I use a Garmin 405 and love it! It is very dependable, decent battery life, and very accurate. Downsides, because everything has them, the touch bezel is sensitive to sweat, so be sure to lock the controls. Overall, very satisfied with it. Have had it for almost 2 years.

I currently ride a Giant Defy 3, and have used it for a few triathlons and duathlons. It is a good bike for commuting and for speed riding too, as long as you have no illusions about it being a real Tri bike. Love my Giant! I think one of the things you should do is enter a race! You will surprise yourself on race day with how well you do. The racing community is fantastic, with lots of support all over the place. After that, i would consider working towards an 8K, or if you like the 5K distance, then trying to get it a bit faster at a time.
