  • My favorites are the Philips she3590. They’re wired, but super comfy and secure. They do block all outside noise, though, so I wear only 1 when running outside. I’ve tried a couple wireless options (Senso and Beats) and they were five, but didn’t match the comfort of the Philips.
  • I've been out of commission for since August, tending to/rehabbing Achilles tendonosis (both) that started (and was subsequently ignored) when I was training for my first marathon in 2017. I ran my first mile yesterday - LOL! Not yet registered for anything, but hoping to be half-marathon ready for the fall (several good…
  • I went up a half size in shoes. The blister/callouses weren't so much an issue, but I lifted the nail such that it grows thick underneath now and is permanently grayish :( For longer distances, I cover the top with a small bandaid (the waterblock ones are real thin) to protect it.
  • I'm not, but Disney races are SO fun! I ran the marathon (my first) this past January and only Disney can make 26.2 miles that magical - LOL! All of their races start early (the first corral usually steps off at 5:30am), so they can get roads re-opened before parks open. April can be chilly, but odds are better for great…
  • I stayed at Caribbean Beach and saw the same...tons of runners out there in the rain that morning. I admire the dedication . . . congrats! I only ran the marathon and Disney is the only place where one can say that and feel inadequate - LOL! I'm about 30% thinking I'd like to try/train for Dopey 2019, but I'd like to get…
  • So, how did it go? Did you run a HM on your own since the race was cancelled? I'm 2 weeks out of completing my first marathon and I'm feeling a little empty - LOL! I think my focus for this year is going to be on speed . . . the sub-30 minute 5K eludes me and I'd really like to get there. But, I really like the HM…
  • It was so cold and windy...temp at the start of the race was 36F with a stiff north wind, which was a headwind for a good portion of the course. But, I DID IT!!! Around what I was expecting for time...6:35.03. It was the most physically challenging thing I've ever done...and I've given birth twice - LOL!
  • The race I run Thanksgiving morning has a 5K and 10K option...the 10K is just twice around. I've run the 5K before and found my GPS app to be pretty close. But, for the 10K, on the 2nd loop, the course sends you though a neighborhood, presumably to get that extra .1 mile. It adds, however, an extra ~.25 mile...so my 10K…
  • I don't, mainly because, 5K fun-run or half-marathon, I don't wear anything new on race day. I see plenty of people that do, though, and I can't say that I've thought much or made any judgements (i.e. dorky or not) about it. Races around here (MA/NH) give them out with packet pick up.
  • 1. How many hours of sleep to you usually get? Anywhere from 4 to 7 2. Do you feel like it is enough? Not even close 3. Do you increase your sleep time as you increase your mileage? I'm going to have to 4. Does you sleep affect your training? Yes I work early morning shifts . . . I'm up for the day at 2:30am. If/when I can…
  • $100/month for a local, family-owned gym. Unlimited classes (spinning, yoga, boxing, OTF-type training), plenty of cardio machines, pretty extensive weight room (machines and free). I pay a little extra per month for unlimited childcare. There are a few other amenities that have nominal fees, but I don't partake. I could…
  • I once was someone who would run only if being chased by a zombie, but now I do it for FUN - LOL! Small goals yield great rewards! Congrats on starting your program...this is an awesomely supportive community, whether your goal is to run a marathon or around the block :)
  • Congratulations!! After my first half, I thought I'd do another half at some point, but swore up and down I'd never do longer. Well, I ran another half this past October, then again yesterday (same race as my first), and I'm planning a full in January! Running has strange effects like that - LOL! Good luck with that…

  • I've been running on Brooks Launch since last year. I first had Ravennas, which I loved, until I got the Launch...now, I find them too heavy.
  • I love this thread - LOL! I have no hope of ever winning, so the best I get is a pie at the end of a Thanksgiving 10K :) To the point of the post, I try to stock up of previous year model running shoes. It saves a few dollars and keeps my feet happy since companies change the design and upgrades are not always a good thing.
  • Thank you so much for all this fantastic insight! As it is, I feel like I run SO slow (generally around 10:30, though my half average is about a minute slower), so it's difficult to imagine slowing it down, purposely, even more. I won't lie . . . it kind of crushed me to read that I could fail at this marathon attempt…
  • Another +1 for MobyCarp! I hurt my hip around this time last year and more or less ignored it. I was in mild to moderate pain for a long time . . . I actually don't even remember when it started to not hurt because I'd been so used to living with it. This past February, I hurt the other hip, same pain (though a bit worse),…

  • Good luck! Registration for Marathon weekend 2017 opens tomorrow and I'm giddy over it! I'm planning on the full only, my first, but I am so excited about the whole weekend of events!
  • I love a "summer" salad of baby spinach leaves, sliced strawberries, crumbled feta, and walnuts with a poppy seed dressing.
  • OMG, where are you people from?!?! If there was a chance to encounter rattlesnakes, tarantulas, coyotes, or naked people on my run, I'd treadmill it all the time - LOL!
  • Depending on the day/my gym schedule, I either just rinse with water or use a non-foaming hair cleanser (Enjoy is the brand). I use actual shampoo and conditioner but once or twice a week. I found my hair/head to be much less greasy since falling into this routine.
  • Properly fitting shoes and good ankle/calf stretches before/after running helped me. I also wear compression sleeves on longer runs (anything over 10K).
  • The less than 1% statistic is hard to grasp because I know so many people who have run marathons. Then again, my circles are mostly comprised of runners, so I guess the stat in my world would be skewed ;) I'm hoping to join the ranks in January. Best of luck to you!! Can't wait to hear all about it!
  • I wear sunglasses, all the time (obvi, I don't run outside in the dark). I wear contacts and find the shades cut any wind/irritation. Plus, I'm pretty photophobic and wear sunglasses outside almost all the time. I'm 20/500...pretty sure I'd somehow die trying to run without corrective lenses - LOL! I can barely find my…
  • Get out of my head - LOL! Seriously, this is me, as well. I tried GU on a long training run and the texture of it did me in. I have a couple bloks roughly every 60-75 minutes, which for me is around miles 6 and 12 for a half.
  • 2 halfs in May . . . and a variety of 3-milers-to-10Ks in between :) Ideally, I'd like to break 2:28 for the half because, ultimately, it's part of full training . . . planning that for next January. For realz!! I kind of feel out of my league. You people effin' ROCK!!
  • Oreos and ".gif wars" . . . best thread for 2016! So far, anyway :) I'm an Oreo purist . . . plain, "single" stuffed, eaten whole. Occasionally dipped in milk.
  • This made me, literally, LOL! Hi Gouldy and welcome! This is a hugely knowledgeable and supportive group! We have similar goals, so we should be friends :)
in Hello!! Comment by rrcoffey January 2016
  • Add me to the slow group :) I'm between 10-12min/mile, depending on a LOT of factors. My halfs have been 2:28 and 2:35...my 5K PR is 31:28. I figure speed will come with experience...experience comes with increased milage. My goals generally include running most, if not all, of the race, finishing, and living to tell about…
