I'm not a doctor, but I do have PCOS, and I've lost just shy of 60lbs so far this year without doing low carb. It's a popular suggestion for ladies with PCOS, but not always necessary.

Trial and error. I'll stick with the recommended calorie limit for a month. If I'm not losing at the rate I want to by then, I'll lower it, or if I'm losing too fast for comfort or if I'm hungry all the time, I'll raise it. Yes, you can. The saying goes that losing weight is 80% diet and 20% exercise. I haven't added any additional exercise to my routine, and I've lost 27lb.
