I did not mention a Western balanced diet, or recommended processed foods ! Where did you read that?

Not sure how your response is related to the quote. I am sure your response will get many to answer here, as it is surely controversial to state agriculture is what caused disease ! I want to re-iterate my point: Not trying to convince anyone, just to inform.

My intention for posting this study from Stanford, was to give another piece of information to low-carb dieters, so that they can better make a decision. I am concerned at a personal level, that some low-carb dieters are going to extremes that may be unhealthy, as the study quotes from several medical associations.…

You don't like being called "bro"? Wait until you get called "Sir" the first time !

My solution when faced with the same issue: Eat a SMALL portion of the dish, calculating the best you can that it will not get you above your calories. That way, you will be able to eat that delicious dish, not offend the cook, and stay within your target cals ! Of course, you will need to eat something else, since the…

Maybe if you tell us what food is normally served in your meetings, we could figure out healthy alternatives :-)

Agreed there are no revolutionary findings in the study. However, the main point I can derive from the study is that a Low Carb diet gives no advantage in terms of weight loss. So the study is helpful, as it dispels the notion that many have about the "magic pill" of a low carb diet. There is absolutely no need to severely…

Yes, they are not conclusive, mainly because there is not enough data out there. But they did state: "Among the published studies, participant weight loss while using low-carbohydrate diets was principally associated with decreased caloric intake and increased diet duration but not with reduced carbohydrate content. " In…

Please note that the article is a compilation of studies, and thus can't really be biased. Unless we could detect that they picked only studies that corresponded to a particular way of thinking. The authors are from Stanford, which gives the study a lot of credibility in my opinion and they included at the end this…

They seem to think Sunflower Seeds are great for you ! http://www.whfoods.com/genpage.php?tname=foodspice&dbid=57 although I watch out for eating too many, since they are loaded with calories ! http://nutritiondata.self.com/facts/nut-and-seed-products/3167/2

200 calories does not sound to me to be the equivalent of a meal, even if your calorie goal is 1200 a day... I am sure you are not suggesting one can have 3 of those shakes and call it a day I have read a bit on the Slimfast "plan", and they propose for the day: 1) Snacks Pick three nourishing snacks a day – Slim·Fast…

Yes, ^^^ This The extremes are always dangerous, in my opinion. Low Carb or Low Protein diets are extremes. A long term plan for healthy nutrition, should be a Balanced diet, with the right proportion of carbs, protein, fat. The attraction of low carbs and other diets, is that they deliver a simple "magical" and easy way…

Fruits are great food, but they do have a significant amount of calories (at least 40 to 60, with many above 100 calories per fruit) You have to include them. As for vegetables, they may be low in cals, but it is good to log them since you may also want to watch your intake of fiber, etc. And many times you eat them in…

Completely agree, well put.

I don't believe that Dr included avocados, nuts as part of the "no oils". He is talking about the oils you add to food. This is an excerpt from his website's Q&A: http://www.heartattackproof.com/qanda.htm 4. Why does the diet eliminate oil entirely? NO OIL! Not even olive oil, which goes against a lot of other advice out…

Thank you again Cap !

Wow, what a great response ! I have learned quite a bit from it, thank you very much ! Now, given that the short answer to the question was "it depends"... and that we know it will be less than 100% efficient... Do you have any estimates on efficiency range for the digestive system, in terms of what the Caloric…

Tanya, I have lost more than 36 pounds in a litlle more than 3 months, almost no exercise. Simply follow your max calories per day in MFP and you will be fine ! Of course, once you recover, by all means exercise ! I know that I will soon need to do, to gain muscle and be healthier

by the way, that text from the second link makes me think that the Nutrition tables already take into account the efficiency of the digestive system. is that the right interpretation?
