  • My personal belief is that HRMs may not be accurate but they should be consistent. This provides a tool, then, to compare your performance (burn) from one day to another. Things like what you ate and how rested you are can greatly impact how you feel during your workout. HRMs can keep you honest with yourself.
  • Nuts are also a good option - though you have to watch the portions (or at least I do). I can eat almonds and pistachios like I'm in some kind of a competition if I'm not careful. ;)
  • If you're shoveling by hand, that's a great exercise too! Keep up the good work!
  • When I first started lifting free weights, I also started with a few personal training sessions. I consider it one of my better decisions! I would also say prepare before your first visit. Watch videos, read a couple of articles, etc. and then write down what you want to do when you get there. I think having a…
  • I get a similar response, specifically to apples. I found eating something small with it helps tremendously. For example, I will eat a small apple with; 7-10 almonds, or a light string cheese, or a hard boiled egg. Adding some type of healthy fat/protein COMPLETELY avoids the problem for me.
  • Made me chuckle. I was going to reply.... for the same reason we still use feet, inches, quarts, gallons etc. We never went metric. It was 'threatened' when I was in grade school but it never came to fruition. The chicken in the OP pita looks delicious!! I'd totally load that up with any vegetable!!!
  • ^^great advice!
  • I don't think that's excessive water consumption. However, I will say (from personal experience) that if you combine increased water with low calorie AND LOW SODIUM, you may need to be careful. I drink about 3.5-4.0 liters of water a day (1,500 calories). However, when I was also eating a low sodium diet, my electrolytes…
  • Funyons
  • I agree with Ready2Rock... 1 pound a week is awesome and should be celebrated. Are you watching any other food intake besides carbs? Total intake of calories can be too high even when eating a low carb diet.
  • I sent you a friend request on Nike. I've had mine for just under a year.
  • This is only a problem for me when eating out. At home, I use a combination of the smaller plate with weighed/measured food. When eating out, I have been successful in 'leaving food on my plate' using a couple of options when the portions are big:* Ask the waitstaff to bring you a to go container right away. Remove the…
  • What a great message -- both in terms of content and delivery. It was a great read. I have been attending the same group fitness class (or type of classes) for about 8 years. About once a month someone will comment that I make it look easy, how do I do it so well, or some other variation. My response is always "you will…
  • You look great! Congratulations on your progress and keep it up. It's clearly working for you!
  • Please add me! I'd like to participate.
  • I have "Core Wheels" which are like an ab roller but each hand can move independently. Highly effective and pretty difficult but I would absolutely recommend adding them in!

  • Oddly, I just realized my profile pic is of my finisher shirt for the Nashville run I did in April. That's pretty funny. Yup, still didn't like the running part.
  • I am not a runner either. Even when I was well conditioned in running (running 3-5 miles 2 or 3 times a week), I never got to the point where I liked it. Each time I woke in the morning and remembered it was a 'running day' I'd no longer look forward to my workout! I've accepted that I never will and as another poster…
  • I have a homemade recipe for a three bean and ground beef chili. It calls for three 15.9 oz cans of beans (plus the beef). It makes 6 servings and is under 400 calories. Consider double checking the portion and nutritional information. Also do you use the leanest meat you can find? I got the nutritional information for my…
  • I agree too.
  • One of my favorite comments was when a stranger at the gym asked me if I was a personal trainer because "you look fit and strong and you clearly know what you're doing". It was awesome.
  • I agree with starting with body weight exercises if you are on a budget and/or don't have access to a gym/health club.
  • I concur with those who suggest HRM for heart rate determination. I used to exercise by how I 'felt' during the workout. That turned out to be pretty sketchy for me. There are times when I feel like I'm working very hard and my HR will be at 140. Other days, a 140 HR feels like a walk in the part. It probably has to do…
  • Congratulations! You are an inspiration and seem to have a very logical reasonable approach. How long did it take for your mind to accept your weight loss and/or change in physical condition. I've just started maintenance and I often "forget" that I'm not the size I used to be.
  • Yes, I always continue on as normal. For me (personally), I don't view it as a reason to alter my behavior. If I'm tired or cramping I push through it and 99.99% of the time feel BETTER afterward.
  • Great question! I never intentionally changed my calorie in take around my lifting days when I started (8 years ago). However, I can say that as I gained muscle mass, I actually found myself to be hungry on my recovery days. Like the two replies above me, I would change WHAT I ate rather than how much. I would increase…
