  • Cutting back on processed and prepackaged foods should help with the sodium. Prepared foods are full of sodium even when the dish doesn't taste salty. Try old fashioned rolled oats (or steel cut oats if you have the time to cook them) and fruit in the morning instead of instant oatmeal. You can control the sugar and the,…
  • I never tried to trick my kids into eating anything. I never made different meals for the kids and didn't do the "short order cook" thing. They were required to take at least a "no thank you" bite of everything on the table. If they didn't eat, they had to wait until the next meal - no snacks. Even still, we didn't keep…
  • This is a meatless blog, but they have great kid friendly recipes. All I have tried have been yummy. http://peasandthankyou.com/
  • Congratulations!!! I have never EVER been one to run, but now I am training for my first ever 5K. You have given me motivation and inspiration!
  • That is awesome! Congratulations! You are truly inspirational!
  • I've started making green smoothies and LOVE them! I was always afraid of a smoothie that was the color of a tree frog! Not afraid anymore! My favorite one so far is this: 1 cup almond milk 1 banana 1/2 cup frozen mango chunks 1 tbsp raw flax seed 3 cups of fresh baby spinach leaves 1/4 of an avocado DEEE-licious!
  • This is my and my youngest daughter's favorite way to eat sweet potatoes: http://vegancajun.blogspot.com/2011/10/sweet-potatoes-and-keen-what.html
  • I'm pretty picky, too. "When in doubt, throw it out" is my motto. I will cut around brown spots or blemishes on my lettuce or other veggies and fruits if possible.
  • I made these lentil tacos tonight for supper (subbing vegan sour cream for the dairy sour cream - but I've also made it leaving out sour cream altogether) and they are delicious. I use a flour tortilla instead of a fried shell. http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/food/views/Spiced-Lentil-Tacos-351390 Has anyone mentioned…
  • I'm vegan. My burgers are either marinated portobello mushrooms or homemade veggie burgers and are low fat, lower in calories than the meat based alternative, and I don't consider them cheats. Same with pizza (no cheese, topped with veggies and a garlicky vinaigrette). Dinner starts, though, with a large salad. Same with…
  • I did Callanetics YEARS ago after my first child was born and it was very effective. I had a book, but it was lost in a move. I have seen some older videos available via rental some years back.
  • I count everything.
  • Make sure that trigger foods are out of the house completely. For me, that would be Cool Mint Oreos and chips and salsa. Make sure you have some lower calorie, healthy alternatives. I love an apple with peanut butter. Don't allow yourself the jar - put the apple slices on a plate, measure out the PB, fix a drink (for me, I…
  • I'm 5'2" and my 14s were tight when I started this weight loss journey. My weight was right at 160. I tend to carry all my weight in my bottom and hips.
  • I've been vegan for 2 years now. I haven't found it to be difficult at all. Before I did eat meat, but didn't "love" it - I did love fish and dairy, but haven't craved it even the first time, which was surprising to me. I totally avoided all vegan alternatives to meat and dairy (with the exception of almond milk replacing…
  • Pumpkin puree and pumpkin pie spice. Fresh chopped apple and apple pie spice. Frozen berries (a rasp/blue/blackberry blend is my favorite). Fresh peaches. Walnuts and a bit of maple syrup.
  • Hahaha! I have those "birthin' hips" too, honey! I'm 5'2. When I started my journey in August, I weighed almost 160 and my size 14's were TIGHT! Now I'm down to 137 and my 12's are baggy.
  • I'm vegan. If you would like to friend me, my diary is able to be viewed by my friends. I rarely eat out, eat VERY little processed foods, and cook almost every day. I love trying new dishes and I feel being vegan is anything but boring. Do you eat beans/legumes?
  • About 2/3 cup (over 1/3 cup quinoa). I don't know fiber content. Sorry.
  • I had high cholesterol and was anemic. I have been vegan for two years. My anemia is gone and my cholesterol is down. Many mornings I will make a fruit smoothie and will add 2 tbsp of blackstrap molasses for iron and calcium. I do not take iron supplementation and my vitamins are iron-free.
  • I'm vegan. Tonight we had Portobello Philly Cheese "Steakless" Sandwiches. DE-licious! http://vegancajun.blogspot.com/ The kids and the hubs had cheese on theirs. Mine was cheese-less.
  • No pills here. My initial goal was to lose just about 25#. Not my total weight loss goal. One step at a time. My final goal weight is another 20# down. My first lifestyle change was when I went from a standard American diet to a vegan diet two years ago. No weight loss, although EVERYONE kept telling me I was losing…
  • I prefer the TASTE of almond milk (unsweetened in my cereal or to drink, Vanilla for my oatmeal), but I'll use plain unsweetened soy in my smoothies to get more protein. I also use the unsweetened soy in savory recipes.
  • I love water and drink it plain most of the time, but I just can't get in enough of it. Never have. I've never been a soda or iced tea drinker, either. I guess I'm just not a thirsty person. The big Smart Water bottles are good for me, too. I reuse mine. I have an insulated water bottle that I keep by me almost all the…
  • I go to Zumba 5 days a week. I absolutely love it! When I first started, I was in the back and was lost as anything. My super coordinated 17-yo daughter was in the front row wowing everyone with her ability to catch on to the steps and look adorable doing it. :^/ She did NOT get it from her mother. Or her father, for that…
  • I would be interested in knowing what he thinks you should eat instead of fruit. In my opinion, fruit (raw, unadulterated fruit, not juice or dried fruit or fruit dipped in chocolate) should be fine in a well balanced. Make sure you are getting your veggies in as well.

  • Great job! Congratulations! That is a big victory in anybody's book!
  • Oatmeal, especially old fashioned rolled oats or steel cut oats, are good for you. The highly processed instant oats with loads of sugar - not so good. Wheat is getting a bad rap now because of the "gluten free" craze. I have friends who are gluten intolerant (celiac and non-celiac), but for most people, whole wheat…
  • Don't chew it - let it just melt on your tongue. Mmmm....
  • I don't worry about the sugar from my fresh fruit. As long as it is not dried - most dried fruits are very concentrated sources of sugars (and calories) and much of the time they also have additional sugar coating the fruit.
