  • You could make an argument for the opposite point of view as well. If you are working out in the cold, your body temperature will be more easily regulated (OP already said warm for a few hours after). This would mean that you body might be doing less work for control. Many people work out in a sweat suit in a hot…
  • It might help if you open your diary to the public. People could check it out and suggest things to change.
  • I agree with this. Also, if you make your diary open to the public, we might be able to find what is wrong. Without stats and diary, anything said in this thread is just a guess.
  • When I get tired of the same old thing, I try to change it up some. For all of these, I always do less weight than my max. Here's a few suggestions: 1. Do a set of 100. Try to work toward finding a weight where you fail around 90. 2. I don't know what it is actually called, but do a set of 7's. 7 reps only doing the first…
  • 1. Grab a pack of bacon. 2. Calculate the nutrition content of 1 pound or kg or whatever. 3. Make a new entry into the mfp database.
  • Your intestines have tons and tons of neurons attached. The bacteria are thought to embed in your intestine lining, giving them access to send signals through to the neurons. I do not believe the bacteria are saying "Walk five steps forward" or to have complex emotions. However, is it such a stretch for them to be causing…
  • I work on symbiotic relationships. The symbionts actually have mechanisms to protect us from the pathogens. However, what we ingest affects them to the point that they can no longer protect us. For those wondering, no I do not know the secret to not harm the good guys :) There are many different species hanging around. The…
  • I think more recently it is estimated that we have 10 times more bacterial cells than human cells. I actually work on this. We do not know what the exact interactions are, but the gut-brain axis (the name it is given) seems plausible. One scientist in China actually lost 100 pounds or so just by feeding the bacteria in his…
  • Weight is a function of gravity, which is constant. If the mass is the same, then weight is also the same.
  • Technically, mass = density x volume and weight = mass x gravity, so weight = density x volume x gravity. Since you would keep volume and gravity constant, the more dense muscle would mean more weight. If you are making volume not a constant, then you can pretty much call it anything you want. For examples, fat weighs more…
  • As far as I know, it generally takes 48-72 hours for anything you eat to completely pass through your system.
  • When I am eating clean and lifting, I notice (for myself anyway), for every 5 pounds lost, around 1 pound is lean body mass. The LBM also seems to spring back faster than bodyfat once you change up your diet. Keep shooting for a healthier you instead of some guideline numbers and you will do just fine.
  • I can't stand "healthy" numbers either. From those charts, I am in the large frame category. Right now I am at ~22% bodyfat and want to lose another 20 pounds or so to see what I'll look like at 15%. From the "healthy" chart, it says I have to lose 60 pounds. That would put me at negative bodyfat%. Ha.
  • I don't really need to stay motivated. I just said to myself two years ago that I wanted to live healthier. I do not care if I lose or gain weight. I use MFP more because I think it is fun to see what I am putting into my body. Basically, if you view this journey as your entire life instead of "needing" to hit some…
  • I agree with this. Drop the creamer in you coffee and you will already drop a quarter of a pounds a week. If you can get rid of the sugar and go with straight black coffee, that's even more calories saved. Same with soda, go for water at least until you have the diet under control. The other thing I noticed is that you…
  • I do like some meat on dem bones. At 6'5'', 270 lbs, I feel like I would break a really skinny woman. No offense to the skinny ladies out there :)
  • I don't know if you have whey protein, but some people cannot process it (similar effects as lactose intolerance). Also, I agree with having some olive oil. Even a teaspoon a day would probably do you wonders.
  • Yeah I agree with this. Depending on the amount of strain put on the muscles, they can take up to 2 weeks to fully repair (talking about normal training, not injuries). I usually go hard for 4-6 weeks of 4-5 days a week of single body parts (and 6 days rest inbetween) and then HAVE to take a full week off. My body just…
  • Maybe open your diary to the public until you get some responses here, then close it again. My guess is that you ate less food before your scale day last week than you did this week. The body takes 2-3 day to completely process and get rid of food waste. If you were really clean 2-3 days prior to last week's weigh in, you…
  • I have a few of the same problems that you have. Everybody assumes that I'm slouching, but really I'm not :) I also feel like I am going to pass out or throw up whenever I do weighted squats. There's a way to hold the bar in front, closer to your waist. That works for me, but it is a lot harder to hold on when you go…
  • Losing weight does not depend on what food you eat, it depends on how much. You could get your caloric intake from eating a certain amount of butter or even spoonfuls of granulated sugar. It would not be healthy for you to do this... but it would be just as unhealthy as eating only broccoli to obtain your caloric intake.
  • 32 and started ~300 lbs. I am not looking to lose any specific amount, just to live better :) Best wishes for all of you!
  • Think of the hunter/gathering era of humans. That is the essence of a paleo diet. It is a lot of raw, uncooked, vegetables, nuts and fruit. I do not know everything about it, but the really strict paleo diet is having handfuls of the raw things during the day and then a big meal with mostly meat at dinner. Sort of if you…

  • I have seen people making arguments for both sides. So I go in the middle of an intense workout.
  • I may be misquoting this story, but here goes: A family and son were having a discussion about his upcoming birthday. Since the son is close to getting his driver's license, he asked his dad for a car. The dad thinks it over for a a moment and says, "Son, if you keep your room clean, get some better grades in school and…
  • If your kid likes soup, you could make gumbo. Gumbo is a great way to have grains like rice, a bunch of veggies and some protein (if you add chicken or shrimp). EDIT: Frozen bananas are like popsicles. If you grind it up in a food processor, frozen bananas come out like ice cream.
  • I'm the opposite. I started exercising to relieve some of the stress and am in better shape now while writing my dissertation than I have been the rest of my life :D Aaaah! You must have stolen that job from me. Just kidding, congrats!
  • Drinking lots of water helps, too. If the closest thing to you is a bottle of water instead of snacks, that might be what you reach for.
  • Right now I am tormented. I cannot find a job anywhere. I have about 90 pages written for my dissertation, but am taking a break to send out another round of job applications. On top of that I am teaching classes. Good times.
