I'm really working on the water thing. So far today, about 20 oz.

I can't believe the shoe argument went on so long. The point is not the shoes. The point is deciding one's priorities. If you want or need to spend a lot of money on shoes, that's not an issue. That just means something else must take a lower priority. We all get to choose what's most important to us. There isn't one right…

This is definitely the way to go. I have a portion of my paycheck direct deposited to another account, so I never see it. You get used to not having it. The other rule - want less. I don't watch much tv and I don't read fashion magazines. They are constantly bombarding you with things you supposedly "need." Create a really…

My current approach isn't a "plan." I try to build my meals around vegetables. That way I'm eating more veggies and less meat and other junk.

I am using a plan from Jeff Galloway. He has plans for just about any distance, including half marathon. This is the Galloway run/walk method. My middle-aged joints love it. You should be able to Google it. I have one of his books (there are many), and the book includes a bunch of plans.

Bump.

I eat PB, too. Agree with limiting the amount, though.

3.7 miles for me.

I didn't have a large amount to lose to begin with (so probably not as noticeable as those who have a lot to lose), but after I had lost 15 pounds (before coming to MFP), people still hadn't noticed. In fact, no one noticed until I started wearing new clothes that fit me much better. Then all of a sudden, people were…

If you have to, break it up into small segments, like taking several 10 minute walks each day. It all counts. Doing something is always better than doing nothing.

I'm in for 120 miles in October. This is my first month on this challenge. I really need the motivation. I've gotten really bored and complacent about my workout program. Thanks for starting this.

Wish I had a good answer for this, but I don't. I've had the same problem. Sometimes I try to make an informed guess by looking up calories for various dishes and averaging them all out. There's no guarantee that it's even close to how your restaurant prepared it, though. I find this especially difficult with small ethic…

Listen to iWaffle. That approach works. On days when I really thought I couldn't do it (or thought I didn't want to), I would get dressed and tell myself I was just going to walk to the mailbox and back. Once I had done that, I was ready to go. Trick yourself into taking even the smallest movement toward the run (i.e.,…

I was really happy to see a post I could relate to (that is, not a huge amount of weight lost, but still a big transformation for both of you). Both of you look happy and fit! Congrats!

I used to drink coffee all day long. Now I don't drink it after noon. That's when I switch to vodka. Bwahaha! Just kidding. I have had severe acid reflux since I was 15 years old. I can mostly control it with diet, but nothing sets it off like coffee does. I drink lots of herbal tea, sometimes plain and sometimes with a…

Ok, I'm incompetent at using the "quote" feature, but I am trying Overnight Oats tomorrow with some fresh red raspberries I just got tonight.

There are plenty of good road rides where I live, but there are a couple of intertwined routes I prefer. They are on mostly rural roads, so not much traffic there. There are a couple of convenience stores along the way, if you need an extra Gatorade, or if you need to use the facilities. In between, there are canopy roads,…

I'm glad someone is out there warning the younger folk about what's ahead. ;) (age 48)

I'm on board with the HRM. I have a Garmin Forerunner 305, and use it for biking and running. Before I got it, the estimates I found for cal burn were enormous. Now I have a more realistic number to work with.

Happy 500! This is so awesome. Your post brought tears to my eyes. What lucky kids you have to have such a great dad setting an example for lifelong fitness and good health!

Welcome to my world! I'm just getting back to MFP after a long time away, and I also used to stress out over eating out. Here's an idea. If you know you are going to go out for a meal, get in some extra exercise that day (the key is that you have to plan to go out; not just go out on the fly because you failed to plan a…

I usually go for items that support my active lifestyle. Here are some examples: new running shoes; cool cycling jersey; BondiBand headbands (manage my unruly hair while I'm working out). I like having the fitness clothes that fit and look good. Makes me feel good about getting out there and working out.

I agree with what many of the posters have to say. Avoid processed food. People now are trained to think a snack comes out of a package or a vending machine. A snack is an apple, or some raw nuts, or maybe a little organic yogurt. Build your big meal around the veggies (instead of a slab of meat), and that will…

You look great!

First of all, congratulations! You look fabulous! I'm not as tall as you (wish I were), but don't get too hung up on the charts of what's supposed to be "normal." I have about 15 pounds to lose, but the charts say I should lose 20 - 35. When I was very young, I weighed in that range, but I was skinny, no muscle and very…

Definitely try to get in an open water swim before your event. It makes a difference, because you need to practice sighting buoys (as you will in a race). Find a lake, or if you are near the coast, swim there. I live in FL, so I try to swim open water in the ocean. It's usually tougher than most of my events, so it's great…

I also have a reflective vest. You might want to add a flashing light you can clip to the back of your pants or the vest (like the kind you see on bikes). They make you very, very visible. They are fairly inexpensive. Set it to strobe and you will be seen! Be safe out there!

One more thing. Do yourself and favor and go for run after every bike ride you do. Even if it's only for 10 minutes, it really helps you acclimate to going from the bike to the run. It will feel strange at first, but it does get better. Now I prefer to run after at least warming up on the bike.

Samantha, I started doing sprint tris last year and completed 5 of them. This year I have done 3 and plan to get in at least one more before the end of the season. About what to wear - don't worry too much on your first event. You'll see all kinds of things out there. Some women will swim in a swimsuit, and then just pull…
