  • Yep. I'm an urban farmer. I grow over 33 different edibles in my yard, but not all at once. Best crops from: Avocados, tomatoes, raspberries, boysenberries. The berries make great daiquiris. :) For stuff that doesn't grow well in the summer heat, offset your planting. Since I use no pesticides, my spinach gets eaten in the…
  • I came back a week ago after two years or so. I maintained as planned after meeting my goal the 1st time, then I broke my ankle, was laid up for a month. I think that is when I started creeping up again. So far, it has been easier this second time around to get used to that "hungry feeling" and ignore same. Good luck!
  • Yes. My cholesterol numbers from blood tests were fine (all normal, HDL on the high side). Then I got free bacon for breakfast every weekday for 4 months. Next blood tests were way high. Cut out the bad foods I'd added (bad means eating way over moderation) and my blood numbers came back down. My doctor is a pill pusher.…
  • Water, and MFP provides direct support for tracking how much you consume. Water is not a food? I would argue that a zero calorie item is not food then also, for the same reasons water is not a food. P.S.-Fiber might come close, but unless it is 100% non-digestable , it probably has a calorie or two in it.…
  • I understand that a calorie deficit of about 3500 calories results in a pound of weight loss. If that is true, then to loose 14 pounds in one week, would mean you are eating a 7000 calorie/day deficit. Seems impossible. That's like enough calories for 3 people to eat normally for the day! More if they are smaller/lighter…
  • When I hit my goal, I tried to go zero deficit/surplus. Then the weight "slowly" started coming back over several months. I finally found the problem. My portion sizes were approximations. I found examples of under-reporting calories consumed during my weight loss (and no over-reporting). Not a big error, but enough so…

  • ^This (i.e. sedentary)
  • OMG.....like, Holiday Inn Express breakfasts are my downfall. BACON! SAUSAGE! CHEAP SCRAMBLED EGGS! :) Love 'em, but they screw up my blood tests when consumed daily over many months. Otherwise, I LUV 'EM! P.S.-The cinnamon rolls are to die for! Literally!
  • This brings up an interesting point. When only the little broken ones are left, and you don't want or can't weigh them, is there a "pour into the mouth" algorythm that approximates how many "pours" of little broken chips it takes to equal 15 strong, full bodied chips?
  • You can key sleep intervals retro-actively. The FB website converts the measurements over the time frame into a sleep record. I also seem to remember a profile setting for allowing "naps", I think. P.S.-Really enjoying this "in the weeds" detail, but then I've always been accurately accused of being anal.
  • I usually get about 5 chips per handful (sometimes less). Light grasp, so I don't crush their little bodies. :) So I eat 3 and a half handfuls, just so I don't cheat myself. Weighing takes way to much time, when you are trying to take every advantage. P.S.-I'm in maintenance mode, when I was just starting my weight loss, I…
  • Haven't used an elliptical, so can't compare. Have had a Gazelle in the TV room for many years (no dust on it). WD-40 and the right hex wrench periodically keeps the squeekin' away. Lean fwd/bck, harder. No resistance bar on ours. BUT, I have no problem getting into hear rate zones for aerobic reasons by going FAST for a…
  • I've had to live out of hotel rooms often over many years, as I have done contract work for over 25 years. Portion control over restaurant food is useful (the styrofoam cooler to keep the doggie bags in). However, there were a number of months that the place I stayed at had bacon and sausage every day (all you could eat).…
  • That all our kids won't survive our own stupidity.
  • I stand corrected. Thank you!
  • Regarding the pedometer (e.g. FB) vs. HRM arguments. Neither are right. You need both an HRM for "exertion not related to walking" (e.g. push-ups) AND a pedometer for the 7/24 calorie burns which are mostly (say 70% as a wild guess) related to walking. So, IMHO, trying to decide which is best for all activities is a futile…
  • I've worn a Ultra, then a One for the last 2 years. I bought it knowing it would not cover all calorie burn activities, but would get me a better TDEE without me having to do any mental work or just trust that the FB or MFP "activity level" was accurate enough. As stated by the OP, the FB adjusts the daily TDEE estimate…
  • Your out load thinking makes sense to me.
  • Honey is as bad as sucrose. Ok.....if you leave the pollen and the leg and wing parts in, then there is some additional nutrition besides pure calories from a quickly absorbed simple carbohydrate. When I worked for a bee keeper, I kinda liked the fact that my honey was not translucent (body parts, pollen, etc.).
  • Quoting myself here to comment on those who don''t want to be told of their condition. I was always slim and trim, until about the age of 56, when my wife made me realize I was moving toward obese. Yep.....I had to buy larger clothes that fit. Yep.....My stamina at physical exertion was declining. Yep.....I saw the muffin…
  • Without a calorie deficit (calories consumed less than calories burned), you won't loose weight. You don't mention dieting, so the prior posters' questions are pertinent. alpha-anemone! What a strange and interesting name. I am a minor fan of the coelenterates. Even kept an anemone or two in a salt water aquarium (for…
  • I'm extremely grateful to my wife, for finally telling me I was getting fat (+40 lbs.).
  • ^----this. No matter what measurement device you end up choosing, the "trend" is what will tell you if you are going in the right direction. What is the goal then, if not a %BodyFat measurement? When the mirror and your significant other (or equivalent) tell you that you have arrived at goal (the device will let you know…
  • ^----This. Note the positive attitude. Note the self examination resulting in an understanding that a slight calorie deficit will lead to weight loss without having to feel like you are starving. Good luck....OP. Attitude.....then technique (like the quoted poster here).
  • Hmmm......"This is for the birds!!!" implies you don't think weight control is for you. Could it be that the lack of fitness in your life is just not bad enough yet for you to do something about it? A subject like "why can't I succeed at weight control" is a positive way of stating that you are committed, trying, and…
  • Good response. I sometimes find myself in the same situation, but not this time. Here are my references on my position(at least for the smoking thang'): If you're liberal.....http://www.nbcnews.com/health/smoking-employees-cost-6-000-year-more-study-finds-6C10182631 If you're…
  • Those who live longer pay more premiums. Those who don't, go to the hospital as soon as they have a heart attack or can't breath, racking up 10s of thousands in expenses, which won't be covered by the premiums they pay because they will live a long life (you say they die early, I say they die earlier after huge medical…
  • I think it is fine if someone wants to kill themselves early with high medical bills. No banning, no rationing, no etc. Just don't make me help pay for their lack of personal responsibility.
