  • I bought a dress form to help my sewing projects...had to take my measurements to set it up and was pretty shocked by the numbers and realized that what I looked like in my head vs what I looked like in reality were drastically different. That was the kick in the pants I needed to start working out regularly.
  • I’m very close to you in height/weight - forget what BMI says and ignore the naysayers who scoff because compared to most people you’re thin. Has your weight/shape strayed from what it is when you are content with life and eating/exercising optimally? That’s all you need to worry about. Most of my life my BMI said I was…
  • Do you like kombucha? Not everyone does, but it’s my favorite fizzy drink - it still has sugar, but less than soda and it’s a natural probiotic. I could drink it all day/every day if it wasn’t so expensive! The price helps make sure it’s a treat and not an everyday beverage. You might enjoy it if you like fizz!
  • Dandelion greens/chicory. I make salads with it several times a week and never get bored. You have to like bitter greens though!
  • I'm surprised that no one has mentioned that a lot of the bikini competitors have breast implants, or feel pressured to get them, if they're serious about competing and it's not just a one-time thing to celebrate a significant weight loss. This may or may not be an issue for you, just surprised it hasn't been mentioned.
  • I started MFP to track my iron. I take a supplement but it's also been eye opening to see which foods contain significant iron (like leeks, who knew?!?).
  • Yogi Tea has several "detox" teas...you don't need more than your liver to actually detox, but their Peach Detox makes delicious iced tea! The Roasted Dandelion detox is pretty tasty too, almost like chai.
  • Soups! Not necessarily heavy chowders, but lighter, broth-based fish soups can be wonderful.
  • The yoga journal website has a bunch of videos and different types of sequences.
  • Slap Ya Mama HOT cajun seasoning! I put that stuff on everything!
  • I monitor my iron as well. I add Nutiva hemp protein powder to smoothies/yogurt/etc., it delivers 25% RDA of iron. If you like bitter leafy greens, dandelion greens contain a ton of iron.
  • Have you considered keeping active memberships at both? Perhaps go to the larger gym when you're ready for a change in routine, but keep your membership open at your work gym for days when you just want a lighter workout or you don't have time to get to the other one? I have two gyms - one near my office and one near my…
  • Weekends are WAY easier for me. I have an unpredictable, erratic work schedule a commute from hell and I am legitimately lucky if I have more than 30 minutes a day that doesn't involve work, commuting to/from work, or getting ready for work. During the week, my workout plans are constantly thwarted because things come up…
  • I'm too broke to have to buy all new clothes!
  • I don't know if it helps with weight loss, but I prefer classes with warm or hot rooms - I feel much less stiff and I'm able to maintain steadier, deeper breathing.
  • Spice & Tea Exchange sells an awesome ginger turmeric tea, I've been drinking a lot of that lately. I like anything with ginger or mint.
  • Manitoba Harvest HempPro. It's also high in fiber and iron. It doesn't blend with the liquid so if you can't stand a gritty texture it's not for you, but if you don't mind the texture it's great.
  • A few favorites: Slap Ya Mama Cajun seasoning, lime juice, chipotles in adobo, toasted flax seeds, chile-infused vinegars.
  • Any kind of ballet will work. If you choose a video with a segment for jumps, just skip that part. Ballet will tone you like crazy without shaking the house!
  • Ooh, I love all these hot sauce suggestions! I love spicy food but I usually use fresh or dried chiles rather than a sauce. I can't wait to try some of these!
  • Whole Foods had organic collard greens on sale a while back, and ever since I've been chopping up a few slices of organic bacon into 1-inch slices, cooking them til they were almost crisp, then adding a bunch of collards (shredded) to the pan and sautéing it just until the collards are wilted. Then I add cracked black…
  • SHE LOOKS FINE! Of course her skin looks taut, she clearly has a small frame and small bone structure, and she was carrying a LOT of excess weight! Give her skin some time to adjust and stop sagging, and she will look fine. So she has a low/underweight BMI, BFD! As I said, she has a very small frame. I'm built the same…
  • YES! You will LOVE it! I danced when I was younger - never professionally, but I practically lived at the studio and performed. I was never in better shape than I was when I was dancing - granted, when you're taking at LEAST one class a day, 5-6 days a week, it would be difficult not to be in good shape. When we had to…
  • It depends how I'm feeling - my only consistent symptom/complaint during my TOM is that it screws up my sleep (I either can't fall asleep, or I wake up every half hour, or I wake up 3 hours before my alarm and can't fall back asleep). Valerian tea helps, but sometimes it's just a lost cause. This usually occurs during the…
  • This sounds weird, but drink PediaLyte. It replenishes vitamins and minerals without the sugars and artificial colors that you'll find in sports drinks.
  • I love the stuff! One of the things I like about it is that it adds nutrition, but unlike a lot of multivitamins its nutrients aren't unnecessarily large doses. Plus, I like the taste. If you get a chance, try the ORAC Superfood, it includes berries so it has a slight berry flavor to it, which is more palatable for some…
  • My old self. I was never "too tired" to hit the gym, go out with friends, cook after work. I was never too apathetic/stubborn/complacent/lazy to try a new dance class. I've fallen away from my good habits, but by looking back at my own life I know that my goals are achievable, because I achieved them before. My external…
  • 112lb. It's lower than what I am "supposed" to weigh at 5'6 if you're only judging by BMI/some other prescribed factor that doesn't take individuals into account, but I have always weighed between 108-113 and been very healthy - my doctor was never concerned with my weight, as I ate healthy, exercised, and always had…
  • Sardines. Not only are they cheap, but they're environmentally sustainable as well, and high in Omega-3s. The flavor is a bit strong for some people, but it's worth a shot (the canned ones are a lot stronger than fresh, FYI). I marinate them in fresh lemon juice with parsley and garlic, and then throw them under the…
  • You can carry one in your gym bag and eat it without utensils if you get leg/foot cramps. There are lots of other potassium-rich foods, but not many that are as convenient as bananas.
