, only test before bedtime. So, I thought, well, this could be good…
  • I thank my lucky stars that I live where I do. After all those months in hospital, and subsequent visits and tests, post operative care, I never paid a cent. And now that I'm 65, most of my meds are covered by the provincial government. After a $100 annual deductible, I pay $4.00 per prescription. The only one the…
  • Hi. I'm a Canadian diabetic, so our morning finger pricks are different, but our A1C is measured the same. I do the best I can food wise. I recently realized that I am not a binge eater, but rather an uncontrolled eater. There is a difference, and it is easy to control when I think about the consequences. I am a little…
  • Lots of great information to look at. Thanks so much.
  • Thanks everyone for your insights and comments. I have counted calories and carbs since the cows came home, I am an old pro at that. Unfortunately, when I binge, all that good work goes out the window. So, my doctor isn't worried about my weight. I don't like where I'm at, but she just wants me to make sure my blood…
  • Being diabetic, I can't really fast, I have to have regular meals to keep my blood sugar stable. I have been experimenting with eating each meal a bit later in order to curb the evening pig fest.
  • Thanks so much for the insights. I do only eat chicken and fish. The occasional burger because like I said, I had issues with too much fat. You say 500g of produce a day. Could you give me an example of what you would have in a day, produce wise? I track calories, carbs, fib, fat and protein. Any other macros I should be…
  • Well, it was an interesting experiment. It was easy to use. The readings were not always what I expected and I had to double check with a finger prick. But, it was mostly pretty accurate. But, I did get a rash from the adhesive. And, I was shocked by how much plastic it used in the applicator. Also, all the print media in…
  • I'm a junk food junky as well. I'm pretty sure if you start by giving up junk food, you'll see a difference. When I say junk food, I mean chips and chocolate bars, licorice, that kind of thing. I don't eat out much at all. Once a month I may go out for a burger. Since it's very hard to know what is in a restaurant meal,…
  • I have a weekly meal planner that I got from a dietician years ago. I keep it on my fridge. It starts on Thursday, because that's when the flyers come out every week. I start by planning my suppers. Each supper is doubled and the leftovers are used for lunch. Breakfasts are pretty much the same. Shredded wheat or…
  • Thank you, and the same to you.
  • Wow, I think our stories are probably very similar. I had a gallstone removed, doctor nicked my pancreas. 4 1/2 months in hospital with necrotizing pancreatitis. Left with 50% of my pancreas. It took a bit longer, but about 1 year later, many bouts of pancreatitis, and I become diabetic.
  • My last check-up with my doctor was great! A1C 6.7%, cholesterol 1.8 just like the cardiologist wants. Since 80% of cholesterol is made by your body, well, it is what it is. Exercise will increase the HDL, which is the good kind. She reduced my insulin ratio so I'm pretty pleased with that. The fat issue, is different for…
  • Oh, and I do test 15 minutes after correcting a low to make sure I'm back in range. Then I'll either have my meal, or a snack. I sometimes feel like I'm starting over because of this heart disease, so, I am paying closer attention to everything I put in my mouth.
  • I was using the Diabetes CAnada diet recommendations. Pretty much the same as the American Diabetes Association. It is a little difficult to get used to, but it can be done. If you eat more veggies instead of simple carbs, the carbs per meal will fall into the recommended amounts. But, it takes time to really get the hang…
  • Thanks everyone for your responses. I don't usually treat a low unless it's below 3(48). That's when I would use a glucose tablet. But, if I start to get too many lows, my doctor has said to change the ratio of insulin I use. And I like the idea of just using some cheese if it's too low. If it's above 3 I usually just have…
  • Hmmm. that's very interesting. I like to get Montreal style smoked turkey breast from the deli, which is processed, but I've never seen the jump in blood sugar. But, I do take insulin based on how many carbs in my meals. But, I'm going to watch for that. You've made me curious.
  • I was advised, like others here, a little carb and protein before exercise. Also, exercise 1 hour after eating. That is when your blood sugar peaks and is starting to come down. So, following that, your blood sugar will be lower after exercise. I have done this for 3 weeks now, and find this to be true. So far, and for me.
  • I believe that the person advocating that all diabetes meds suck, specifically insulin, has been banned now. He professed to be a doctor. More like a quack.
