  • No one is criticizing the individual exercises, just the way they're performed. I'm going to break down, from my own research, reasons I won't exclusively do Crossfit, and why I don't think others should either. 1. Speed over form - it doesn't matter how bad you look doing it, as long as you get it done. Weight training…
  • There's nothing wrong with exercising, but weight training at a young age can be detrimental.
  • I need to correct something, the level 1 certification for Crossfit is a 2 day seminar, not a week. Here is another good article, which is quite fair: http://www.t-nation.com/free_online_article/sports_body_training_performance_investigative/the_truth_about_crossfit
  • Are you disputing the fact that all you have to do to become a certified Crossfit instructor is to pay some money and attend a class? That's not generalizing, that's informing. Are there more educated Crossfit instructors? Sure. Are there Crossfit instructors with no other formal training? Sure. That doesn't change the…
  • Also, to become a "certified" Crossfit instructor, you just have to pay $1000 and attend a week long course...no pass/fail test. To become a higher level instructor, you pay more money and attend another course....still no pass/fail test. So pretty much, if you have cash, you're certified to teach Crossfit. Not to mention,…
  • I'm lifting to get stronger...looks will come with strength. If you want to get into power lifting, you should do a 5x5 program. Stronglifts 5x5 looks good, and I've done Madcow's 5x5 with a lot of success. My schedule doesn't fit for a 5x5 right now, or I'd be doing Stronglifts. I currently do a 4 day split: Day 1 -…
  • There's a difference between droping weights due to failure, and throwing weights. Its okay to drop weights safely to the ground, but you should never throw them. I'm guilty of trying to eek out 1 last rep and dropping a set of dumbbells. I usually don't grunt either, but I talk to myself..."come on, one more, up up up."…
  • I wish my gym had a ban on.....complainers.
  • No, they don't test because the test is something like $300 a pop, since they're mostly just testing for elevated testosterone and testing for individual drugs is even more expensive. At my old department, some of the SWAT guys used, but it was never discussed...but some found it suspicious that 3 guys who went over to the…
  • 2 minutes from Atlanta OTP.
  • Curls in the power rack!
  • Don't forget back. This is my current split: Day 1: Chest/Triceps Day 2: Back/Biceps Day 3: Shoulders/Core Day 4: Legs
  • I wish there was a facepalm smiley..... You will not get "big and bulky" unless you eat a calorie surpluss, nor could you get as large as Franco Columbu if you didn't use steroids. Now I'm not knocking your choice, by why would you want to look like a 120lb weakling when you could look fit and strong.
  • I thought about that schedule as well...the only thing is that it would put me with little sleep for 2 days on week 1 and 1 day on week 2. Now if I had a desk job or something, that wouldn't be a big deal, but I'm a police officer and I want to avoid my reaction time being slower due to lack of sleep. Thanks, though, but I…
  • No one can tell you how long to rest it but you. Now its okay to work out with slight muscle pulls, as long as you don't push yourself too hard. In all honesty, try to give it a go, but if you're in too much pain, stop and do something else....shoulder injuries can deter a good workout program for months if not taken care…
  • I did Madcow's 5x5 and had insane strength gains for the 12 weeks I did it. Its sort of tedious on the Friday workout, but if you're an exerpienced lifter its a nice change. For my "deload week" I typically don't go to the gym at all....it usually falls on a week I go on vacation or something.
  • Getting someone to watch my daughter isn't the problem, she has day care. I get home at 6:30am, wife and daughter wake up at 7:30am, by the time daughter is ready for school its 8:30am. If I drop daughter off by 9:00am, get home and in bed by 9:30am, fall asleep by 10:00am, and wake up by 4:00pm to get ready to leave for…
  • You're what's called "skinny fat." At 120lbs, even at 5'5", you shouldn't have love handles. You need to start strength training immediately. After reading up on various 5x5 programs, Stronglifts 5x5 is the way to go....google it, and do it. EDIT: Sorry, missed the part where you said you were strength training. Please…
  • Squats, Deadlifts, Military Presses....no other ab exercises needed.
  • Because wearing gloves during cardio burns more calories...just like racing stickers increase a Honda Accord's HP by 3.
  • Nothing. There are people who get the "runner's high," which I've never had...I just get boredom. You don't have to run to be fit, you can get the same benefits by lifting weights....excuse me, lifting heavy weights.
  • Bleh, "toning" again..... If you don't lose fat, but build muscle, you'll actually make yourself bigger. However, do rows, deadlfits, and pull-ups (or lat pulldowns).
  • The only thing I saw was that with the heavier weight, you occassionally looked down, not straight ahead, which caused your head to move forward slightly.
  • Also remember, your triceps make up most of the size on your arms, not your biceps. Also make sure you're getting a full extension on your exercises (ie. bicep curls, extend your arm all the way down, then contract all the way up).
  • When strength training, I'm in the gym for 1-2 hours (depending on how much cardio I do afterwards)...though its rare that my actual strength training lasts more than an hour. The biggest mistake people make is believing more is better, when in all actuality, less is sometimes better. Remember, you get results when you…
  • I can't think of anything that can burn 300 calories in 10 minutes. Just like Addison said, a gimmick product created and marketed to unknowledgeable (and sometimes desperate) people attempting to lose weight. Early on I bought into a few useless products (electronic ab stimulator was the worst!), but nothing ever worked…
  • My baby's gotta have back!
  • I think you'd enjoy Strong: The Movie.
