  • It may help to focus on not drinking for a week or two and then work on the diet.
  • I can gain 5 lbs overnight (water weight) from overindulgence in salty or alcoholic beverages. After a day or two it goes down. If you don’t weigh regularly you may have not gained 7 lbs. I know some people don’t weigh daily but I do so I know while some days I may be up a pound or 5 on the scale that its just a normal…
  • My food scale has a ml mode
  • Where did you get 1700 as maintenance calories? I am a 53 year old woman, and at 137 lbs 5’5” lost weight eating around 1700 (131 lbs currently) Desk job and lift weights 3x per week and CrossFit 1 day a week. I think your maintenance should be higher. Building muscle and losing fat simultaneously is slow going unless you…
  • @Libby283 - everyone is different - 1500-1700 is what I eat to lose.... OP, sometimes it takes more than a week to see a loss. And yes it could be fluid/water weight. I weigh daily because I know I tend to fluctuate, so daily shows me the average trend during time. Also, are you weighing - not measuring (cups, spoons) but…
  • You will still lose weight increasing your calories some, just not as fast. Would you rather lose more slowly and not feel like you are starving, or lose faster and be hungry all the time?
  • Try this calculator: http://scoobysworkshop.com/calorie-calculator/ I think it gives a more reasonable calorie goal - I used their recommendation instead of the one here and I have lost weight.
  • What is your current weight/height? Did you set to lose 2 lbs/week? You could possibly eat more calories and still lose just more slowly. I think so many people set their calories too low to be sustainable then give up on losing weight because they are starving...better to lose more slowly and keep losing.
  • Can't cook and have to eat out as in don't know how to cook, or can't cook as in I have no access to a stove/microwave/refrigerator?
  • For a little over a year I have been doing a group class sort of like you describe - Knockout Fitness - which has circuits and boxing 2 X per week for an hour, and I do Stronglifts 3 X per week - but not on the same days. I could not lift heavy when I started. I improvised the moves with dumbbells and the smaller weighted…
  • "....I've don't have and have never had a weight problem." (quoting OP) So your belief and agreement with Anderson is not based on personal experience of having to figure out how to lose weight - you never had to personally rely on an internal dialogue or counting calories to help you lose weight. In a way that's like…
  • Cottage cheese with fruit mixed in - blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, etc.
  • 1500 may be on the lowish side for you - what is your height/weight and how many pounds/week to lose did you set? I am a 51 year old female, 5'5", current weight around 129 and eat an average of 1600 per day and am losing. It may be better to up your calories and lose slower - it is more sustainable. I think too many…
  • I use gloves and have no problems. These are the ones I use - they have little rubber-like dots on the palms that really help me grip. I had ones with a soft leather palm before, these are so much better. Not sure if they make a men's version, but I would think the women's black in this would work for a man, just get the…
  • I had a hard time increasing by 5 lbs. on my bench and overhead press so I bought a pair of 1.25 plates from Amazon so I could increase the weight by 2.5 lbs since my gym's smallest plates are 2.5 (5 lb total). My increases have slowed tremendously since I started eating in deficit again (trying to lose some body fat).
  • Just wondering how you count your macros without logging the calories on here to get the macros?
  • If it makes you feel better, I ate 5 slices of hand tossed Hawaiian pizza last Thursday night for dinner - made me almost double my goal for the day. My weight today is over a pound less than before the pizza. And I am a 51 yr. old female who doesn't have much weight to lose (about 5 lbs. to go now - started at 141, 129.6…
  • For what it's worth - I am your height, started out at 141, and am down to 134.2 in about 6 weeks. My calories are set at 1700 - some days I eat less, occasionally a little more. I lift weights 3X per week and take a 1 hour cardio class(combo circuit training/boxing) 2X week. I don't "eat back" my exercise. You could…
  • I think the point the OP is making is that if you have not had issues with pain during ovulation and then suddenly do you should have it checked out. I for one have never had painful ovulation. Never had any issues with my period at all (cramps, heavy bleeding, irregularity, none of that) until I was 40. When I started…
  • I think the problem is not the calorie counting per se, but the 1200 calories, which I do agree is not sustainable for the average person. At your current weight, you could eat at least 1800 and still lose. I am 51 years old, my 5'5", and my starting weight was 140. I am down to 135 after about 6 weeks, and my limit is set…
  • Maybe try upping the calories to 2700 - you would lose more slowly but maybe not be as low energy.
  • Are you trying to cut/lose fat? Your profile picture doesn't look like you have a lot to lose. How much have you cut back your calories? You may need to increase them to a level that sustains your energy while losing fat more slowly.
  • Crash diets rarely produce sustainable weight loss. Learning to eat appropriate portions for life is how you lose and keep weight off. I am a 51 year old female, 5'5", eat between 1500 - 1700 calories/day and have lost from 141 to 135 in about 6 weeks. Haven't starved myself, and I will be able to eat like this the rest of…
  • 1700 should be a good. I am 5'5", 139 lb. 51 year old female and am losing on 1700 calories/day....
  • I know what you mean - when I started lifting it took me forever to work up the courage (not to mention the strength) to bench press. I started by using lighter dumbbells gradually increasing weight until I could bench the barbell. One thing that helped me was finding a time to go to the gym when it's not very busy.…
  • Also, the 2nd day out is the worst. Not sure how often you plan on going to the gym and what types of exercise you are doing there, but maybe in the beginning either go every 3 days or do a bit less exercise than you did the first time if you want to go more often.
  • A little over a year ago I started going to Knockout classes (a combo boxing/circuit training class) at the gym after years of little to no exercise. By the 2nd day after my first class I could barely climb the stairs at home. But the more I kept going the less sore I was. Now I may be a little sore depending what else I…
  • I have been doing Stronglifts 5X5 for a little while now. Let me preface my remarks by saying I started lifting at the age of 50 and I had never lifted nor done much of any exercise. I didn't even attempt to squat with the bar at first, I wasn't strong enough. Luckily my gym has a set of weighted bars that are about half…
  • Here's the take on this question that has been working for me...I lift 3X per week and take an HIIT class 2X per week. http://www.nerdfitness.com/blog/2010/02/01/what-burns-more-calories-cardio-intervals-or-weight-training/
  • My daughter is getting married in June and she and with the help of her sisters picked a dress that all the bridesmaids (6 of them) will be wearing from a bridal shop, and they are going for fittings and or measurements (if the dress is not in stock in their size) since they have to be ordered and the bridal shop wants…
