  • There's an expression... it takes you 4 weeks for you to see a change, 8 weeks for your friends to see a change, and 12 weeks for the world to see a change. I think that holds pretty true.
  • There's a school of thought out there that running increases thigh muscle strength, which in turn will alleviate some knee pain. Not sure if this applies to arthritis, but I think you should talk to a doctor who knows something about running.
  • There's a ton of good stuff in just the whites. And there's a ton of cholesterol in the yolk, which is why I do what you do - I eat three egg whites but only one yolk.
  • My work people know and my girlfriends, but my family doesn't. My family members have weight issues, and they think since I'm the skinny one (I've never been clinically "overweight") I shouldn't worry about my weight. I don't necessarily hide it from them, I just don't want to talk about it with them and avoid them trying…
  • Dear Partner, Darling Partner, Domestic Partner. Depending on the site you're on, it means one of those!
  • There is a piece of cheesecake waiting for me after I run a half-marathon next Sunday :) I've been craving it for weeks!
  • Doctor and rest! You don't need to do anything in the last week before your race; you're only doing it to stay loose and because you likely have nervous energy and feel you need to. You will complete the marathon even if you rest all week (assuming your doctor gives you clearance to run).
  • Thank you, thank you, thank you. As I posted earlier, I agree with the death penalty in theory. Too many people - especially a majority of the people in this thread - have no idea what they're talking about. This is what happens when people are no longer taking classes in civics. No one knows about how the government…
  • In theory, I support the death penalty. But in my opinion, it is not delivered in a just way in the US. I think race and the differences in culture have historically played too much of a role in determining those who are given the death penalty and those who are sentenced to life imprisonment (whether this is conscious or…
  • If you get some resistance bands, a few free weights, and a stability ball, there are a million different strength training exercises you can do!
  • I love chocolate milk, yogurt, and a banana within 30-60 mins after a long run.
  • Sweet and salty, together and separate! Specifically, I love cheeseburgers, ice cream, chips, and juice (which the sugar really adds up!!!). And if I don't have some fried chicken and mashed potatoes soon....
  • I love my pear shape! Although it's a pain to have to get all of my dresses fitted because I'm a size smaller on top. It's not fair though that when I lose weight, my already small chest gets smaller and my butt/thighs seem to stay the same :(
  • Therapy helped for me, too, during a very tough period in my life. I truly believe that medication only works to its fullest potential when it's coupled with therapy.
  • I took Paxil for several years as treatment for Generalized Anxiety Disorder. This was while I was in college and a competitive athlete (I was running cross country, indoor track, and outdoor track). Despite my high activity level, I still gained about 20 lbs. I lost some of the weight through watching my diet more…
  • Antidepressants change your appetite and your metabolism. Thank you for your incredible insensitivity.
  • Speaking from my personal experience... if you've run several half-mar, you can certainly run a marathon. But even though the race distance is twice that of a half-mar, I found that the work and effort and stress on the body was much more than twice that of a half-mar. I won't be doing a marathon again!
  • May 6 - half marathon. I would live to run sub-2 hours. Not sure if I can, but we'll see!
  • As for the mileage, you can burn about 100 to 125 calories a mile so that seems right to me!
  • I feel you! I was like this a few weeks back, and I found that I have to have a snack about 1hr before I work out. Otherwise I will have no energy to work out. Sooo, I have been taking in about 100-200 calories as my pre-workout snack and it really gets me going. Sometimes I also drink a cup of tea for a little bit of…
  • Check out Shoe Dog from roadrunnersports.com (I love this site!). You answer a couple of questions about yourself and it will suggest shoes. You might need the help of another person to figure out if you're a pronator or not. Also, check out runnersworld.com - they have tons of articles on shoes etc.
  • When I'm having a craving, I will (1) chew gum - sometimes the flavor satisfies me, (2) drink a diet soda - again, the flavor and sensation of drinking may satisfy me, or (3) have a 100-calorie snack.
  • Mine was a few different things. I am a former high school & college runner and also did racing as an adult. During my 3 years of law school I led a pretty sedentary life and didn't eat so well. Lots of other personal things have happened in the past year, and all the stress took a toll on my exercise and eating habits. I…
  • So glad you are no longer with that that loser!
  • 5'1", 130 lbs BMR = @1350 TDEE = @1850+ (depending on exercise)
  • I BQ-ed in 2006 (although I didn't run it - one marathon was enough for me!) with a 3:32 at NYC. I did a lower-mileage training plan but it was intense. I did a lot of Yasso 800s (look 'em up on Runner's World), tempo runs, and all of my long runs were under a 9 min/mi pace. I also did weight training on easy run days.
  • I like to run for 5-10 mins, then stretch for 5-10 minutes. Then I do a work out, and then I'll stretch for at least 10 minutes after.
  • You can do resistance cardio and build muscle. For example I was a competitive runner for years and during the racing season wouldn't lift weights because we would do sprints, hills, stairs, and other types of speed work which does help tone. Not everyone needs to look like they have muscle to look good - sometimes the…
