  • Check out kettlebell routines. Jillian Michael shred it with weights, and lots of YouTube videos. Kettlebells are very versatile. All you need is a couple of kettlebells and you are all set. I have 2-5 lb kbs, and 1-15lb kb. I would recommend a 10 lb and 5 lb to start. Good luck!
  • Highly processed foods generally take a long time to go bad. I used to buy a white potato bread that could stay on the counter for weeks without a sign of mold. Waay too many preservatives!
  • I have pictures on my frig from Athleta! I bought 2 bathing suits from their sale section and I am currently awaiting the arrival of 2 dresses! LOVE Athleta!

  • OMG! Hysterical! I wore husky sears toughskins. Childhood is painful sometimes!
  • As you will read on the boards, you cannot lose fat from specific areas by working those areas. Your body decides where the fat will come off first. Of course when the fat does come off, those areas that you have worked will look awesome. Plenty of cardio and HIIT will burn the fat. The elliptical trainer is very gentle on…
  • Protein shakes, nuts, lean meat, eggs, yogurt, cottage cheese, hummus, skim milk
  • Love them too! So versatile. One 15 lb kb is all I need for a great workout. Agree with above poster. Shred it with weights is a good intro to kettlebells.
  • Whatever you do, don't make your goal to prove your mom wrong! You have to do this for YOU! Otherwise this will not work. Make your goal a healthy fit you. I think it's great to learn how to take care of your body early in life. I wish I had known. Best of luck to you.
  • It is hard to log when you are always eating out. I would just do the best you can. Try to be strict about portion size. Eat salads. Also, if you are staying in a hotel, find a grocery and buy healthy snacks for your room. Don't fall prey to vending machines, room service, or little refrigerators stocked with booze and…

  • Goose bumps! I remember the day that I went to size 8, also Old Navy. Such a great feeling. Happy for you!

  • I love this! I think you just inspired me to pick up the needles after a long knitting hiatus. It looks great and so do your arms in your profile pic.
  • Sounds like micromanagement to me, but everyone is different:)
  • Don't think of it in terms of heart rate. During your workout...whatever it is, you should have intervals of a half a minute or minute where you are pushing so hard that you could not sustain that intensity for any longer. Yes, your Hr goes up for that interval, (my max is 170), but then returns to 140s-150s when the…
  • Just made her shrimp and avocado salad with tomatillo dressing. So good!
  • This one drives me crazy! How did you become overweight in the first place!?
  • It depends on where you ride. Around where I live in MA, it's a good workout with lots of hills. I was in Florida a couple of weeks ago and went for a ride (totally flat) barely broke a sweat. The stationary bike is great because you can create hills for yourself. Nothin beats being outside though.
  • Ahh yes! Our patients always come first. We need to make ourselves the priority in this assignment! It sure is tough sometimes. I especially struggle on the night shift. Tons of junk food in the break room, and feeling like hell at 4am is a recipe for disaster. There is hope! Make small changes to start and before you know…
  • Wow! Spot on for me! Went past my goal of 145 and got to 140. That is when my body said Yer done, and I said ok, I'm happy here. The calculator said 139. That's pretty good!
  • I think the answer is in your quote. I recently came to the realization that the key to my success this time was forgiving myself after screw ups. Once I dumped the shame and beating myself up, things started to change. The forgiveness gave me the freedom to start new every time I messed up. That's not to say it didn't…
  • Muscle milk with a banana and cup of ice in blender. Delicious!
  • Yes! The same thing happened to me! For the life of me, I couldn't figure out how it was displaying my HR until I noticed the "polar ready" sign. Nice little benefit to the polar brand. On a sadder note, the elliptical read a higher cal burn than the hrm. Oh well. I guess it just makes me work harder:)
  • Damn! That's one badass case of poison ivy! 18 lbs is a lot of weight in one week. You may want to check with your doc about this.
  • Great NSV! Be careful of your wedding ring if you have one:)

  • If I have a busy day like that, I usually do a short excercise video or maybe even yoga.
  • No way to be completely sure which one is right. My FT4 always measures less cals than the gym equipment or mfp. Go with the lowest value and call it a day.
  • Yes, my polar FT4 says I burn less cals than the machines at the gym. Personally, on a slow day at the gym, I burn about 400 cals. On a really motivated day, I shoot for 800. Have fun with your hrm:)
  • Do you enter your age and weight on the program on the machine? That may make it more accurate. I go pretty hard on the elliptical, and According to the machine I use, I burn roughly 600 cals/hr and travel 6 miles. The first machine you mentioned sounds like an overestimate to me. Having said all that, my HRM says I burn…
  • I have always felt that the elliptical is a kinder, more gentle machine. Low impact and no pounding on the feet or joints. It's interesting to hear that it is painful for some. I do not hold on to the side rails or arm pumps. I balance myself on the foot platforms and crank away with my ipod. If you can try not to lean or…
  • What exactly hurts? Some folks complain of numb toes which can be a shoe issue. It may just be that you are not used to it. I can go forever on the elliptical, but the treadmill is not my friend:)
  • When I started mfp, I focused only on staying under for cals, and over time, my eating has become much cleaner, and has shifted to more protein. I wouldn't worry about it too much. It begins with small steps and before you know it, you will see big changes.
