wow, your post sounds like I could have written it. I have the advantage of living alone with a small place. I go to bed as soon as I get home,eat nothing after 8pm. I generally get up and do whatever needs doing until an hour and ahalf before work. boring? yeah , but thats how I manage

I see someone at the gym use the eliptical machine with using just one leg,the other rests on the back of the other's ankle. Maybe after you recover a bit? Also,don't discount walking. just keep moving after you can

Before my change in mindset, I used to always try this one. I would make a kettle of soup and at the end of the week throw out 3/4 of a kettle of soup. I did like the taste,but wasn't good at sticking to things. My suggestion, a small pot to start... :}
