It is my understanding that the problem with unsaturated fats is that they oxidize (go rancid) much more easily than saturated fats do. Oxidized unsaturated fats aren't metabolized right and clog up the works, basically. Fresh unsaturated fats, like in fresh avocados, are awesome. Old canola oil from your pantry is yuck.

I would love all you "macros don't matter and wheat is awesome" folks to try eating nothing but your BMR in bread for 60 days. That ought to wake you up. You probably wouldn't last 7. Paleo is meat, veggies, fruits, nuts. Dairy if you want. It's hundreds of whole foods from the perimeter of the grocery store that…

When I started Paleo, I discovered that I was gluten intolerant, because I felt so, so much better! I don't eat wheat anymore. I eat other grains on rare occasions. I feel ten years younger. There's really no need to argue about it (or base opinions on NOT having read the book, that's just odd). Just try it for 30 days,…

^^ Exactly this. We go to the Farmer's market down the street on Saturdays, and get a week's worth of veggies for $40. A pint of roma tomatoes is $1. Now, if you are trying to eat clean, or high-protein, then meat is a big expense. Organic meat costs double or quadruple what factory-farm meat costs, and I won't eat Chinese…

I always eat at least 1200 unless I have the flu or something. If I am having trouble eating enough for a few days, that seems to mean that my metabolism is slowing down to match what I eat, which is not good. It means I need to get some exercise to get things moving again, and have a cheat day to remind my body that…

If you want kids, the between 25 and 30 is good. Otherwise, whenever you are ready but not before 25. A person's personality doesn't settle down till then.

I'm on Paleo, so properly PB is a no because it is a legume. But, it has a very low glycemic index, so I do eat peanuts and PB on occasion. Mostly for dipping apples in.

I have six kids. 11yo Girl is overweight and loves carbs and little else. 6yo boy is naturally slender and healthy, for now. 4yo boy was seriously overweight, and bloodwork showed him to be prediabetic. My Fiance's three daughters (11, 5, and 5) are very slender and we have to make deals with them to get them to eat. When…

The entire opening love story in "UP". The opening scene in the newest "Star Trek" movie, where baby Kirk is born as his dad sacrifices himself to save everyone...

That's interesting. I love yoga, running, and mountain hiking. And weights. I remember one time I went mountain hiking, and I worked out so hard that I couldn't move for two days. I also fell on the trail and walked back to the car with blood all over my legs, grinning. But that doesn't matter, because I loved doing it,…

Like most things on MFP, some people hate them, and some people love them. However, this insistence that anyone who doesn't want to do this one exact exercise is a useless slacker, is just elitist trolling that should have been left behind in the high school gym locker under the dirty socks where it belongs. .

I won't do them. I'm uncoordinated and also I get blood-pressure triggered migraines. I think all the jumping and leaping up from the floor would quickly result in a migraine and also a broken ankle. I'll stick to yoga, running, and mountain hiking. Much smoother.

I TOTALLY used to do this too. It was beyond self-control. I found myself mostly cured when I went on a low-glycemic diet. It stopped the insulin spikes that threw my appetite out of control. I use the Paleo diet now, which is high-protein and low-glycemic. I think it is worth a try for anyone with carb addiction. Food…

I don't think it was a red flag. You gave him a vague No, and he asked to be let off the hook. The right person does not always come along when you are ready, or when it is convenient. Have faith in yourself that you can manage your health, and date a possibly great guy, at the same time.

The problem is, open-minded people do not see it that way. They really don't; it's one of the really rock-solid differences between the camps. Liberal people really do perceive conservatives as intolerant, and yes, it gets put in the same general category as racism. So, conservatives feel pressured to change social views…

You... think that day will ever come? I guess maybe if there was a zombie apocalypse....

Gentlepeople, the question "Why get married in the first place?" has been answered about ten times in this thread. To paraphrase: for almost exactly the same reasons that monogamous people do.
-
Ok, I really *really* don't want to pick on you; and I understand that you are live-and-let-live. But.... when religious people say things like that, it's scary. Because what I hear is "We would stone you, except that there is a local law against it. So we won't beat you to death with stones for wearing cotton with…

Well, in my case, you keep them both! :D But yeah, if you don't think these issues through carefully *in advance*, you are going to have some very bad results.

^^^^^ This guy is why we can't have nice things. It's all about CONSENTING ADULTS, dude. Kids and dogs will never be consenting adults. Ever. It's about getting Government OUT of the bedroom. And you had the right to marry the CONSENTING ADULT you loved, because that person was conveniently of the opposite gender.…

Saying "I don't want an open marriage for myself" is totally cool. Saying "I think that open marriage is bad for society" is annoying, but fine to debate endlessly about. Saying "Open marriage is bad for everyone and there's something wrong with you" is busted judgmental crap.

There is always value in knowing, how the other side sees you....

I totally understand - but every subculture needs a word for "them that aren't us". It's like "muggle". Or "square" if you're a hippy. Vanilla is a delightful flavor, made from the seedpod of a beautiful tropical orchid. A world without vanilla would suck.

Oh goodness! Most of us in the poly community know that sex is actually important to happiness and fulfillment; and we know that it is unfair to ask one person to be everything we need for the rest of our life, no matter how in love and committed you are. We actually take this stuff really seriously. We study what works…
-
"I personally do NOT believe you can have that level of commitment to more than one person at a time." I accept that you can't. That's ok. Some people are just naturally monogamous. But I, actually, CAN. And it's awesome.

Perhaps you are conflating love and intimacy? Love means "I see you who for who you really are, and I accept all the wonderful and crappy things about you just as you are, and you bring me joy." I certainly know my fiance better than I know one of those struck-by-lightning-loves (which are rare, too). We are intellectually…
-
Yes, because you are saying that "love is finite". I can be in love with multiple adults. I can love multiple children as their parent. I can love people I just met who have sparkly happy souls and love them for the rest of my life even if I never see them again. I can love X deeply and truly, and love Y deeply and truly,…

Why?

I understand your point, but our vows will not include a vow of fidelity. I think we are planning to "Love, Honor, and Cherish." We are having a secular ceremony. I am also thinking that vows can be set aside if both parties wholeheartedly agree to; and I don't consider god to be a literal participant in the vows, because…

^^^^^ That, yes.
