Can you link me to something scientific showing this?

Energy burned running on a treadmill (not moving your body any distance) is completely different than that burned running on the road. (remember W = F x D from high school?)
-
Checked out the app. Suddenly no one likes the current version!
-
Thank you. Not seeking to invest in any equipment other than my phone.

Thank you so much for all your replies! What a great community this is! OK, so the consensus/conclusion is that that 600 calorie green-checked entry, which is double the labelling, is simply wrong, if we are to assume that Quaker Oats labelling is correct, which, given the omnipresence of the product, I am going to go…

I was going to discuss running vs walking but I now see it has been exhaustively discussed. But MFP does not let one delete a post. Therefore, here is a haiku instead:Rainy afternoon, Little daughter you will never Teach that cat to dance.

You are very kind to take so much time with me. It seems that I have either 1) an unusually slow metabolism or 2) you're right that I am not tracking food well enough. I had thought I was being rather religious in measuring, looking up restaurant food, etc, etc, but we humans are, I think rather good at deluding ourselves.…
-
I used to think that as well! My daughter demonstrated to me that that is incorrect. Many more muscles (e.g. in the arms, abdomen, back, etc) are used during running, and so it is not surprising that running burns more calories per unit distance than walking.
-
Thanks so much, but I am pretty sure you are incorrect. See the other reply and my reply to that. If you know of an app that can automatically tell what I am doing, could you point me to it?
-
Exactly, it would be nice if I could tell the app "If I am going faster than 3.5 MPH, I am running". The thing is the burn rate per step is more when you are running than when you are walking, and the app, which, as you point out, must be pre-told what you plan to do, can't track run/walking, which is what a lot of us out…

Yes, exactly, I weigh 185, which I entered into the FT4 before using it. I am highly skeptical.
-
I realize it is not meant to be worn all day. Only that when you weigh a bowl of fruit, you subtract the weight of the bowl. I thought that the FT4 might be including my base-line metabolism (the weight of the bowl) in its calculations. I don't think it is possible that I burned 766 calories by run/walking 4 miles.
-
Thank you all for your kind responses. I went out and got a Polar FT4 (off Ebay! $12!). I tried it for the first time last night. I was fascinated by the heart rate and now see easily why I do not run very far before having to walk! The session lasted 55 min, four miles. I ran the first couple of miles then alternatively…

Did you plan on consuming the entire bottle in one sitting? You are picking at nits with this post.

Laughing!!!

My wife buys those slimy things. REAL carrots don't do that. I am going to peel and eat one right now!

Actually laughing aloud!!

Sorry here is the link corrected: http://www.myfitnesspal.com/topics/show/725013-elliptical-trainer-and-calories-burned

I do notice that when I change the weight, the force required changes quite noticeably. But that probably means the cal/hr changes as well. It is interesting because, purely speaking, the machine SHOULD simply measure force over time, which, in mechanical physics, should convert nicely to calories. I got a long letter from…

This is interesting, but not helpful. I don't see a significant difference between 1000 and 920 (80 resting calories per hour for me). I had already been correcting to 800 (80%) before I made this post which no weight-loss. Now I am going to try 60% to see what happens.
-
That's why I multiply by 0.8. But in reading these posts, I have decided to go to 0.6. I think I'll take a pass on the $100 wrist-watch.

OK, I get what you say about gender, but a 6 ft guy who weighs 170 is skinny. A 5 ft guy who weighs 170 has fat and/or muscle to explain his weight. So how does the height thing work metabolically?
-
Do you have a monitor you would suggest?
-
What do gender and height have to do with the amount of work you put into the machine? My machine asks for weight.
-
And you are earnestly frank. I can say this because I am, frankly, earnest.

I think there is a novel in this one!!

I've never done a challenge before; I'd like to join, please.

Here is an interesting exchange I had a few years ago with a physiologist at Cybex: I use a Cybex 750AT [this is a brand of elliptical http://www.amazon.com/CYBEX-750AT-Total-Body-Trainer/dp/B002VL5KME I love this thing!!] at the gym. I am not a super athlete. I get my heart-rate up to ~150 and hold it there for ~45m. At…
