I Just started this week! OUCH

my 8 yr old competes in track and cross country on a national level. He loves the Nike Dual Fusion Run for kids. I don't think they wear any worse than the adult size versions, and they had the right amount of support for him. The Nike Dart has more arch support than the Dual Fusion if you want more support.

My dad lives in LA, and I have lived in Des Moines most of my life. Whenever I visit him, I can't imagine living in California! The driving and sitting in traffic drives me nuts. Des Moines is a very safe, very friendly community. I don't know that I would want to live here and commute to either Iowa City or Ames, but that…

I think as long as you are running easy, you could do it. I had only been running for a year when I ran my first half. I made the mistake of not just running the distance, but trying to "beat my time" in every training run. So I ended up running it injured, and then last year kept injuring myself (yes, I like to learn the…

can you swim? That would probably be your best bet, and elliptical or bike if you are able to.

I hate those gels, I have tried them but they are nasty. They work for a lot of people though. I usually just carry fruit snacks with me on long runs or races. I really like the Mott's fruit snacks from Costo! The only other thing that doesn't make me gag is Power Bar energy blasts, they are fruit snack - like in texture.…

I would say the plyometric workout is not easy on the knees, and some of the leg strength video may be questionable.
-
I am also so annoyed by this!! That's what I run my recovery runs at, so I would use it a lot. I just put in half my time @ 10 min pace and half my time @ 9 min pace.

I am about 75% of the way through it. It is awesome, it's not just the story of the Tarahumara, but a whole history and science behind running and how we evolved to be runners. Well worth it.

Good luck in your race!

Do you have The Stick or Tiger Tail or something similar? Even a rolling pin would work. Once or twice a day, use it to roll out your calf muscles (both in the back and along the front inside/outside of the shin). You can adjust your gait. I used to be a heel striker and a PT told me to simply start landing mid foot. It…

I think it's probably different for everyone. Everything I read says to skip the night before huge pasta dinner, but to make sure you are eating a fair amount of carbs a couple days before, to make sure you have good glycogen stores. I think the water that gets stored with the glycogen might even be an asset? I ran a 15…

I have found that if I am cutting too many calories in an effort to lose weight, I don't have the energy for the harder workouts - speed and interval days. But in general, as long as I stick to a slight deficit, I have been losing weight (slowly). I am not really overweight, just trying to get off the last 5 lbs, so I…

In general, I drink just plain water for runs under an hour. Long runs I will typically drink gatorade after, we keep both the G2 (lower cal) and regular gatorade in the fridge. If it's been a super hot, sweaty, energy depleting run and I know I need the calories I will drink the regular, otherwise I drink G2.

I agree - you need to get fitted the first time. After that you can just keep buying the same brand/style online or at stores when you see them on sale. Some people need shoes designed for specific things - gait or foot structure or whatever. Once you know what type of shoe you need, then Runners World has shoe guides…

I think that sounds like a great plan! If you want a little more tailored plan after your 10k, you can input that race time into Runners World smart coach - free training plan, and it has inputs like a recent race time (your 10k), race distance, race date, current mileage, and then you pick if you want an easy, med, hard,…

Feel free to add me. I am vegetarian, although on occasion I will eat fish - don't love it, but make it for my family and sometimes the Hubs hounds me into eating some :) I do eat eggs and some dairy (yogurt and cheese).

I am also 5'4 and was around 105 in college (high school under 100, but was really thin). I know I felt my best between 105 - 110. I went from 125 - 120 last year and have been hovering between 120 - 122 most of this year, when all of a sudden I dipped below 120 and have been between 119 - 120 the last month or so. The…

I think you should go for it! Just start with the goal of finishing, and be smart about your training. My first half I was so excited that I overtrained and injured myself right before the race. The Galloway run/walkk method is probably the most conservative program and would likely insure you are slowly building up your…

I used to have this problem a lot and I think for me it was a blood sugar issue - if I would eat something seemingly healthy as a big bowl of fruit salad with a little cottage cheese - within an hour I was nearly passed out. What has helped is eating frequent meals throughout the day. I make sure to include protein in…

I think if the bag says 350 cals for half a cup, that would be dry. So if you soak and they expand to 1+ cup, you eat them all, you've eaten 350 cals.

how are you doing on calories? if you are not over on calories in your log, is it possible that you are overestimating the calories burned when you run?
-
i do the same thing when I am running intervals.

But given how hot it gets here in the summer and lack of water fountains, I started using…

Yes - it is legal. Either you will be hired as an independent contractor, in which case all your out of pocket expenses that go into your business (personal training) will be netted against your income, or if you are a regular employee there is a place on your taxes to deduct unreimbursed expenses required for your job,…

Congrats! It's definitely addicting. I ran my first half injured. Then tore my calf a month before the next one I had signed up for. Tentatively planning on running one in October - and keeping my fingers crossed I don't injure myself in the mean time.
-
Congrats on signing up for your first half!! I struggle with losing weight when I ramp up my training as well. If I am eating at a deficit to lose weight, I can tell I don't have quite as much energy for a great workout. I think it is possible if you plan your meals well. Like, the day before a long run I won't have much…

I think the HRM sounds about right. MFP overestimates for me on some things and underestimates on others. The problem is MFP can't judge your intensity. For example, I have been running for a couple years now, so running at a pace of 9 or 10 min miles is pretty easy for me. MFP tends to overestimate my burn doing that. But…
