Wow! Amazing job! Thanks for sharing your story. Don't know that I'll ever run in a 5K, maybe I will try one in the "walk" portion until I get bionic knees. Great example for your little guy & great journey to improved health. Congrats!

Are you lifting weights also as part of your exercise regime? If not, I'll tell you that it has helped me a lot. I just began in mid March & had to do some "rehab" type exercises before I was able to even do squats, shoulder exercises, etc. I've lost 9.5" (I need much more) & in the process, I have much more muscle…

mmread - have you ever done a very long road trip across the Midwest? We do every spring & there are many, many towns where we have to stop & gas up, eat, etc & there are NO restaurants or grocery stores, only option maybe 1 fast food place in very rural areas. We tend to pack food in our coolers anyway on long trips.…

And, apparently, lots of not-so-healthy stuff goes on especially toward the end....when they dehydrate themselves to lose 10+ lbs in a day or so (to win the competition) by sitting in the sauna & fasting to the extreme. It IS a TV reality show as others have mentioned. Slow weight loss is not nearly as exciting but is much…

I'm 56 & maybe that's why I don't care what anyone thinks at the gym? I did start working out with a Trainer 3 mos. ago as I had absolutely no weight training experience & no idea how to start. I love it & wish I could afford more sessions. I have learned a lot and have been able to do things I never thought I'd be able to…

My understanding is you need to eat at least your "BMR" calories. So if your BMR is, for example 1400 calories (figure it out under the TOOLS tab), then you want your "net" calories to be 1400. Go to the "Eat More to Weigh Less" GROUP here on MFP for wonderful ideas, lots of links & healthy tips.

Wow, an amazing transformation! A whole new you. Congrats and thanks for sharing & inspiring the rest of us. Keep doing whatever you're doing. You look great.

Welcome to MFP. You will find a lot of very supportive people on here, lots of good ideas, recipes, etc. There are "groups" on MFP (look at the tabs above) & the one that I feel is very useful esp. for women is called "Eat More to Weigh Less." It's a very active discussion group, lots of support, & links to other Internet…

HI, Not sure but I think the terms are interchangeable? RD, or Registered Dieticians, are have at least an undergraduate degree & many have graduate degrees. Many health insurers will pay for visits with RDs. I'm not sure but you may need an MD referral, depending on your health insurance or the regs in your state. The…

I just started drinking protein shakes last week, altho' I use them as supplements because I wasn't getting enough protein in each day. (I think a lot of women struggle with that). I tried the Whey Protein Elite Series (Triple Chocolate) that I found at WalMart, on the recommendation from a friend. I mix it in a blender,…

Good to be planning ahead. We all have to do the same thing when we have parties, winery trips and such. I hosted 3 prties at my house last wk end & still had choices to make! I made sure there were healthy snack options. For instance, I loaded up on salad & veges, had the burger w/o bun, had fruit etc. J ust tried to…

Thank you for sharing your story along the way. I first saw your posts/ blog this March or April when I joined MFP. I always log on & check to see what you have posted. Such inspiration for all of us. Thank you! You look so strong, healthy & fit. Love that you did this all with such healthy eating & exercise....and…

Have you looked at the "Eat More to Weigh Less" group here on MFP? A very active group, always have a lot of suggestions, for increasing (healthy) calories. There are a lot of links there also so you can calculate your BMR & how many calories/day you should be eating. I find that "group" to be really helpful.

Congrats on your successful journey....better health, better life. Thank you for inspiring the rest of us. Best wishes.

Laughed when I first say the post - I had a cottage cheese questions also :-) Love all of the recipe suggestions. @Shannon, I just discovered how much sodium is in most cottage cheese here in the US. I was eating every day for the protein, I ususally get Prairie Farms but picked up some Daisy brand this week because it has…

Well I have to tell somebody. I've lost 2 entire pounds this week! Woohoo!!!!! I'd lost 15# quickly (6-8 wks) , then to a screeching halt....for more than a month. Disheartening. I found this group & on the advice of you all (+RD & Trainer), I grudgingly increased my calories(from 1200 pre-exercise) by about 300-400/day to…

There will be many more experience people who reply, I"m sure. From what I've been told by Physical Therapist & Kineseologist friends, the difference lies in "independence" when exercising muscles. Here's my basic explanation, hope it makes sense. When you use a machine for your arms, for example, you use the same weight &…

Wow, amazing transformation! Congrats. Can't wait until I can post the same weight loss number. It's quite a process, isn't it?

Hi, there's a "group" already on MFP "40-50+ but younger next year" If you want to join that group, Go to "Community" tab, then search for it on the "Groups" tab (adjacent to "message boards" tab). It;s great. Very active group, lots of support. Kim
