The way you use those terms is transposed from the norm. What you are calling addiction, most people describe as dependence. What you call dependence, most people describe as addiction. I posted these definitions earlier, but the following thread has more substantial definitions from more appropriate sources. • addiction –…

I realized my previous comment might have came off with an unintended tone. I was in a bit of a hurry. I just wanted to emphasize and acknowledge that there are likely other causes and other aspects of the problem besides addiction for different people. In other words, I don't believe that addiction is the only thing…

Thanks for the context. I think a lot of that falls along political lines with regard to responsibilities of Government vs Freedom of the people.

This statement is kind of dear to me because it always seems to be called out as a motivation for claiming an addiction. To be excused means to be relieved of consequences. What was the nature of the call in? In this thread, the question is asked to determine reasons or causes. Saying one is addicted does not excuse them…

To be clear I only suggested it as an answer in some cases. I think the answer as to why some and not others falls to genetics.

I would say that it could be 2 or 3 parts. Not all addictions carry a physical dependency. However, they do trigger a physiological response which can be abnormal in the addict. Other part is psychological as described earlier. Keep in mind that my definitions for dependency and addiction are reversed from stef's as that…

I see. That is opposite of the conventional use of the term "dependency". Perhaps that is the root of our disagreement on addiction. ETA: I pretty much agree with everything elseelse.

Channeling my best Jim Mora: “ What’s that? Ah — Consensus? Don’t talk about — Consensus? You kidding me? Consensus? I just hope we can agree on a damned word! "

So were you addicted to cigarettes or not? Am I understanding you correctly that you consider dependency and addiction as two separate things, but you think that people can become dependent on certain foods but not addicted to them? That would be a new perspective to me and I'd like to hear more of your thoughts on it if…

I'm curious. Wouldn't food be anything which contains nutrients which our bodies can exploit?
-
You say that you are not going to debate addiction anymore yet you can't seem to avoid it. It's kind of comical. Yes let's get back to there. I suggested compulsion/addiction/some-other-stuff as one possible reason. Do you assert that none of those words are a viable reason for overeating? If so, why?
-
I'm not the biggest fan of the term myself, but other terms lack the universal understanding of the situation implied by the term. I tried to avoid the terminology debate in my OP in this thread by offering several alternative terms. I understand though that for many the term is unforgivable.
-
My intention in this thread is not to convince anybody of the veracity of food addiction. I just want to represent one point of view from that perspective as I feel it is relevant to the OP. Weight loss is a very broad subject. It is a problem with various causes and numerous ways to come to a solution. The occurrence of…

Funny, I see it as an impetus for change.
-
And I have seen many, many get WLS and gain all of the weight back.

The same reason why many alcoholics and drug addicts don't get treatment. Again, many people with food issues do get treatment. Of course there is a certain stigma to overcome with food addiction which other addiction programs have already overcome. True, but many eventually succumb to those issues and eventually gain some…

1. I know a number of people who have lost their jobs due to weight issues caused by overeating. I almost lost my job because of it. 2. We do not need to overeat in order to survive. 3. You are describing dependency which is not a requirement for addiction. 4. Many do. (In fact, that is what I advocate as evident by a…

There are definitely mental issues which lead to these problems. Many of us here in MFP tend to fly off the handle when the term "addiction " is suggested, but what ever label we throw at it, people have found effective treatment for such situations following typical addiction treatment protocols.
-
People have had similar outlooks on alcoholics for decades (or mellenia), but now it is widely accepted to not be so cut and dry.
-
Ok, but this is somewhat different than what the thread seemed to be about. If you have been able to build a skill set which allows you to be able to eyeball what 30g of marble cheddar looks like, what makes you think others who have struggled for years haven't been able to develop the same skills? Surely many of them have…

Just in case anybody suspects it, it wasn't me.

Ok, I'm still trying to fully understand what you meant by "Sure they get the concept of I need to eat fewer calories but when it comes down to it they have no idea what that truly means...". So for the sake of clarification, you are saying that they miscalculate their caloric needs or the number of calories they should…
-
I understand your belief. I'm saying your explanation of "Lack of knowledge" does not adequately explain the phenomenon. Call it what you want. The approach to a solution is still the same.
-
What does it truly mean if not; determining the calories of current intake and eating less than that; or determining caloric output and eating less than that?
-
True. The same question can be asked about people who lose limbs due to diabetes even though they have been told of the dangers and given ample time to correct it. There are people who have lost jobs because of it. There is no good reason for it. It is a mental malady.
-
But...what if they do? I was overweight, I still am by many standards. I surly know how calories work. I fully understand the concepts of CICO. I also understand the consequences of overeating. I have struggled with weight my entire life. It was necessary for me to learn about these things early on. There are many like me.…
-
I don't know if that is the right terminology (CICO being out of control). I think the way it was phrased in your OP is a little better. That is what I was trying to address with my opinion. Regarding what they think would help them, I think most find help though addressing underlying issues on the mental side of the…

So, you're basically saying people with weight problems do not know lack education on how to maintain?
-
That's fine. Are you saying I lack education or the people I am talking about lack education. What education is lacking?
-
I don't really see how this thread won't end up here anyway, so I'm going to go ahead and throw it out there: In some (or many) cases, people are afflicted with a compulsion/addiction/condition/whatever-term-that-won't-cause-mental-anguish-to-people. I believe that there is both a physical and mental component to this. The…
