  • Awesome success story and exactly why I push swimming for inactive kids who enjoy it. Mine started swimming very late, oldest learned to swim (literally Red Cross 1) at 11, started winter swimming at 13, and will be competing at the Canadian Olympic Trials in April. It's amazing what finding the right sport can do for a…
  • How many calories is your goal, and what is your weight, height? That will determine your safe deficit range. http://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/10257474/starting-out-restarting-basics-inside#latest
  • I wrote a post about the basics here: http://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/10257474/starting-out-restarting-basics-inside#latest My fitness pal and calorie counting really does work when you do it right. Good luck!

  • Take 2: my kids would love if I made any of those. Speaking of my kids if anyone has an excellent carrot cake muffin recipe please share. If I substitute applesauce for the oil I'm sure I can justify it as a good in-competition snack
  • Oh I need these recipes Seriously, typed a long reply and it posted the first 5 words? Like typing on a phone while working out is easy?
  • You read people's posts with the tone you hear in your head. That's on you, not on them. If you let comments as neutral as these be a discouragement, then you're in trouble when you hit the larger stumbling blocks that almost inevitably appear along anyone's weight loss journey. You might find that changing has to come…
  • If she enjoys swimming as you say, put her into a youth development program through a local swim club, or put her in lifeguard club. With lifeguard club, it's fun, it encourages getting fit, and it builds skills that will allow her to certify as a lifeguard and learn CPR etc. Surely the Ex would be on board with that!…
  • You have to be 18 to use myfitnesspal, and 12 is pretty darn young to be counting calories. Activities, activities, activities, and include cooking healthy meals together, too. Teach a life skill while improving nutrition and that may help when she's at her dad's, too.
  • Just wanted to say that being a good student does not preclude being an athlete. In fact, sports can actually help them in school. They learn great time management, focus, etc. Also, she would seriously be better off developing some activities that she will enjoy for the rest of her life, to make a habit of, and walking on…
  • I would suggest two things... one, get active with her (if she's willing to do stuff with you). Go take squash / handball / badminton / tennis / etc lessons together or her alone. Try to find something she enjoys and then maybe get her into a group where she will make friends and want to go on her own. Don't make it about…
  • I take 5HTP in a blend with melatonin and L-theanine every night to help me sleep, and I always feel less anxious the next day when I'm taking it.
  • It's not for me. I wouldn't want to live that way the rest of my life, and needed to learn to moderate the things that I do like, and learn to live within what are now my maintenance calories eating what I like.
  • Christine, you're running an 1160 calorie daily deficit? :o So you're losing 10 pounds per month?
  • You can use the barcode reader, but it's always good to verify the calories on the entry with the calories on the packaging. Also, you should be using a food scale in conjunction with the scanner.
  • Most doctors have a very basic understanding of nutrition and weight loss. They are just as susceptible as anyone else when it comes to 'bro science', etc. If it were me, as I said upthread, I would eat at maintenance for now (calculated by MFP), use a food scale, eat lots of veggies, some fruits, lots of protein, smaller…
  • You appear to be severely under-eating. This week you had a string of three days... 1000 one day, 500 the next, and 654 the third.
  • Yes, corn tortillas are usually lower calorie, as long as they aren't deep fried.
  • Try to avoid anything deep fried, including the tortilla chips. You should be able to fit in 2 T of sour cream if you keep the rest reasonable.
  • Nowhere did I say that Jenny Craig is not a diet. I also didn't say that everyone that I know who has dieted has maintained. What I did say: Of the people who I know that have successfully maintained, none of them lost their weight doing Jenny Craig.
  • Some people need to log at the beginning to learn how to appropriately fuel their body. Some don't. Some need to log forever. Some don't.
  • I know several people who have dieted and maintained for years. I know zero people who lost on Jenny Craig and maintained.
  • I have several family members who have done Jenny Craig and all regained their weight almost immediately. It did not teach them to log accurately and make good choices on their own.
  • Not a nutritionist. If anything, a registered dietician. Is this a GP or an obstetrician? I would be hesitant to cut below maintenance calories during pregnancy. Maybe calculate your maintenance calories based on not being pregnant, and then eat at that. That will actually be a deficit in light of the pregnancy. I think…
  • @raeezu3 just in case you missed it, that was a clickable link I posted above. It should answer all your questions.
  • Pretty much all of that is already accounted for in your activity level. You may find that you are 'lightly active' based on your description. You could start there, and see if you maintain or lose as expected.
  • Thanks, ladies! So many posts asking about miracle pills tonight, makes me sad :(
  • They get more from having more muscle mass and being more active, not from some magical 'high metabolism'. This whole post reminds me of a video I used to play for my kids when they were little... Kids for Character featuring Tom Selleck... Lambchop performs 'It's Not Fair' as one of the foundations of character. The 6…
  • Fantastic summary by @diannethegeek as always. The only thing I would add would be to make sure you have your activity level set correctly. Do not include exercise in this. Most people are sedentary.
